Book Synopsis High Conversion Bulk Copolymerisation of Methyl Methacrylate with N-butyl Acrylate by : Mark Thomas O'Brien
Download or read book High Conversion Bulk Copolymerisation of Methyl Methacrylate with N-butyl Acrylate written by Mark Thomas O'Brien and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this project has been to synthesize organic polymeric materials for light transmission purposes. The requirements for such materials is that they should be transparent to light and flexible. Bulk polymerisation of methyl methacrylate yielded stiff, optically transparent materials. In an attempt to increase the flexibility of the bulk polymerised materials, methyl methacrylate was copolymerised with n-butyl acrylate. It was found that the products became increasingly flexible with increasing content of n-butyl acrylate, but they were opaque to light over a significant proportion of the composition range despite the fact that the homopolymers of the respective monomers were completely transparent. The cause of this opacity is not a simple problem and has been attributed to phase separation processes. An attempt has been made to quantify the extent of phase separation with comonomer composition and to interpret this separation phenomenon on the basis of (1) published work on two- and multi-component polymer systems, and (2) the high conversion copolymerisation behaviour. There is evidence that the presence of residual or unreacted monomer may play an important part in the phase separation process. In particular, it may act as a solvent for the various polymeric components or as an external plasticiser. The addition of low molecular weight additives known for their ability to plasticize high polymers has been tentatively explored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this special volume on polymer particles, recent trends and developments in the synthesis of nano- to micron-sized polymer particles by radical polymerization (Emulsion, Miniemulsion, Microemulsion, and Dispersion Polymerizations) of vinyl monomers in environmentally friendly heterogeneous aqueous and supercritical carbon dioxide fluid media are reviewed by prominent worldwide researchers. In addition to the important challenges and possibilities with regards to design and preparation of functionalized polymer particles of controlled size, the topics described are of great current interest due to the increased awareness of environmental issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2-volume set includes extensive discussions of scattering techniques (light, neutron and X-ray) and related fluctuation and grating techniques that are at the forefront of this field. Most of the scattering techniques are Fourier space techniques. Recent advances have seen the development of powerful direct imaging methods such as atomic force microscopy and scanning probe microscopy. In addition, techniques that can be used to manipulate soft matter on the nanometer scale are also in rapid development. These include the scanning probe microscopy technique mentioned above as well as optical and magnetic tweezers.
