Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Literature This book is intended as a textbook for secondary schools; it is a guide to the study of the classics read in these schools and required for admission to college in English. Its purpose is not to take the place of the introductions and notes of the annotated editions, but to supplement them. The objects of the study of any classic in the secondary schools are four: (1) to understand the language of the classic; (2) to appreciate its literary qualities, especially those qualities that make the classic a masterpiece of the type of literature to which it belongs; (3) to realize the connection of the classic with life, and (4) to fix the place of the classic in literary history. For the first of these objects, the annotated editions give ample help. In this textbook, therefore, purely philological notes have been, for the most part, avoided. In Part I, the primary aim has been to define briefly the various literary types and to impress their most salient characteristics by an inductive study of representative classics. An effort has also been made to bring the thought of the classics into relation with ordinary experience. There are some who believe such a "literary study" impracticable. The author thinks otherwise. His experience in teaching in the secondary schools has led him to believe that something more can be done to systematize "literary study." He realizes the difficulty of keeping a consistent course between the obvious and trivial on the one hand, and the vague and impressional on the other, and can hardly expect to be free from error in one or the other direction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Method in the Reading of Complete English Classics in the Grades of the Common School The effort to gather into a rising series the best classic products Of our English tongue and to appropriate them to direct school purposes is very inspiring. It Opens up a field Of great rich ness and culture to both teachers and children. If all our teachers in the common schools should read with thoughtful appreciation ten or a dozen of the best books in the series, it. Would surely improve the teaching in all our schools by twenty five per cent. The best literature suited to the grades has a variety Of close and vital relations to nearly all the other studies as, for example, to history, ge ography, natural science, and language. Since literature is so elevating and so many-sided in its culture influence, it supplies a solid basis for the correlation and unification of studies now SO much discussed. The other books of the series can be Seen in the price list at the end Of this book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reading Courses in American Literature Frequent inquiries by members of reading circles, by college students, and others, for a systematic course of reading in the American Classics have led the author to the publication of the following pages, originally prepared for use with his elective courses. The value of systematic reading need not be dwelt upon, and the inability of the average reader to select his own path needs no comment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Empirical Studies in School Reading: With Special Reference to the Evaluation of Literary Reading Books Among the many scientific studies of education which have been reported in recent years, few have been concerned directly with the determination of the prevailing tendencies in textbook making, with the use of textbooks in schools, or with establishing the merits of various types and kinds of textbook material intended for classroom instruction. Attention has frequently been directed to the measurement of intelligence, to the grading and distribution of pupils, to economy in the course of study, to the standardizing of equipment, and to objective measures of attainment, but hardly at all to the evaluating of textbooks. These have been left to their authors and editors and to the commercial agencies Which produce them. The result is we have a body of textbook tradi tions, gradually changing from time to time, like fashions in dress or house furnishing, but without much scientific basis for judgment of merits or demerits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Reading: Teacher's Manual Part I includes a discussion of the reading field, the lesson plan, teaching beginners to read, and offers a series of definite grade-by-grade helps. Typical studies are worked out for each grade, and clever hints and suggestions for enlivening the work on a sound basis are given at every turn. Part II directly supplements and illuminates Part I. It deals clearly and definitely with such essentials as word and sentence recognition, vocabulary building and phonics, supplementary helps and seat work, securing good expression, silent reading and how to study, the use of the dictionary and reference books, supplementary reading, and the life values of oral and silent reading. While the teacher may find in Part I a definite guide for her work, she should read carefully, and continually refer to, Part II as a ready help in broadening and extending her definite program on an educational basis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Dickens: Edited for the Chautauqua Home Reading Series This series of "Studies in Dickens" sketches the career of the great novelist in the words of biographers and critics and collectors of reminiscences who have written about outstanding events of his life and about his work. The world that wept and laughed at his will, marked his passing years as those that produced one or another of the stories that moved them so powerfully. The initiated knew that from the sordid days of his childhood to the triumphs of his age, the ordinary experiences of work and play, the joys of fatherhood and the sorrows of bereavement, the toil that builds the foundation and the success that touches the pinnacle with fire - all were his. The selections of this volume show both his public and his private life. It is right to think of Dickens as the Prince of Laughmakers. That rank was his; but he was also the Prince of Moralists and the Prince of Humanitarians. The earliest figure that emerged with definite outline from the shade of Boz's portfolio, Mr. Pickwick in his own genial person, preached the gospel of joy and the beauty of unselfishness and the need of help for the poor and the troubled - a religion enlarged in detail but not in scope in all the writer's after work.
