Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In accordance with the aims of the series "Physical Methods in Organic Chemistry," of which this book forms part, the authors r main aim was a systematic account of the most important methods of using the method of dipole moments in organic chemistry and interpreting its results in practice. Since 1955, when two monographs devoted to the fundamentals and applications of the dipole moment method appeared simultaneously (C. P. Smyth, Dielectric Behavior and Structure, McGraw-Hill, New York; and J. W. Smith, Electric Dipole Moments, Butterworths, London), no generalizing studies of this type have appeared in the Russian and foreign literature. Nevertheless, it is just in this per iod that almost half of all publications on the structure and proper ties of organic compounds by means of the dipole moment method have appeared. During this time, the principles of the method of measure mentand the physical theory of the method have not undergone fundamental changes. Consequently, in giving an account of these matters we considered it sufficient to give a very short introduction to the theory of the method that is not burdened with details of the mathematical derivations and the strict formalism of the theory of dielectrics which are hardly used in the applications of the method that are of interest to the organiC chemist (Chapter I).

Book excerpt: Extensive experimentation and high failure rates are a well-recognized downside to the drug discovery process, with the resultant high levels of inefficiency and waste producing a negative environmental impact. Sustainable and Green Approaches in Medicinal Chemistry 2e reveals how medicinal chemistry can play a direct role in addressing this issue. After providing essential context to the growth of green chemistry in relation to drug discovery, the book goes on to identify a broad range of practical techniques and useful insights, revealing how medicinal chemistry techniques can be used to improve efficiency, mitigate failure and increase the environmental benignity of the entire drug discovery process. Drawing on the knowledge of a global team of experts, Sustainable and Green Approaches in Medicinal Chemistry, Second Edition encourages the growth of green medicinal chemistry, and supports medicinal chemists, drug discovery researchers, pharmacologists and all those in related fields across both academia and industry in integrating these approaches into their own work. This second volume of the second edition includes the development of nanoparticles and nanocomposites, as well as the application of ultrasound and microwave-induced methods; studies solventless synthesis; defines the role of steroids; studies reactions in aqueous solution; identifies enzyme-mediated reactions; investigates ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents; explores natural products; investigates solid supports; realizes the effects of salts; focuses on combinatorial chemistry; develops one-pot methods; analyzes multi-component reactions; investigates dipole moment values; and examines computer-assisted methods. Highlights the need for adoption of sustainable and green chemistry pathways in drug development Reveals risk factors associated with the drug development process and the ways sustainable approaches can help address these Identifies novel and cost effective green medicinal chemistry approaches for improved efficiency and sustainability

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper investigates the experimentation methods in the realm of finding a finite, dependable value for the neutron Electric Dipole Moment (nEDM). Finding a reliable value for the nEDM would elucidate the structure of the Universe from physical perspective. The spectacular possibilities associated with this research would give rise to a new sphere of knowledge of the material world. The paper examines the CP and T violation, Ultra Cold Neutron (UCN) and the modelling of the neutron spin. Also, it focuses on the contemporary models of experiments in this field, including the Room-temperature Experiment. Moreover, we have to solve the difficulties due to statistical and systematic uncertainties too. Until these sorts of uncertainties (for example, the Geometric Phase Effect) are solved, we cannot find out a dependable value for the nEDM.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some Electrical and Optical Aspects of Molecular Behaviour deals with dipole moments, molecular science, and molecular polarizability. The author explains the refractive index and the electric permittivity including polarization, polarizability, the Mossotti-Clausius equation, molar polarization, and molar refraction. The author also addresses the results of dipole moment measurements, the significance of the values obtained, and how these can determine molecular structural features. By using the Debye equation, one can determine the molecular moments of polar solutes in non-polar solvents. The book discusses how molecular polarizability and molecular polarization are measured and how these factors are associated with molecular structure. He also explains light scattering and the molecular weight of solutes by employing the research made by Debye which determines the weights, shapes, and interactions of molecules in solution. The author also addresses the form and order of the magnitude of interaction energies and cites typical examples of these occurrences. These energies often represent an electrostatic nature; in some ways, they can be understood as being quantum-mechanical in nature. This book can be helpful for students taking up dipole moments, molecular polarizability or molecular science.

Book excerpt: The COSMO-RS technique is a novel method for predicting the thermodynamic properties of pure and mixed fluids which are important in many areas, ranging from chemical engineering to drug design. COSMO-RS, From Quantum Chemistry to Fluid Phase Thermodynamics and Drug Design is about this novel technology, which has recently proven to be the most reliable and efficient tool for the prediction of vapour-liquid equilibria. In contrast to group contribution methods, which depend on an extremely large number of experimental data, COSMO-RS calculates the thermodynamic data from molecular surface polarity distributions, resulting from quantum chemical calculations of the individual compounds in the mixture. In this book, the author cleverly combines a vivid overview of the partly demanding theoretical steps with a deeper analysis of their scientific background and justification. Aimed at theoretical chemists, computational chemists, physical chemists, chemical engineers, thermodynamicists as well as students, academic and industrial experts, COSMO-RS, From Quantum Chemistry to Fluid Phase Thermodynamics and Drug Design provides a novel viewpoint to anyone looking to gain more insight into the theory and potential of the unique method, COSMO-RS. The only book currently available on COSMO-RS technique Provides a novel viewpoint for the scientific understanding and for the practical quantitative treatment of fluid phase thermodynamics Includes illustrative examples of the COSMOtherm program

Book excerpt: Case Studies in Atomic Physics III focuses on case studies on atomic and molecular physics, including atomic collisions, transport properties of electrons, ions, molecules, and photons, interaction potentials, spectroscopy, and surface phenomena. The selection first discusses detailed balancing in the time-dependent impact parameter method, as well as time-reversal in the impact parameter method and coupled state approximation. The text also examines the mechanisms of electron production in ion. Topics include measurement of doubly differential cross sections and electron spectra, direct Coulomb ionization, autoionization and Auger effect, charge transfer to continuum states, and electron promotion. The book takes a look at the production of inner-shell vacancies in heavy ion-atom collisions and hyperfine and Zeeman studies of metastable atomic states by atomic-beam magnetic-resonance. Topics include molecular orbital model, experimental considerations, and theoretical considerations and interpretation of experimental results. The manuscript also evaluates the coupled integral-equation approach to nonrelativistic three-body systems with applications to atomic problems, including kinematic theory of three-body system, reduction of the coupled equations, and application to atomic problems. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in atomic and molecular physics.
