Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the essence of student perception of learning introductory mathematics courses in an online environment at the college level. The central research question was, “What are the lived experiences of students who have completed introductory college mathematics courses in the online learning environment?” The phenomenon described was that of the beliefs and attitudes of the students who participated in introductory mathematics courses on the college level. The ideas explored were if students believe they learn effectively in this environment and how they believe they can best learn. Student beliefs and attitudes about learning online mathematics were defined as student perception. Thus, the central research question addressed the lived experiences of students who have completed introductory college mathematics courses in the online learning environment. The theory guiding this study was Bandura’s social learning theory. The specific part of this theory as it related to the study is that of self-efficacy. Data was obtained through interviews, questionnaires, and focus group discussions. Eleven students who had completed an introductory mathematics course in a college online environment were selected for this study using criterion sampling. Data was coded and emerging themes were identified. The findings of this study show that students who participate in learning introductory mathematics in the online environment in higher education desire the flexibility and convenience of the online schedule but want the connectedness to instructors offered in the traditional setting. The goal of this study was to provide information to college administrators and instructors in order to improve the teaching of introductory college mathematics courses in the online environment.

Book excerpt: Technology has become an important aspect of people's daily activities to the extent that institutions of higher education could not resist the temptation of offering online courses. In the past decade, the number of online courses at colleges has increased tremendously. Mathematics is a subject that is usually associated with negative attitudes, high anxiety, and low achievement among college students. Therefore, online mathematics classes could pose greater challenges for curriculum development and delivery. Barry J. Fraser (1998) defined learning environment as "the social, psychological, and pedagogical contexts in which learning occurs and which affect student achievement and attitudes" (p. 3). This study used a qualitative method to investigate college students' perceptions of these three components of the learning environment in online mathematics classes. The participants had taken at least one online mathematics class prior to the time of interview; none with the researcher. The results revealed students' negative perceptions of all three components of the learning environment in online mathematics classes. The participants expressed concerns about inadequate use of technology, lack of interactions, lack of interpersonal connections, lack of innovative teaching approach and inadequate support for self-learning. The participants' expressed high satisfaction with the flexibility and convenience that the online learning environment offered. This portion of the findings was not surprising, because the results of other studies have also named "convenience and flexibility" as students' most favorite aspect of online classes regardless of the subject. -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: Proficiency in mathematics is essential for success in college, career, and life (Reyna & Brainherd, 2007). As a nation, the United States has struggled for decades to strengthen math achievement and to define proficiency in math (Schoenfeld, 2004). An important but often overlooked component of proficiency is math disposition (Kilpatrick, Swafford, & Findell, 2001; NCTM, 1989). Students who lack a productive math disposition often exhibit lower performance in math, lack academic self-efficacy, suffer from math anxiety, and do not pursue higher levels of mathematics (Boaler, 2014; Bouchey & Harter, 2005; Fennema & Sherman, 1978; Reyes, 1984). The purpose of this sequential, explanatory, mixed methods study was to examine the relationship between classroom learning environment (CLE) and the math disposition of third graders attending public schools in a small, suburban district in the Northeast. The study assessed students’ perceptions of classroom environment and math disposition through a combination of surveys and responsive interviews (Rubin & Rubin, 2011). While interest in the area of learning dispositions has increased, few studies have focused on elementary students in the United States. The following research questions were explored: 1. What is the relationship between classroom learning environment (personalization, participation, independence, investigation and differentiation) and disposition (enjoyment of mathematics and self-efficacy) in mathematics? 2. Is there a significant difference between males and females with respect to disposition in mathematics? 3. Is there a significant difference between males and females with respect to classroom learning environments? 4. To what extent and in what manner is variability in self-efficacy explained by classroom learning environment? 5. How do students describe elements of classroom learning environment that contribute to productive math disposition? This study sought to expand the body of research regarding how CLE relates to math disposition. Significant finding were found relating to personalization, participation, and independence, and four salient themese emerged. Educators may benefit from understanding how these elements of classroom enviroment may relate to productive math disposition (PMD). By improving CLE, more students may delelop PMD, which may lead to more enjoyment of math and greater interest in higher-level mathematics.

As we continue to transition from emergency remote courses to quality online learning experiences, we must respond thoughtfully as well as empirically. The purpose of this study was to examine quality learning experiences as perceived by students in online courses and use the new knowledge generated to add to current research and enhance practice. Through qualitative data collection, I intended to answer the following research questions: (a) What do students perceive as quality learning experiences in their online courses? and (b) How can understanding the student experience and perception of quality in their online learning environments improve course development procedures in online courses? Eight participants were interviewed regarding their experiences of quality in online courses. Results of the study determined Barriers, Interaction, Structure, and Community are the themes that students identify when defining quality online learning experiences. It was also indicated that students were more satisfied with their high quality online learning experiences. Implications and recommendations for improved practice and action steps are also provided. The researcher contends that these findings demonstrate the need to systematically build quality into online courses, which will offer students better learning experiences.

However, the adoption of computer mediated communication in higher education has far outpaced our understanding of how this medium can best be used to promote higher order learning (Garrison, Anderson, & Archer, 2004). Researchers have examined quantitative components of computer mediated communication, but little work has been done to examine the cognitive aspects of online discussion. Those studies that do exist demonstrate inconsistent evidence of higher order learning in online discussions (Kanuka & Anderson, 1998; Littleton & Whitelock, 2005; McLoughlin & Luca, 2000; Meyer, 2003). Researchers conjecture that this could be due to the nature of the tasks that instructors implement for discussion purposes (Arnold & Ducate, 2006; Meyer, 2004; Murphy, 2004; Vonderwell, 2003). This study explored whether one component of instruction, the tasks assigned to students, had an effect on the level of cognitive presence that existed in the mathematical discussions of practicing mathematics teachers enrolled in an online graduate course. Through the method of content analysis, discussion transcripts were analyzed to look for evidence of higher-order learning based on the cognitive presence coding protocol developed by Garrison, Anderson, and Archer (2001). Seventeen students in a History of Mathematics course form the primary sample for this study. The results of the content analysis were triangulated with qualitative data from a questionnaire on student backgrounds and demographics and a post-course survey assessing student perceptions of their learning experiences. The researcher concluded that the MATH 500 course discussions did provide evidence of higher order learning in terms of cognitive presence. Task type, as defined in this study, was not directly related to the levels of cognitive presence achieved in the course. This finding does not negate the possibility of such a relationship, but in this study the effects of task type could not be isolated from other features of the course structure and assignments.

This emphasis has been partly driven by policy, increases in technology resources available, and a need to engage students in their mathematical learning. Most studies on technology integration in mathematics education are focused on teachers' perceptions or students' academic achievement. However, we need to learn how students perceive their learning in this type of environment. This dissertation is a basic qualitative study aimed at understanding the experiences of students with 1:1 computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) in an Algebraic Reasoning classroom. The study used the mathematical software, Desmos, as its CSCL system. The school in which this research took place fully implemented a 1:1 student-to-Chromebook program since 2016, and the participants of this study were students in a 1:1 Algebraic Reasoning classroom. The data used in this study were taken from participants' responses to individual semi-structured interviews about their learning experiences with Desmos. Data was analyzed using Kumar et al.'s (2010) framework for effective CSCL systems which encompasses five criterions: (1) Open-ended and guided interactions, (2) interactions that can be stored centrally for meaningful interpretation, (3) predefined collaboration strategies, (4) underlying theories of collaboration represented in the software, and (5) providing active and passive feedback. Results suggest that students' experiences with 1:1 CSCL in Algebraic Reasoning captured all but one them. These elements can inform educational stakeholders as to how to implement an engaging, innovative, and student-centered 1:1 CSCL mathematics environment."--Boise State University ScholarWorks.

Book excerpt: Understanding web-based course delivery technologies in a world that demands opportunities for continuous learning, flexibility, convenience, and accessibility is increasingly important to higher education. As a result, community colleges must evaluate and assess the effectiveness of web-based course offerings in order to identify how technology impacts learning. This study focused on the overarching question: 'What are the associations between learning styles and students' perceptions of satisfaction among community college students enrolled in web-based learning environments?' To address this question, the researcher used the analysis of association methodology to explore the associations between learning styles and students' perceptions of satisfaction in four community college web-based learning environments. While there is limited empirical research available to determine the appropriateness of measuring student learning styles, the review of literature and the results of this study support that there are differences in the learning styles among community college web-based learners. The review of literature suggested that web-based learning environments should accommodate the various student learning styles in order to increase the performance and satisfaction levels of students enrolled in web-based courses. Furthermore, the literature posited that when there is a mismatch between the web-based environment and the learning style of the student, the student will become inattentive, discouraged, and discontent with the course. However, the results of this study showed that there were limited associations between learning style preferences and students' perceptions of satisfaction in community college web-based courses. The findings from this study only apply to the web-based learning environments and the students enrolled in one or more web-based courses at the four community colleges. Due to lack of empirical evidence, additional research is needed for students.
