Book excerpt: Studies of magnetism at reduced scales have revealed new phenomena that are distinctly different from their bulk counterparts providing insight to the fundamental mechanisms that govern magnetism and other correlated properties. To this end, the use of heteroepitaxy and heterostructures is invaluable for investigating magnetism at reduced dimensions and at surfaces and interfaces. This dissertation is a compilation of investigations examining the magnetic properties of spinel-structure oxide thin films and heterostructures. Of particular interest are non-collinear spin systems as closely competing exchange interactions between magnetic moments give rise to a plethora of ground state degeneracies and phenomena inaccessible in the bulk. The first part of this dissertation highlights the use of heteroepitaxial lattice distortions as a method to tune spin functionality and potentially lift ground state degeneracies more broadly in frustrated magnets. It discusses the first synthesis of heteroepitaxial thin films of the frustrated canted-moment ferrimagnet, CuCr2O4, and demonstrates the modification of exchange interaction strengths which results in greater collinear spin ordering and enhanced magnetization compared to the bulk. The data illustrates the sensitivity of the strong competing exchange interactions suggesting that strain is a promising instrument for perturbing the delicate balance of the exchange interactions in frustrated materials. The second part of this dissertation probes magnetic proximity effects induced by interfaces and unconventional transport properties when CuCr2O4 is incorporated as a barrier layer in magnetic tunnel junctions comprised of ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 and Fe3O4 electrodes. It is surprising that a heterostructure composed entirely of magnetic materials can achieve distinct magnetic and resistive switching given the complexities present at the two barrier-electrode interfaces. Studies of the CuCr2O4/Fe3O4 interface again illustrate the delicate balance between exchange interactions as proximity effects by Fe3O4 are believed to modulate alignment in the Cr moments. Additionally, the bias dependence of JMR displays a local minimum at zero bias which is believed to be the result of the Fe3O4 band structure and spin filtering properties of the CuCr2O4 barrier.

Book excerpt: Our understanding and control of epitaxial oxide heterostructures has progressed along multiple frontiers including magnetic, dielectric, ferroelectric, and superconducting oxide materials. This has resulted in both independent rediscovery and the successful borrowing of ideas from ceramic science, solid-state physics, and semiconductor epitaxy. A new field of materials science has emerged which aims at the use of the intrinsic properties of various oxide materials in single-crystal thin-film form. Exploiting the potential of these materials, however, will only be possible if many fundamental and engineering questions can be answered. This book represents continued progress toward fulfilling that promise. Technical information on epitaxial oxide thin films from industry, academia and government laboratories is presented. Topics include: dielectrics; ferroelectrics; optics; superconductors; magnetics; magnetoresistance.

Book excerpt: As a result of the progress towards, and potential realized in electronic and optical device applications, the interest in epitaxial oxide thin films continue to flourish. The understanding of epitaxial oxide heterostructures has progressed, including magnetic, magnetoresistive, dielectric, ferroelectric and superconducting oxide materials. This book focuses on the fundamental issues of oxide epitaxy, microstructural evolution in epitaxy, and physical properties of epitaxial oxide thin films and how these issues relate to device applications. The book provides a vehicle through which groups of scientists working on a set of diverse phenomena could interact and present findings on very common specific themes involving similar materials. Due to the explosive growth of work in the area of colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) materials, especially in epitaxial form, the book also offers a forum to critically examine the fundamental nature of CMR in epitaxial oxide thin films and the relationship between CMR and defect structure. Other areas of emphasis include: ferroelectric memories, nonlinear optical waveguides, microwave electronics and magnetic oxide thin films.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epitaxial hetero-structures have been turned to in recent years in an attempt to eliminate charge fluctuations in Josephson junction-based quantum bits. Amorphous tunnel-barriers have large numbers of two-level fluctuators that can couple to the quantum states in the device. Single-crystal tunnel-barriers on the other hand show a reduced density of these two-level fluctuators. For my thesis research I studied the hetero-epitaxy of aluminum oxide on niobium, and the use of these aluminum oxide thin films as tunnel-barriers. Single-crystal Nb/Al2O3 and Nb/Al2O3/Nb multi-layers were grown by molecular beam epitaxy and characterized using a variety of materials analysis techniques. Atomically-flat niobium films grown on A-plane sapphire were used for the subsequent hetero-epitaxy of aluminum oxide. Depending on the thermal treatment used during growth, these niobium films had two distinct surface reconstructions. Using in situ RHEED I found that the growth of Al2O3 was highly dependent on the surface reconstruction of the underlying niobium film. Alumina films on annealed Nb had a hexagonal lattice that was under an isotropic tensile strain that relaxed with increasing film thickness. In contrast, alumina films on unannealed Nb showed an asymmetric strain and a pseudo-hexagonal lattice closely resembling that of the underlying niobium. Epitaxial niobium over-layers also tiled these two alumina surfaces differently, with in-plane orientations suggestive of irregular cation sublattices in the oxide film. It was also found using TEM imaging that an atomically sharp interface existed between the aluminum oxide film and the base niobium layer. However, mixing was seen to occur with the deposition of the over-layer, causing a deterioration of the alumina barrier. This mixing had a profound effect on tunnel-junctions fabricated from these tri-layers. Devices showed very poor qualities overall, with current-voltage characteristics indicative of a large density of electrical pinholes. With these findings in mind, some potential solutions are proposed.

Book excerpt: Epitaxial thin films and heterostructures based on perovskite oxides have attracted significant attention in physics since perovskites exhibit an enormous range of electrical, magnetic, and optical properties, making them exciting systems for studies of the fundamental physical mechanisms of interactions between electron, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom. This dissertation has been focused on ferroelectricity in low-dimensional ferroelectric materials using ultra-thin ferroelectric epitaxial films (BaTiO3) with a metallic electrode (SrRuO3) by studying polarized ordering of the crystal structure and electronic transport through the films. High quality and highly oxidized epitaxial films are a prerequisite for the clear observation of physical properties such as ferroelectricity which depends on a sensitive balance of lattice structure, dynamics, and charge distribution. Measurements in low dimensional, ultra-thin films require a controlled surface status through in-situ characterization. As is demonstrated here, fundamental physical phenomena on surfaces and in ultra-thin films are easily modified due to reactivity in ambient air, even for oxide materials generally considered inert. This study is centered on in-situ low energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling spectroscopy of BaTiO3 films grown on SrRuO3 electrodes on a SrTiO3 substrate. Results show out-of-plane polarized structure and polarization switching, which provide evidence of ferroelectricity in films down to 4 ML. Surface reconstruction in 1-2 ML thick BaTiO3 films is seriously affected by the interface between BaTiO3 films and SrRuO3 bottom electrode. Our observation in epitaxial BaTiO3 films indicates the existence of ferroelectricity with a lower limit (4 ML) for the minimum thickness than theoretical expectation (6 ML), which results from the difference of film stress, termination on films, and depolarizing screening.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there has been steady progress in understanding aspects of epitaxial growth throughout the last 30 years of modern surface science, work in this area has intensified greatly in the last 5 years. A number of factors have contributed to this expansion. One has been the general trend in surface science to tackle problems of increasing complexity as confidence is gained in the methodology, so for example, the role of oxide/metal interfaces in determining the properties of many practical supported catalysts is now being explored in greater detail. A second factor is the recognition of the potential importance of artificial multilayer materials not only in semiconductor devices but also in metal/metal systems because of their novel magnetic properties. Perhaps even more important than either of these application areas, however, is the newly-discovered power of scanning probe microscopies, and most notably scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), to provide the means to study epitaxial growth phenomena on an atomic scale under a wide range of conditions. These techniques have also contributed to revitalised interest in methods of fabricating and exploiting artificial structures (lateral as well as in layers) on a nanometre scale. This volume, on Growth and Properties of Ultrathin Epitaxial Layers, includes a collection of articles which reflects the present state of activity in this field. The emphasis is on metals and oxides rather than semiconductors.

Book excerpt: Oxide materials have been used in mainstream semiconductor technology for several decades and have served as important components, such as gate insulators or capacitors, in integrated circuits. However, in recent decades, this material class has emerged in its own right as a potential contender for alternative technologies, generally designated as ‘beyond Moore’. The 2004 discovery by Ohtomo and Hwang was a global trendsetter in this context. It involved observing a two-dimensional, high-mobility electron gas at the heterointerface between two insulating oxides, LaAlO3 and SrTiO3, supported by the rise of nascent deposition and growth-monitoring techniques, which was an important direction in materials science research. The quest to understand the origin of this unparalleled physical property and to find other emergent properties has been an active field of research in condensed matter that has united researchers with expertise in diverse fields such as thin-film growth, defect control, advanced microscopy, semiconductor technology, computation, magnetism and electricity, spintronics, nanoscience, and nanotechnology.
