Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Literature Part II consists of a brief survey of English literature with assigned readings from the literature itself. Much study about authors whose books the student has never read is of doubt ful utility. A wiser plan is to use a very brief account of the literature in connection with a considerable amount of reading in the literature itself arranged chronologically. In studying Part II, therefore, emphasis should be placed upon the sug gested readings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies in Literature That these brief chapters may prove helpful to readers of books who desire to become students of literature, is the hope which the writer ventures to cherish in the face of defects more obvious to him than to the most unsympathetic critic. These studies are not critical but interpretative; they are neither exhaustive nor inclusive; they are mainly hints and suggestions. Each chapter might be elaborated into a volume. If they serve to indicate the leading lines of literary development, the fundamental divisions and distinctions, the deep and vital tendencies, they will accomplish the end for which they were written. That they represent deep convictions concerning the significance of literature rather than a purely critical attitude, will be apparent to the most indifferent reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Literature: Second Series The First of these 'studies' was originally read before an audience at the University College of Nottingham, inaugurating ac 'Byron Lectureship.' All the others were delivered as lectures in the New Arts Schools at Cambridge. In the preface to a former volume I admitted that the word 'studies' might well seem ill-descriptive;and gave half a promise to justify the title better in this its successor. I am well aware that this half-promise is not kept in the following pages. It was given in the latter days of the War, when few of us felt able to hope that our then deserted Colleges would fill again in our time; when some of us prophesied an end for ourselves of sad retirement in the shade of libraries; when none of us, I will swear, anticipated what was to come upon us, as it were in a tidal wave - the amazing, portentous, refluence of youth into the Universities. It came; and it was such that we could scarcely have coped with it, even if prepared. I for one, at any rate, had to revert hastily to the old method of familiar discourse if the hungry generations were not to tread me down. I must offer my apologies to the reader for the result, but my thanks to Heaven for the cause. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The best possible reason that can be given for the preparation of a work of this kind, is that it furnishes to both teachers and students a method of study that necessarily leads to certain definite and much valued results, among which are the following: A better appreciation of artistic merit in poetry; a knowledge of. The relation of the mythology of Greece and Rome to the poetry of every European nation and language of modern times; the power to use this golden key. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1895, this early work of psychology is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. It contains Freud and Breuer's case studies of hysteria and their methods of psychoanalytic treatment. This is a fascinating work and is thoroughly recommended for anyone with an interest in the history of psychology. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Several Literatures Several years ago, Mr. Andrew Carnegie, who is always doing something interesting and unexpected, gave to the public his opinion as to the literary and ethical value of Homer. Not a few persons were in clined to mock at this deliverance and to recall the old maxim that the cobbler should stick to his last. Mr. Carnegie, they said, might know more about iron and steel than any other living man; but why should he put himself forward as an authority on Classical literature? He himself would certainly not have listened with much respect to the views of Professor Gildersleeve or the late Sir Richard Jebb on the subject of iron tubing and steel rails. It has little advantage of subject. When the volumes came out, an honest man said, I suppose something happened between the years 1689 and 1697 but what happened I do not know Every one knows now. No period with so little obvious interest will henceforth be so familiarly known. Only a most felicitous and rather curious genius could and would shed such a light on such an age. Ifin the following pages we Seem to cavil and find fault, let it be remembered, that the business of a critic is criticism that it is not his business to be thankful; that he must attempt an estimate rather than a eulogy.
