Book excerpt: An extrapolation of the ISABELLE 200-200 GeV/sup 2/ proton--proton storage rings to higher energy was studied, and the conceptual design is presented for a 400-400 GeV/sup 2/ version. The basic storage ring structure was so modified that the circumference of the rings could be substantially increased without an increase of the transition energy. Because of the now well established microwave longitudinal bunched beam instability, this is essential in maintaining a viable longitudinal impedance limit for the overall structure. The principal parameters for the 400 GeV structure are given and compared with the basic 200 GeV design. Performance limitations, where they may differ from the 200 GeV design are indicated. Each 400 GeV ring uses superconducting magnets essentially identical to those employed in the 200 GeV design, but energized to 50 kG peak field. The justification for this is given together with other technical features differing from the basic design. It is concluded that for a cost increase of 40% over the basic p--p storage ring design, twice the center-of-mass energy could be provided for the ISABELLE proton--proton colliding beam facility.

Book excerpt: A conceptual design report is given for 400 x 400 GeV proton-proton storage rings. A facility is described with twice the energy capability of the recently proposed ISABELLE. The basic accelerator lattice was modified so that the circumference of the magnet rings can be increased substantially without an increase in the transition energy. Each 400 GeV ring uses superconducting magnets of the type described in the ISABELLE Proposal, but energized to 50 kG. Other technical features are not significantly different from the 200 GeV design, and are described. The beams will collide in six interaction regions where up to 60 m of space is available for the installation of experimental equipment. The research possibilities that are provided by the increased center-of-mass energy are briefly described. Finally, a cost estimate of 238 million dollars for the research facility is outlined. This is nearly 40% more than the cost of the 200 GeV ISABELLE, but this facility would provide twice the energy available for exploring new regions of high energy physics.

Book excerpt: In order to provide for electron-proton collisions in the PEP system, plans for a high-energy superconducting proton storage ring are being explored. The energy is constrained to 300 GeV by the radius of the PEP tunnel (350 meters) and the field strength (7 tesla) expected to be available in practical superconducting magnets. A new configuration has been developed in which the proton ring vertically crosses the horizontal electron ring in 4 of the 6 straight-sections. Synchronization of the two beams is provided by means of bypasses in the two non-crossing straight sections in the electron ring. The proton injector is a 5 GeV/c synchrotron 1/18 as large as the main ring.
