Book excerpt: China’s influence in Africa, and its economic relationship with states throughout the African continent, has been analyzed and criticized by many scholars. However, the role migration plays in the relationship between China and Africa remains a relatively unexamined topic in comparison to economic relationships. Furthermore, while several scholars have studied the relationship between African locals and Chinese migrants from the African perspective, the Chinese immigrant’s perspective of Africans has not been discussed at length. This project seeks to better understand how Chinese immigrants who migrate to South Africa and Mozambique perceive black Africans. It is grounded on 29 interviews conducted in Durban, South Africa and Maputo, Mozambique with Chinese immigrants. Interviewees included hospitality workers, construction workers and supervisors, and local shop owners. The interviews gave light to the various levels of prejudicial and negative attitudes Chinese immigrants possess about local black Africans, and the role Confucian thought plays in developing those viewpoints. Furthermore, this project delves deeper into discovering the construct of race from a Chinese lens and how that view impacts China’s growing relationship with African states.

This book focuses on analyzing this new Diaspora and is the first book-length study of the process of Africans travelling to China and forming communities there. Based on innovative intermingling of qualitative and quantitative research methods involving prolonged interaction with approximately 800 Africans across six main Chinese cities--Guangzhou, Yiwu, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and Macau--sociolinguistic and sociocultural profiles are constructed to depict the everyday life of Africans in China. The study provides insights into understanding issues such as why Africans go to China, what they do there, how they communicate with their Chinese hosts, what opportunities and problems they encounter in their China sojourn, and how they are received by the Chinese state. Beyond these methodological and empirical contributions, the book also makes a theoretical contribution by proposing a crosscultural bridge theory of migrant-indigene relations, arguing that Africans in China act as sociopolitical, socioeconomic, and sociocultural bridges linking Africa to China. Made in Hong Kong delivers a new narrative of this metamorphosis, revealing Hong Kong both as a critical engine in the expansion and remaking of postwar global capitalism and as the linchpin of Sino-U.S. trade since the 1970s. Peter E. Hamilton explores the role of an overlooked transnational Chinese elite who fled to Hong Kong amid war and revolution. Despite losing material possessions, these industrialists, bankers, academics, and other professionals retained crucial connections to the United States. They used these relationships to enmesh themselves and Hong Kong with the U.S. through commercial ties and higher education. By the 1960s, Hong Kong had become a manufacturing powerhouse supplying American consumers, and by the 1970s it was the world’s largest sender of foreign students to American colleges and universities. Hong Kong’s reorientation toward U.S. international leadership enabled its transplanted Chinese elites to benefit from expanding American influence in Asia and positioned them to act as shepherds to China’s reengagement with global capitalism. After China’s reforms accelerated under Deng Xiaoping, Hong Kong became a crucial node for China’s export-driven development, connecting Chinese labor with the U.S. market. Analyzing untapped archival sources from around the world, this book demonstrates why we cannot understand postwar globalization, China’s economic rise, or today’s Sino-U.S. trade relationship without centering Hong Kong.
