Book excerpt: The effects of water stress timing and duration on growth, dry matter accumulation and partitioning, reproductive development and yield components of dry beans (cv. Red Kidney) was studdied in the field at Davis, California. The plants water relations were monitored by measuring leaf water potential and leaf resistance to water vapor diffusion. Soil water content was measured frequently. The following differntail treatment were given in 1976 following uniforms preirrigation, Wet - Irrigation every week to ten days. Symptoms - Irrigation when the plants showed water stress symptoms (dark green foliage). Pod - Irrigation every week to ten days starting in early pod stage. Dry - No irrigation. In 1977, the wet, Pod and Dry treatments were repeated, while the flowering treatment (irrigation every week to ten days starting at blooming) replaced the Symptom treatment. Diurnal variation in leaf water potential followed the usual pattern in the field with -12 to -15 bars minimum in the mid-afternoon. Leaf water potentials in irrigated and unirrigated plants did not differ significantly. Solute potential measurements suggested diurnal osmotic adjustment. Leaf diffusive resistances were not signicicantly different among treatments, Leaf resitance increased with plant age. The average daytime leaf resitance was 4 to 6 sec/cm at day 48 after planting and 6 to 12 sec/cm at day 80. Leaf area index (LAI) was drastically reduced by water stress. In 1977 the Dry treatment reached maximum LAI (1.6) at day 62 after (...).

Book excerpt: The first premise of this book is that farmers need access to options for improving their situation. In agricultural terms, these options might be manage ment alternatives or different crops to grow, that can stabilize or increase household income, that reduce soil degradation and dependence on off-farm inputs, or that exploit local market opportunities. Farmers need a facilitating environment, in which affordable credit is available if needed, in which policies are conducive to judicious management of natural resources, and in which costs and prices of production are stable. Another key ingredient of this facilitating environment is information: an understanding of which options are viable, how these operate at the farm level, and what their impact may be on the things that farmers perceive as being important. The second premise is that systems analysis and simulation have an impor tant role to play in fostering this understanding of options, traditional field experimentation being time-consuming and costly. This book summarizes the activities of the International Benchmark Sites Network for Agrotechnology Transfer (IBSNAT) project, an international initiative funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). IBSNAT was an attempt to demonstrate the effectiveness of understanding options through systems analysis and simulation for the ultimate benefit of farm households in the tropics and subtropics. The idea for the book was first suggested at one of the last IBSNAT group meetings held at the University of Hawaii in 1993.

Book excerpt: Chemical Manipulation of Crop Growth and Development presents a critical review of the plant growth regulators in field crops. It discusses the strategies to discover plant growth regulators for agronomic crops; the methods of modifying stomatal movement; and the possible use of chemicals for photorespiration control. Some of the topics covered in the book are the hormonal control of photosynthesis and assimilate distribution; manipulation of crop growth by ethylene and some implications of the mode of generation; genetic and chemical manipulation of crops to confer tolerance to chemicals; and effects of allelochemicals on crop growth and development. The control of development of potato plant by using endogenous and exogenous growth regulators is covered. The analysis of crop physiology to assess plant growth regulation in sugar beet is also discussed. An in-depth analysis of the influence of auxin antagonists on pod and seed number is provided. The effect of foliar applications of synthetic plant growth regulators on the agronomic characteristics of field-growth corn is presented. A chapter is devoted to the use and effect of cerone in developing winter barley. The book can provide useful information to farmers, botanists, students, and researchers.
