Book excerpt: This book serves as a sourcebook to enhance and evaluate safety programs, generate new solutions and interventions, comply with new legislation, and present practical steps and guidelines to establish best practices. It pays particular attention to the factors that may give rise to crime, considering high-risk drinking and examining the intersection between hate crimes and violence. Devoting chapters to discrimination in all its forms, whether against international students, students of color, or on the basis of ethnicity or sexual orientation, it reviews the range of issues relating to harassment and violence against women and engages with hazing and the presence of guns on campus. The authors pay attention to the different circumstances that may apply in specific institutional types, such as community colleges and minority-serving institutions. They offer perspectives from administrators, campus security, student affairs personnel, faculty and policy makers. The purpose is to provide readers with the context and tools to devise a comprehensive safety plan. For administrators operating with few formal support systems, advice is given on how to co-opt individuals and resources from around the campus and the local community to assist in maintaining a safe and welcoming campus.Click here for press release.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of student's perception of safety on their college campus has been a recurring problem. Students have been concerned about their safety on campuses because of the crime and violence that have been occurring on college grounds and in surrounding areas. Some of these crimes include the following: rape, robbery, burglary, dating violence, stalking, sexual assault, and gun violence. Some examples of tragedies that have occurred on college grounds include the Virginia Tech tragedy and the rape of Jeanne Clery at Lehigh University. Lawmakers showed their concern of campus safety by creating and enforcing the Jeanne Clery Act. This research employed the use of a survey and face-to-face semi-structured interviews to determine East Carolina University students' perceptions of safety in campus in relation to crime and violence. The classes where the survey was distributed include ART 1910-Art Appreciation and ITEC 3292-Industrial Safety. The objective of this research work was to identify campus safety issues that were of concern to ECU students as well as students' perceptions of campus security services vis a vis the impact of its presence in the campus. It was understood from the results that students generally believe that ECU is a safe campus. Also, the survey and interview results show that few students use the campus security services. The results also show that females view the campus as less safe when compared to males. Freshmen view the campus as less safe when compared to upperclassmen.

Book excerpt: The nexus of social factors, the college experience, and campus safety research represents an empirical gap in the literature surrounding campus safety issues. There is a need for new and creative outlooks on how to approach this culturally sensitive and complex issue(s); a need this research will begin to fulfill. This study intends to ascertain themes regarding the socially constructed reality of campus safety perceptions and concerns, of both male and female students, at a mid-sized Virginia university. A mixed methods procedure was used which included a focus group interview as well as a survey. As Kelly and Torres (2006) wrote, "The perception, just as much as the actual experience was what shaped women students fear for their campus safety" (p. 28), thus it will be the perceptions of the students that will shape their concerns of campus safety. This study will utilize unmatched count technique as the quantitative data collection method and a social constructivist framework to adapt to the sensitive and personal nature of campus safety issues, including sexual assault and interpersonal violence. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data allowed the researcher to determine that students' perceptions could be categorized and defined in a number of ways. There is a clear need for further research on the subject in order to implement culturally appropriate and effective prevention, response and risk reduction strategies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utilizing a mixed methods design, this research examines the ways in which students' perceptions of safety and danger on the college campus vary and do not vary according to gender through the inclusion of three key components. The first focuses on individual perceptions of safety on campus, along with the ways in which students and other members of the campus community police their behaviors within the university setting to ensure that their personal space is not violated as they navigate to and from classes and campus events. This section relies on data from interviews and focus groups with 24 Mason students and staff, along with data from the observations of two open meetings of the Presidential Task Force during April 2011 which centered on issues regarding campus safety. The second component of this study examines the institutional presentation of safety issues and risks to the university community. This section includes a content analysis of five crime and safety documents released during the 2011-2012 academic year to the campus community from the University Police and administration. The final component consists of a nation-wide assessment of safety on college campuses, relying on the crime and security data from two nationally representative datasets including the Bureau of Justice Statistics' 2004-2005 Survey of Campus Law Enforcement Agencies and the U.S. Department of Education's 2006-2007 Campus Safety and Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool. This study builds on previous research on this topic by investigating the gendered (and not gendered) dimensions of fear, in addition to how such fears may operate to restrict women's participation on the university campus and beyond. Further, this research seeks to inform discussions at colleges and universities about how to make students feel safer as they pursue higher education.

A dynamic environment including regulatory changes and notable criminal incidents has resulted in rapid changes in campus policy in the United States. Limited research has been conducted regarding stakeholder perceptions of campus safety, though research is lacking regarding campus safety in Christian higher education. Research is especially lacking among Christian institutions in the southeastern United States and in comparing student perceptions based on class standing. This causal-comparative study examined the results of a survey presented to undergraduate students at a Christian university to answer the question as to whether there are differences in student perceptions of campus safety based on class standing and gender. The adapted Perceptions of College Safety and Security scale was sent to undergraduate students at a suburban Christian university in upstate South Carolina. The survey results were compared via ANOVA based on class standing and again based on gender. The instrument as a whole showed no significant difference between students based on either gender or class standing, leading to a failure to reject the null hypothesis. Individual questions did show significant differences, leading to further discussion and recommendations for future research. Opportunities for future research including comparing student differences in perceptions of campus safety by comparing differences between students attending various Christian institutions in a variety of setting, comparisons of perceptions based on hometown or geographic region, perceptions of students during the college decision-making process, longitudinal studies, and comparisons of perceptions between different types of stakeholders (e.g. parents and students).

Questions such as, What are some of the dangers of campus life? How can I avoid extensive parking violations? and, How can I best protect myself against campus crime? often go unanswered because they are unpleasant topics, with complicated answers. It is my hope that "The Other Side to Campus Life" will illuminate some of these potential pitfalls of campus life and improve the overall college experience for incoming students.

Book excerpt: This Congressional hearing report covers testimony given to the Subcommittee on Postsecondary Education, Training and Life-Long Learning relating to the issue of crime on college campuses. Specifically the testimony addressed a proposed bill before the House of Representatives, the Open Campus Police Logs Act, which would amend the Higher Education Act of 1965. Testimony also addressed the effectiveness of the existing Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990, which was included as part of the Student Right to Know Campus Security Act, enacted to provide reliable information to parents and students about criminal activity on college campuses. Transcripts are provided of the testimony of witnesses concerning: the effectiveness of the existing law, how the law is being administered by the Department of Education, whether schools and the Department have been abiding by both the spirit and requirements of the law, what suggestions witnesses have for further changes to the law, and views of proposed Open Campus Police Logs Act. Transcripts are included of statements offered by five concerned private individuals, two school administrators, and David Longanecker, Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education. In addition to the oral testimony, prepared statements, letters, and supplementary materials are included in the report. (CH)
