Book excerpt: Nonlinear optics and ferroelectrics have been recognized for several decades as promising fields with important applications in the area of opto-electronics, photonics, memory devices, etc. High performance electro-optical switching elements for telecommunications and optical information processing are based on the material properties. Hence, there is always a continuous search for new and better materials. In this thesis we have investigated the growth and physical properties of four crystals viz. two NLO and two ferroelectric crystals. This thesis consists of eight chapters. The first chapter gives an overview of historical perspectives of nonlinear optical phenomenon, ferroelectricity and materials developed therein. The second chapter gives a brief description of the underlying theories of crystal growth, nonlinear optics and ferroelectricity. A major portion of this chapter consists of gist of the earlier work carried out on compounds of our interest viz. urea L-malic acid, sodium p-nitrophenolate dihydrate, glycine phosphite and lithium niobate. Synthesis, growth, crystal structure details and some physical properties of these materials are briefed. The third chapter describes the experimental techniques needed to grow as well as characterize these crystals. The experiments are performed on single crystals grown in the laboratory using the solution growth setup and Czochralski crystal puller. These growth units are described in detail. Preliminary characterization techniques like powder Xray diffraction, optical transmission, scanning electron microscopy, Vickers and Knoop hardness are described briefly. Various experimental methods viz. dielectric, polarization reversal, photoacoustic spectroscopy and laser induced damage for characterizing the grown crystals are explained. Urea L-malic acid (ULMA) is a new NLO organic material which is reported to exhibit second harmonic efficiency three times that of the widely used inorganic crystal, KDP. Hence, this mater.

Over the past few decades, the advancement in science and technology has made single crystals indispensable for the development of new generation devices. Nearly-perfect crystals of nonlinear optics and ferroelectric materials are needed for optoelectronics, microprocessors, photonics, memories and crystals of all kinds which are required for scientific studies and new applications. Hence, there is always a continuous search for new and efficient materials. In this research we have investigated the growth and physical properties of four crystals viz. two NLO and two ferroelectric crystals. Single crystals of a new NLO material DGT and GZS are grown by slow cooling technique for the first time. GPI, TUGPI and AGPI single crystals grown in the solution growth technique have been discussed. Tri Glycine Barium Nitrate (TGBN) is studied recently in terms of its NLO and ferroelectric properties. The grown crystals were subjected to structural, optical, thermal and mechanical characterization studies. The general conclusions are given along with possible future work that could be performed on these crystals.

Book excerpt: During our Phase I research, we advanced materials synthesis and evaluation techniques needed to develop ferroelectric liquid crystals into a useful second-order nonlinear optical material. We developed a technique for determining the second-order nonlinear susceptibility by measuring the electro- optic coefficient r22 at 633 nm, using modulation frequencies between 100 KHz- 100 MHz. We evaluated two specially synthesized FLCs by measuring their r22 coefficients: previously existing MX-5679 and recently synthesized W-399, both based on a nitrobenzene hyperpolarizable moiety. Results show an increasing r22 with increasing spontaneous polarization. We also partially evaluated a new FLC material, W-371, with an ortho-situated nitroaniline hyperpolarizable moiety. Since the liquid crystalline and the linear and nonlinear materials parameters FLCs have a temperature dependence, we examined existing FLC polymers for a FLC to glass phase and discovered a polymeric/FLC system that potentially could be used to reduce temperature dependent materials properties. Our FLC synthesis efforts concentrated on synthesis of Hoffman-LaRoche compounds roche 1 and roche 2. Unfortunately, we were unable to duplicate their synthesis and instead developed an alternative core that could yield FLCs with a higher second-order nonlinear susceptibility. Ferroelectric liquid crystal, Second-order nonlinear optical material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on ferroelectricity and ferroelectric materials started in 1920 with the discovery by Valasek that the variation of spontaneous polarization in Rochelle salt with sign and magnitude of an applied electric field traced a complete and reproducible hysteresis loop. Activity in the field was sporadic until 1935, when Busch and co-workers announced the observation of similar behavior in potassium dihydrogen phosphate and related compounds. Progress thereafter continued at a modest level with the undertaking of some theoretical as well as further experimental studies. In 1944, von Hippel and co-workers discovered ferroelectricity in barium titanate. The technological importance of ceramic barium titanate and other perovskites led to an upsurge of interest, with many new ferroelectrics being identified in the following decade. By 1967, about 2000 papers on various aspects of ferroelectricity had been published. The bulk of this widely dispersed literature was concerned with the experimental measurement of dielectric, crystallographic, thermal, electromechanical, elastic, optical, and magnetic properties. A critical and excellently organized cpmpilation based on these data appeared in 1969 with the publica tion of Landolt-Bornstein, Volume 111/3. This superb tabulation gave instant access to the results in the literature on nearly 450 pure substances and solid solutions of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials. Continuing interest in ferroelectrics, spurred by the growing importance of electrooptic crystals, resulted in the publication of almost as many additional papers by the end of 1969 as had been surveyed in Landolt-Bornstein.

Book excerpt: This volume is a joint effort of the Research Materials Information Center (RMIC) of the Solid State Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Libraries and Information Systems Center at Bell Telephone Laboratories (BTL) Murray Hill, N. J. The Research Materials Information Center has, since 1963, been answering inquiries on the avail ability, preparation, and properties of inorganic solid-state research materials. The preparation of bibliographies has been essential to this function, and the interest in ferroelectrics led to the compila tion of the journal and report literature on that subject. The 1962 book Ferroelectric Crystals, by Jona and Shirane, was taken as a cutoff point, and all papers through mid-1969 received by the Center have been included. The Libraries and Information Systems Center of BTL has, over a period of years, developed a proprie tary package of computer programs called BELDEX, which formats and generates indexes to biblio graphic material. This group therefore undertook to process RMIC's ferroelectric references by BELDEX so that both laboratories could have the benefit of an indexed basic bibliography in this important research area.

Due to their very large length-to-diameter ratio together with perfect crystallographic structure and chemical homogeneity, such fibers have mechanical and physical properties that approach the theoretical values. Fukuda explains how their ultra-high strength enables their application as reinforcing agents in structural components. And he elucidates how and why fiber crystals are particularly well suited for wave guiding, tunable narrow-band filters and nonlinear optics and for the generation of green, blue and violet wavelenghts, and also as micro lasers and laser modulators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Optics on Ferroic Materials Covering the fruitful combination of nonlinear optics and ferroic materials! The use of nonlinear optics for the study of ferroics, that is, magnetically, electrically or otherwise spontaneously ordered and switchable materials has witnessed a remarkable development since its inception with the invention of the laser in the 1960s. This book on Nonlinear Optics on Ferroic Materials reviews and advances an overarching concept of ferroic order and its exploration by nonlinear-optical methods. In doing so, it brings together three fields of physics: symmetry, ferroic order, and nonlinear laser spectroscopy. It begins by introducing the fundamentals for each of these fields. The book then discusses how nonlinear optical studies help to reveal properties of ferroic materials that are often inaccessible with other methods. In this, consequent use is made of the unique degrees of freedom inherent to optical experiments. An excursion into the theoretical foundations of nonlinear optical processes in ferroics rounds off the discussion. The final part of the book explores classes of ferroic materials of primary interest. In particular, this covers multiferroics with magnetoelectric correlations and oxide-electronic heterostructures. An outlook towards materials exhibiting novel forms of ferroic states or correlated arrangements beyond ferroic order and the study these systems by nonlinear optics concludes the work. The book is aimed equally at experienced scientists and young researchers at the interface between condensed-matter physics and optics and with a taste for bold, innovative ideas.

Book excerpt: Laser radiation is used in many ways; to stimulate thermonuclear reactions, to cut glass, to grow crystals & to obtain three dimensional images possessing electro-optic & optical nonlinear properties are used. The crystals widely used at present are of high optical quality & find wide applications but they possess comparatively low electro-optic & nonlinear coefficients. In recent years ferroelectric single crystals of niobates & tantalates of alkali-earth methods have been synthesised & studied in details. These appear to possess high electro-optic, piezoelectric, pyroelectric & nonlinear properties making these crystals ideal for use in device modulation declination & conversion of laser radiation frequency Because of the wide applications of these crystals it is important to fully understand the growth technology. This book presents the basic physical & chemical properties of single crystals of these compounds, gives a brief description of the growth techniques & the various aspects of their application in quantum electronics & nonlinear optics.
