Stress, substance abuse, violence, health problems, divorce, safety, and aging are but a few of the problems individuals address in their day-to-day interpersonal communication. That communication is critical to coping successfully with these challenges. Stressing the timeliness of such applied contributions, the International Communication Association instituted a regular feature in its newsletter on communication matters, and focused its most recent conference on applied issues in communication. This edited volume, containing individual chapters by original researchers, explores socially meaningful contributions to the study of interpersonal problems involving language and social action.

Written by established communication scholars and reflecting carefully conducted research, each case helps you apply abstract principles to specific situations, people, and relationships. As you read these cases, you'll also learn to appreciate how multiple communication dynamics work together to shape what happens in human interactions - for example, how a case focusing on self-disclosure also gives you insights into such issues as timing, context, and style of communication. And as you identify patterns revealed in the cases, you'll develop the ability to detect these patterns in your own interactions and ultimately make more informed choices about which patterns to foster and avoid in your interpersonal relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpersonal communication (IC) is a continuous game between the interacting interactants. It is a give and take - a continuous, dynamic flow that is linguistically realized as discourse as an on-going sequence of interactants' moves. Interpersonal communication is produced and interpreted by acting linguistically, and this makes it a fascinating research area. The handbook, Interpersonal Communication , examines how interactants manage to exchange facts, ideas, views, opinions, beliefs, emotion, etc. by using the linguistic systems and the resources they offer. In interpersonal communication, the fine-tuning of individuals' use of the linguistic resources is continuously probed. The language used in interpersonal communication enhances social relations between interactants and keeps the interaction on the normal track. When interaction gets off the track, linguistic miscommunication may also destroy social relationships. This volume is essentially concerned with this fine-tuning in discourse, and how it is achieved among various interactant groups. The volume departs from the following fundamental questions: How do interpersonal relations manifest themselves in language? What is the role of language in developing and maintaining relationships in interpersonal communication? What types of problems occur in interpersonal communication and what kind of strategies and means are used to solve them? How does linguistically realized interpersonal communication interact with other semiotic modes? Interpersonal communication is seen and researched from the perspective of what is being said or written, and how it is realized in various generic forms. The current research also gives attention to other semiotic modes which interact with the linguistic modes. It is not just the social roles of interactants in groups, the possible media available, the non-verbal behaviors, the varying contextual frames for communication, but primarily the actual linguistic manifestations that we need to focus upon when we want to have a full picture of what is going on in human interpersonal communication. It is this linguistic perspective that the volume aims to present to all researchers interested in IC. The volume offers an overview of the theories, methods, tools, and resources of linguistically-oriented approaches, e.g. from the fields of linguistics, social psychology, sociology, and semiotics, for the purpose of integration and further development of the interests in IC., Topics e.g.: Orientation to interaction as primarily linguistically realized processes Expertise on theorizing and analyzing cultural and situational contexts where linguistic processes are realized Expertise on handling language corpora Expertise on theorizing and analyzing interaction types as genres Orientation to an integrated view of linguistic and non-linguistic participant activities and of how interactants generate meanings and interact with space Expertise on researching the management of the linguistic flow in interaction and its successfulness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his time as a professor, the author has learned that although most university students are smart and capable, many of them go about their educations in a fashion that does not lead to success. This is because knowing what it takes to do well in college is never learned in high school, and really, it is never explicitly taught in college either. There are simple formulas for doing well in school and this book was written to give readers some of the keys to academic excellence. "So, You Are Going to College?!" (Second Edition) is a fun read, as the author's own research points to the notion that the more you like a class the more you: learn, are motivated to learn, are satisfied with your communication with your teacher, and participate in class. By reading this book, you will learn some of the expectations professors have of their students and you will learn some of the behaviors you need to perform if you want to do well in college. This enjoyable, yet brief and to the point, book includes: A look at some of the myths students have about professors and about college in general. Discussion on the number one rule for success in life, being an adult. Some of the expectations professors have for their communication with students. How to listen effectively in class, a guide to help students learn more and daydream less. The formulas for doing well on exams and helping students become aware of their goals in college.
