Book Synopsis Bodhisattvas of the Forest and the Formation of the Mahayana by : Daniel Boucher
Download or read book Bodhisattvas of the Forest and the Formation of the Mahayana written by Daniel Boucher and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2008-09-02 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bodhisattvas of the Forest delves into the socioreligious milieu of the authors, editors, and propagators of the Rastrapalapariprccha-sutra (Questions of Rastrapala), a Buddhist text circulating in India during the first half of the first millennium C.E. In this meticulously researched study, Daniel Boucher first reflects upon the problems that plague historians of Mahayana Buddhism, whose previous efforts to comprehend the tradition have often ignored the social dynamics that motivated some of the innovations of this new literature. Following that is a careful analysis of several motifs found in the Indian text and an examination of the value of the earliest Chinese translation for charting the sutra’s evolution. The first part of the study looks at the relationship between the bodily glorification of the Buddha and the ascetic career—spanning thousands of lifetimes—that produced it within the socioeconomic world of early medieval Buddhist monasticism. The authors of the Rastrapala sharply criticize their monastic contemporaries for rejecting the rigorous lifestyle of the first Buddhist communities, an ideal that, for the sutra’s authors, self-consciously imitates the disciplines and sacrifices of the Buddha’s own bodhisattva career, the very career that led to his acquisition of bodily perfection. Thus, Boucher reveals the ways in which the authors of the Rastrapala authors co-opted this topos concerning the bodily perfection of the Buddha from the Mainstream tradition to subvert their co-religionists whose behavior they regarded as representing a degenerate version of that tradition. In Part 2 Boucher focuses on the third-century Chinese translation of the sutra attributed to Dharmaraksa and traces the changes in the translation to the late tenth century. The significance of this translation, Boucher explains, is to be found in the ways it differs from all other witnesses. These differences, which are significant, almost certainly reveal an earlier shape of the sutra before later editors were inspired to alter dramatically the text’s tone and rhetoric. The early Chinese translations, though invaluable in revealing developments in the Indian milieu that led to changes in the text, present particular challenges to the interpreter. It takes an understanding of not only their abstruse idiom, but also the process by which they were rendered from an undetermined Indian language into a Chinese cultural uh_product. One of the signal contributions of this study is Boucher’s skill at identifying the traces left by the process and ability to uncover clues about the nature of the source text as well as the world of the principal recipients. Bodhisattvas of the Forest concludes with an annotated translation of the Rastrapalapariprccha-sutra based on a new reading of its earliest extant Sanskrit manuscript. The translation takes note of important variants in Chinese and Tibetan versions to correct the many corruptions of the Sanskrit manuscript.

Wellington and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-08-30 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trying to identify abbreviated titles of journals and standard bibliographic works is a major difficulty facing researchers and librarians in the field of Classical Studies. This revised edition has been greatly expanded, with nearly twice the abbreviations (17,000) and bibliographic entries (12,400) as the first edition. Also, the Greek and Cyrillic abbreviations have increased by seven and four fold respectively. Abbreviations for internet sites are now included, as are those for associations in the broad area of Classical Studies. There are also more entries for Eastern European and regional archaeological publications. This revised volume is divided into two parts. Part One consists of an alphabetical listing of bibliographic abbreviations found in the scholarship of classical studies and related disciplines. Meanwhile, Part Two is an alphabetically arranged bibliographic descriptions for the works published in classical studies and related disciplines. Special efforts were made to increase the coverage in peripheral areas, making this new edition a useful reference tool for scholars in all subjects of study in the ancient and medieval world.

Book Synopsis Variation and Change in Spanish by : Ralph Penny
Download or read book Variation and Change in Spanish written by Ralph Penny and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-05-20 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book applies recent theoretical insights to trace the development of Castilian and Latin American Spanish from the Middle Ages onwards, through processes of repeated dialect mixing both within the Iberian Peninsula and in the New World. The author contends that it was this frequent mixing which caused Castilian to evolve more rapidly than other varieties of Hispano-Romance, and which rendered Spanish particularly subject to levelling of its linguistic irregularities and to simplification of its structures. These two processes continued as the language extended into and across the Americas. These processes are viewed in the context of the Hispano-Romance dialect continuum, which includes Galician, Portuguese and Catalan, as well as New World varieties. The book emphasises the subtlety and seamlessness of language variation, both geographical and social, and the impossibility of defining strict boundaries between varieties. Its conclusions will be relevant both to Hispanists and to historical sociolinguists more generally.

Book Synopsis In the Mirror of Memory by : Janet Gyatso
Download or read book In the Mirror of Memory written by Janet Gyatso and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the diverse array of species of memory in Buddhism. Contributors focus on a particular school, group of texts, terms, or practices and identify a considerable range of types of mnemonic faculties in Buddhism. Included are discussions of Buddhist teaching, meditation, visualization, prayer, commemoration of the Buddha, dha?rani practice, the use of mnemonic lists to condense lengthy scriptures, and the purported recollection of infinite previous lives that immediately preceded Sakyamuni's attainment of Buddhahood. Even enlightened awareness itself is said by some Buddhist schools to consist in a "mnemic engagement" with reality as such. The authors explore Buddhist views on mundane acts of memory such as recognizing, reminding, memorizing, and storing data as well as special types of memory that are cultivated in religious practice. One of the most striking discoveries is that perception is intimately related to certain types of memory. Several essays investigate if, and if so, how, meditative mindfulness and recollection of the past--both of which can be designated by the term smrti--are connected within the Buddhist tradition. The question of whether recollection of the past can be explained without violating the foundational Buddhist notions of radical impermanence and no-self is addressed by several of the contributing scholars. Among the primary sources for the studies in this volume are the northern and southern Abhidharma literature, the Ma?tka?s, Pa?li and Maha?ya?na su?tras, works of the Buddhist logicians, Yoga?ca?ra materials, the Tibetan Great Perfection (Rdzogschen) tradition, and Indian and Tibetan commentarial works. Affinities of Buddhist views on memory with those found in Western phenomenology, semiology, psychology, and history of religions are considered as well.

Download or read book A Garland of Light written by and published by Jain Publishing Company. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Garland of Light provides an overview of the Yogacara or mind-only teachings in the form of verses meant to inspire. It is in this way reminiscent of the inspiring Madhyamaka-oriented work, the Bodhi[sattva]caryavatara. Kambala apparently wrote it in the period of innocence just before Bhavya polarized the Buddhist community by his attacks on the Yogacara teachings. So here we have a syncretism where Yogacara and Madhyamaka are not inimical to each other. Indeed, mind-only (citta-matrata) is here equated with emptiness (sunyata). It is the best introduction to Yogacara available. Includes Sanskrit and Tibetan texts.
Book Synopsis The Stories of the Lotus Sutra by : Gene Reeves
Download or read book The Stories of the Lotus Sutra written by Gene Reeves and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 386 pages. It has been a seminal work in the development of Buddhism throughout East Asia and, by extension in the development of Mahayana Buddhism throughout the world. Taking place in a vast and fantastical cosmic setting, the Lotus Sutra places emphasis on skillfully doing whatever is needed to serve and compassionately care for others, on breaking down sharp distinctions between the ideals of the fully enlightened buddha and the bodhisattva who vows to postpone personal salvation until all beings may share it together, and especially on each and every being's innate capacity to become a buddha.

Book Synopsis Once a Peacock, Once an Actress by : Haribhatta
Download or read book Once a Peacock, Once an Actress written by Haribhatta and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Khoroche's translation of Arya Sura's "Jatakamala" (ca. fourth century) has sold more than fifteen-hundred copies in each of its editions. We now have a new translation of the "Jatakamala" by Haribhatta, a later contemporary of Arya Sura's. Like the earlier volume, this one contains rare examples of the earliest extant writings from Sanskrit's classical period. To date, six of the thirty-four stories from the work are still lost to time, but even in its truncated form, the tales, in Khoroche's splendid, fluid renderings, amply illustrate the Buddha's single-minded devotion to the good of all creatures in each of his incarnations. Here we have stories of an actress and a peacock, as noted in the title, but also tales of kings and monkeys, sages and fools, lions and elephants, princes and fairies, in equal measure entertaining, surprising, and moving--in addition to edifying. These unique tales of bravery, romance, sex, death, and, ultimately, rebirth, will be greeted by a very appreciate audience.
