Book excerpt: This first general history of Greek theatre from Hellenistic times to the foundation of the Modern Greek state in 1830 marks a radical departure from traditional methods of historiography. We like to think of history unfolding continuously, in an evolutionary form, but the story of Greek theatre is rather different. After traditional theatre ended in the sixth and seventh centuries, no traditional drama was written or performed on stage throughout the Greek-speaking world for centuries due to the Orthodox Church's hostile attitude toward spectacles. With the reinvention of theatre in Renaissance Italy, however, Greek theatre was revived in Crete under Venetian rule in the late sixteenth century. The following centuries saw the restoration of Greek theatre at various locations, albeit characterized by numerous ruptures and discontinuities in terms of geography, stylistics, thematic approaches and ideologies. These diverse developments were only 'normalized' with the establishment of the Greek nation state.

Book excerpt: The gradual erosion of allegiance to the Monarchy in Croatia-Slavonia at the beginning of 20th century was a long and protracted process that saw the abandonment of the concept of Croatian state right for the principle of ethno-national self-determination. But the main objective of all variants of Croatian nationalism remained the reform of the constitutional arrangements in Austria-Hungary until almost the very end of its existence. It was only with the realisation that the Monarchy would cease to exist that the decision to accept unification with Serbia became an acceptable option. The subject of Fernando Veliz' study is the fundamental alteration of state allegiance, political claims and their respective legitimating arguments by political elites in Croatia-Slavonia during the last fifteen years of the Habsburg Monarchy. The argument has been developed by following a chronological narrative that incorporates a comparative analysis of the main political parties and actors in the Croatian parliament in Zagreb between 1903 and 1918. The analytical approach moves beyond the main paradigmatic debates of the literature of nationalism studies by conducting a theoretically informed historical analysis that seeks to contextualise local events within the wider framework of the changing international order. From a historiographical point of view, the emphasis on the lack of inevitability of outcomes makes this study sit uncomfortably with the grand narratives that have emerged about the creation of the first Yugoslavia, be it those who see it as inevitable and those who see it as inherently bound to fail from the outset.

Rather than focussing on their narrative content, human images are here interpreted as visualising and mediating identity. New research findings allow a profound insight into the personnel and institutional structure of the Academy as well as its scientific focus during the Nazi era. The "Anschluss" of Austria by the National Socialist German Reich in March 1938 marked a profound turning point for the Academy of Sciences in Vienna. With the Nazis' seizure of power, Academy members and staff members were forced to leave for political and "racial" reasons. They were persecuted and expelled; they died in Nazi concentration camps. Organizations like the Institute for Radium Research, the Vivarium, and the Phonogram Archive lost their key research personnel; worldwide pioneering research programs and international research collaborations were broken off. Under the Academy's new Nazi leadership, the learned society's autonomy was reduced and research projects in the support of Nazi ideology were carried out. The year 1945 was not a "zero hour." In addition to breaks, there were also continuities in the research institutes as well as the association of scholars. In dealing with Nazism, the Academy took an ambivalent stance: In the early postwar period, the membership of former Nazis was provisionally suspended. A few years later - pursuant to the Amnesty Law of 1948 - practically all former Nazi party members, even high-ranking officials, were re-admitted as members.

Landscapes are understood as products of human-environmental interaction. At the same time, they are arenas, in which societal and cultural activities as well as receptions of environments and human developments take place. Thus, environmental processes are interwoven into human constraints and advances. This book presents theories, concepts, approaches and case studies dealing with human development in landscapes. On the one hand, it becomes evident that only an interdisciplinary approach can cover the manifold aspects of the topic. On the other hand, this also implies that the very different approaches cannot be reduced to a simplistic uniform definition of landscape. This shortcoming proves nevertheless to be an important strength. The umbrella term 'landscape' proves to be highly stimulating for a large variety of different approaches. The first part of our book deals with a number of theories and concepts, the second part is concerned with approaches to landscapes, whereas the third part introduces case studies for human development in landscapes. As intended by the GSHDL, the reader might follow our approach to delve into the multi-faceted theories, concepts and practices on past landscapes: from events, processes and structures in environmental and produced spaces to theories, concepts and practices concerning past societies.
