Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The turbulent mixing of confined axisymmetric incompressible jets was studied, using the turbulent boundary layer equations in terms of transformed von Mises variables, with semi-empirical formulations of the turbulent transport coefficients. The solution was obtained by the method of finite differences. Analytical predictions of the jet mixing flow fields were obtained for several configurations, covering a resonably wide range of values of the problem parameters. A turbulent mixing model which satisfactorily predicts mean flow profiles for a reasonably broad spectrum of flow conditions has been formulated.

Book excerpt: This volume collects various contributions from the 5th International Conference on Jets, Wakes and Separated Flows (ICJWSF2015) that took place in Stockholm during June 2015. Researchers from all around the world presented their latest results concerning fundamental and applied aspects of fluid dynamics. With its general character, the conference embraced many aspects of fluid dynamics, such as shear flows, multiphase flows and vortex flows, for instance. The structure of the present book reflects the variety of topics treated within the conference i.e. Jets, Wakes, Separated flows, Vehicle aerodynamics, Wall-bounded and confined flows, Noise, Turbomachinery flows, Multiphase and reacting flows, Vortex dynamics, Energy-related flows and a section dedicated to Numerical analyses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements and computations are reported for the flow of a turbulent jet discharging into a crossflow confined between two parallel plates. For jet-to-crossflow velocity ratios R equal to 2 and 4, mean and fluctuating velocity components are measured by a laser Doppler anemometer. High order statistics of the streamwise velocity and its time derivative have been measured in the plane of symmetry of a jet in a confined crossflow. The existence of universal similarity of the fine scale structure of a developing turbulent velocity field and the validity of original Kolmogorov local similarity theory and later formulations were investigated. Construction of normalized spectral for energy content, dissipation, and higher order moments enable an examination of the Reynolds number dissipation, and higher order moments enable an examination of the Reynolds number dependence of these functions for the Re sub lamda range from 16 to 800. Estimates of the Kolmogorov constant, mu, ranging from 0.27 to 0.43 were obtained with the arithmetic average equal to 0.38. The fractal dimension of the fine scale structure was estimated from the functional relationship between the flatness of the velocity time derivative and Re sub lambda. For unfiltered data, the fractal dimension was estimated to be 2.45. However, with a + or - 12 sigma bandwidth, the fractal dimension increased to 2. 73.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains contributions by former students, colleagues and friends of Professor John L. Lumley, on the occasion of his 60th birthday, in recognition of his enormous impact on the advancement of turbulence research. A variety of experimental, computational and theoretical topics, including turbulence modeling, direct numerical simulations, compressible turbulence, turbulent shear flows, coherent structures and the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition are contained herein. The diversity and scope of these contributions are further acknowledgment of John Lumley's wide ranging influence in the field of turbulence. The large number of contributions by the authors, many of whom were participants in The Lumley Symposium: Recent Developments in Turbulence (held at ICASE, NASA Langley Research Center on November 12 & 13, 1990), has presented us with the unique opportu nity to select a few numerical and theoretical papers for inclusion in the journal Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics for which Professor Lumley serves as Editor. Extended Abstracts of these pa pers are included in this volume and are appropriately marked. The special issue of TCFD will appear this year and will serve as an additional tribute to John Lumley. As is usually the case, the efforts of others have significantly eased our tasks. We would like to express our deep appreciation to Drs. R.

Book excerpt: Chemical propulsion comprises the science and technology of using chemical reactions of any kind to create thrust and thereby propel a vehicle or object to a desired acceleration and speed. Cumbustion Processes in Propulsion focuses on recent advances in the design of very highly efficient, low-pollution-emitting propulsion systems, as well as advances in testing, diagnostics and analysis. It offers unique coverage of Pulse Detonation Engines, which add tremendous power to jet thrust by combining high pressure with ignition of the air/fuel mixture. Readers will learn about the advances in the reduction of jet noise and toxic fuel emissions-something that is being heavily regulated by relevant government agencies. Lead editor is one of the world's foremost combustion researchers, with contributions from some of the world's leading researchers in combustion engineering Covers all major areas of chemical propulsion-from combustion measurement, analysis and simulation, to advanced control of combustion processes, to noise and emission control Includes important information on advanced technologies for reducing jet engine noise and hazardous fuel combustion emissions

Book excerpt: A numerical investigation is reported of turbulent incompressible jets confined in two ducts, one cylindrical and the other conical with a 5 degree divergence. In each case, three Craya-Curtet numbers are considered which correspond, respectively, to flow situations with no moderate and strong recirculation. Turbulence closure is achieved by using the k-epsilon model and a recently proposed realizable Reynolds stress algebraic equation model that relates the Reynolds stresses explicitly to the quadratic terms of the mean velocity gradients and ensures the positiveness of each component of the turbulent kinetic energy. Calculations are carried out with a finite-volume procedure using boundary-fitted curvilinear coordinates. A second-order accurate, bounded convection scheme and sufficiently fine grids are used to prevent the solutions from being contaminated by numerical diffusion. The calculated results are compared extensively with the available experimental data. It is shown that the numerical methods presented are capable of capturing the essential flow features observed in the experiments and that the realizable Reynolds stress algebraic equation model performs much better than the k-epsilon model for this class of flows of great practical importance.
