Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Early Church History The period of which these studies treat extends from the time of Christ to the reign of Constantine, the first Christian Roman Emperor. This era has been called, The Heroic Age of the Church It was during these three hundred years that Christianity encountered the bitter hostility of the Roman and Greek religions and systems of philosophy and was under the ban of the civil power. It was then that it formulated its doctrines, set forth its principles, wrote its New Testament books and endured its fiery persecutions. In the enthusiasm and freshness of their faith, its converts dared all things; no tasks were too hard, no hardships too great and no tortures too painful, when called for in the name of Jesus Christ, the Lord and Saviour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Early Church History Collected Papers The volume to which these pages are a preface contains such pieces of my published work down to the end of the year 1894 as it seemed possible and desirable to gather together into a single whole. It is an instalment of a series to which on my fiftieth birthday I resolved to devote myself. Tempus collectum est; my literary workshop was piled up with a number of undertakings in a more or less advanced stage of development, and it seemed an imperative duty to finish some of them off and clear them out of the way before anything further could legitimately be planned. It is easier to make such a resolution than to keep it to the letter; but in the result some half-dozen of these older ventures are now either in port or in sight of it. The first to arrive was a chapter on the Organization of the Church contributed to the Cambridge Medieval History. Next after that the present volume has been pushed forward, because I hold strongly that every scholar ought, at some time during his maturer life, to search and sift his own iuvenilia, and, if he determines that any parts of them are worth preserving, then to make the selection himself and himself to be responsible for the more permanent form which they are to take. Posthumous publication or republication of early writings is neither fair to the writer nor to his friends nor to the public. To the then editor of the Guardian (and a kindlier editor than Mr. D. C. Lathbury no young author ever served under) I believe that I owe the privilege of a first appearance in print; but reviews are seldom worth republishing, and from my own reviews in the Guardian the only salvage I should wish to secure are some suggestions which may perhaps one day find a place in a collection of 'Adversaria' on the textual criticism of the early Christian documents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pauline and Other Studies in Early Christian History IN the Second Edition a detail is corrected in p. 261 (involving a slight modification in the former Preface, lines 8 the misplacement of Plate XII., XIII. Is rectified, Plate II., p. 160, is set upright, and several other slight improvements are made. The recent discovery at Delphi of an inscription which is said to prove that Gallio was Proconsul of Achaia in a.d. 52, confirms in a very satisfactory way the chronology advocated in the fourteenth paper of this volume (differing only in one or two very slight details from that adopted in St. Paul tile Travel/er). If Gallio was Proconsul in 52, it can hardly be doubted that the eighteen months of Paul's residence in Corinth extended from Autumn 51 to Spring 53. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Church History The present volume is made up of a number of essays and reviews which have already been published in the pages of The Catholic World. They are for the most part summaries of important volumes on Church History and synopses of important articles in some of the leading French encyclopedias. Many of the questions discussed in these pages are continually being asked, by earnest seekers after the truth, through the medium of the Question Box on the Paul ist missions to non-catholics. Out of many volumes of typewritten questions actually submitted during the past seventeen years I find the following. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Modern Church History In placing this book in the hands of its publishers 1 hope to be regarded as showing my appreciation of the courtesy and kindness of the successive classes to which the lectures were delivered, in calling for their publication, as well as of the very gratifying manner in which this request was so re peatedly conveyed to me. I wish also in this way to indi cate the gratification I feel in recalling the gentlemanly bear ing of each class towards one whose only claim to their consideration was a sincere desire to be of service. The lectures were first delivered while Dr. T. J. Morgan was Professor of Church History in the Seminary; but chiefly since that important chair has been occupied by Dr. E. B. Hulbert. To both these gentlemen my thanks are due for the privilege of thus sharing with them in their work. It will not be improper, I trust, for me to speak of the special attention given by Dr. Hulbert to the department of church history treated of in these pages, and of the marked interest his students show in those aspects of historical Christianity which concern the church and the world as they now are. Under the leadership of President Northrup the Seminary is adapting its course of study in many ways to the peculiar needs of the present time, and in the particular here alluded to by no means least of all. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eminent church historian and theologian Professor Williston Walker gives us an authoritative and scholarly account on the progress of the church founded by Christ, aptly titled A History of the Christian Church. First published in 1918, this edition has since gone on to become one of the classics in Christian literature. It examines various periods that led to the establishment of the church and how the Reformation came about in light of the preceding events. The author begins this volume with a discussion on the general situation before proceeding to talk about Judaism, the rise of Jesus and his disciples, the end of the apostolic era and the development of Christianity in the second century AD. From Gnosticism at the beginning of the book, he ends with the eventual transition to the modern situation, tackling various subjects such as English Unitarianism, Methodism, Catholicism, and even American Christianity - religious denominations and divisions which remain relevant to this day. The exhaustive nature of Professor Walker's work shows his expertise in the subject and the extent of the research he has done to produce a classic historical account of superb quality. Students of religious studies, as well as those seeking enlightenment on the development of the modern Christian church will benefit much from this clearly written and comprehensive opus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agape and the Eucharist in the Early Church: Studies in the History of the Christian Love-Feasts The attention of scholars has lately been directed afresh to the subject of the Agape by the translation of the Canons of Hippolytus and of The Testament of our Lord, and quite recently, by the publication by Dr Hauler, from the Verona palimpsest, of the Latin Didascalia, and the Egyptian Church Order (Canonum Reliquiae), of which the one lies behind, and the other is also - but less closely - related to the Apostolic Constitutions. The present investigation does not claim to have added largely to what was already known on the subject. The Agape has long been regarded as, if not, like Mary Queen of Scots, "the eternal enigma of history," at least one of the obscurest of problems, and I do not profess to have solved it. Indeed it is very doubtful if we have the materials for its complete solution even now after these fresh discoveries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies of the Heroes of the Early Church If the heroic element lent a charm to the study of Old Testament characters, it must give an added interest to the study of these makers of the early Church, whose every-day life was so full of heroism for the cross of Christ, and who, with one exception, gave his life for the Master. It would have been interesting to carry out the plan of the Character Studies, as in the first book of the series; but, in order to make the setting clear, it has been necessary to con fine this book to sketches. Rather than stories, that in these studies of the heroes we might also give the history of the Apostolic Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Church in the Light of the Monuments: A Study in Christian Archology This series of Handbooks is designed to meet a need, which, the Editors believe, has been widely felt, and which results in great measure from the predominant importance attached to Dogmatic and Moral Theology in the studies preliminary to the Priesthood. That the first place must of necessity be given to these subjects will not be disputed. But there remains a large outlying field of professional knowledge which is always in danger of being crowded out in the years before ordination, and the practical utility of which may not be fully realised until some experience of the ministry has been gained. It will be the aim of the present series to offer the sort of help which is dictated by such experience, and its developments will be largely guided by the suggestions, past and future, of the Clergy themselves. To provide Textbooks for Dogmatic Treatises is not contemplated - at any rate not at the outset. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
