Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Advances in Liquid-liquid Extraction focuses on the applications of liquid extraction. The selection first discusses solvent extraction. Concerns include organic and inorganic separations, mass transfer process, solvent extraction economics, and coalescence in liquid-liquid systems. The book focuses on the chemistry of solvent extraction. Extraction by acidic organophosphorus compounds; extraction by phosphorus-bonded oxygen-donor solvents; extraction by high-molecular weight amines; and synergistic extraction are elaborated. The book also focuses on industrial organic processes; industrial contacting equipment; response characteristics and control of extraction processes; and calculation of contactors with longitudinal mixing. The selection presents the study of longitudinal mixing in liquid-liquid contactors. Rotating disc contactors, packed columns, vibrating plate extractors, and Oldshue-Rushton columns are described. The text also discusses heat transfer by direct liquid-liquid contact and the coalescence of liquid droplets and liquid dispersion. The selection is a vital source of data for readers interested in liquid extraction.

Book excerpt: The growing concern for human wellbeing has generated an increase in the demand for polyphenols, secondary plant metabolites that exhibit different bioactive properties. This increasing demand is mainly due to the current applications in the food industry where polyphenols are considered essential for human health and nutrition. Advances in Technologies for Producing Food-relevant Polyphenols provides researchers, scientists, engineers, and professionals involved in the food industry with the latest methodologies and equipment useful to extract, isolate, purify, and analyze polyphenols from different available sources, such as herbs, flora, vegetables, fruits, and agro-industrial wastes. Technologies currently used to add polyphenols to diverse food matrices are also included. This book serves a reference to design and scale-up processes to obtain polyphenols from different plant sources and to produce polyphenol-rich foods with bioactive properties (e.g. antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, anticancer properties) of interest for human health and wellbeing.

Thornton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents an up-to-date account of some of the fundamental aspects of liquid-liquid extraction technology together with an account of extraction processes in a number of important industries. The work is divided into two parts. Volume 1 is concerned with the thermodynamics of phase equilibria; mass transfer in liquid-liquid systems, including the complicating role of interfacial turbulence; behavior of liquid-liquid dispersions; and the selection and design of countercurrent contactors for particular applications. Volume 2 gives an account of the process chemistry and associated extraction operations in a number of industries of current interest. New extraction techniques have been developed in recent years for specific applications and these are illustrated with reference to the hydrometallurgical, nuclear, pharmaceutical and food industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solvent Extraction in Biotechnology deals with the reco- very and purification of primary and secondary metabolites by solvent extraction. In the first part the reaction engineering principles: definitions, thermodynamic fundamentals, and system models, the kinetics of mass transfer between two phases without and with chemical reaction as well as extraction equipment, which are important for downstream processing in biotechnology, are considered in detail. The special part of the book describes the recovery of low-molecular metabolites: alcohols, acids and antibiotics with organic solvents, carrier-modifier-solvent systems, supercritical gases as well as with liquid membrane techniques. Several practical examples are given for the recovery of different metabolites as well as for the calculation of the extraction processes necessary for equipment design. Besides solvent extraction, novel separation techniques with liquid membrane, microemulsion and reversed micelles are also presented. This book will introduce the biochemical engineer and process engineer to the recovery of products from complex cultivation broths by modern techniques of solvent extraction and help them with process design.

Book excerpt: Solvent extraction is employed very widely in both fundamental research and technology because of the remarkable features of this simple but very effective technique for the separation of different materials. The International Solvent Extraction Conference 1990 was a forum for the presentation of papers on up-to-date research in this field. The collection of the papers in these volumes will be invaluable because information on solvent extraction is often scattered in various journals and proceedings which make the following of developments difficult.

Book excerpt: Presently, general-purpose optimization techniques such as Simulated Annealing, and Genetic Algorithms, have become standard optimization techniques. Concerted research efforts have been made recently in order to invent novel optimization techniques for solving real life problems, which have the attributes of memory update and population-based search solutions. The book describes a variety of these novel optimization techniques which in most cases outperform the standard optimization techniques in many application areas. New Optimization Techniques in Engineering reports applications and results of the novel optimization techniques considering a multitude of practical problems in the different engineering disciplines – presenting both the background of the subject area and the techniques for solving the problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This booklet is designed to bridge the gap between handbooks and technical literature and aims at graduate students or experienced readers. Commercial flow sheeting simulation software is increasingly available and is used in the early steps of process design in industry. As to this, more sophisticated and precise models based on activities instead of concentrations should be used. After an introductory chapter there is in Chapter 2 an intensive discussion of reactive phase equilibria of ionic and non-ionic solutes based on chemical potentials. Chapter 3 introduces to multicomponent diffusion and mass transfer. However, the main focus is on the reactive mass transfer on rigid and mobile surfaces where the interfacial reaction, molecular diffusion and adsorption layers are decisive. The respective extraction of zinc with a cation exchanger and of acetic acid with an anion exchanger is discussed as case studies. Since adsorption layers and surfactants have a major impact on liquid-liquid extraction efficiency, the final chapter reviews several tech niques which make use of polymeric species in an extractive process. A short review is also given on extraction apparatus and the hydrodynamics (hydraulic design, droplet populance balances) of columns. Much of the booklet is based on the PhD works of C. Czapla (2000), G. Modes (2000), H. Klocker (1996), T. Kronberger (1995), M. Marters (2000), M. Roos (2000), M. Traving (2000) and B. Wachter (1996) who I wish to thank for their fruitful contributions.
