Recently, Covid-19 provided a unique opportunity to study how a pandemic that affected the student experience in academic and non-academic settings. Education transitioned to virtual platforms and online learning experiences replaced traditional in person learning. When educators and students returned to physical buildings, they transitioned into a school year that was different then before the pandemic. This study examined student perspectives of student experiences during the pandemic, focusing on how students believe that the school met their intellectual, social, and emotional. Students shared their perspectives on how the global pandemic affected student experiences and social-emotional development. This study was a phenomenological case study that gathered qualitative data through student focus groups. Utilizing the Collaborative of Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework, this study examined how students developed five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills. Three themes emerged during data analysis: learning environments, opportunities for growth, and supportive relationships. The findings of this study provided implications and suggestions for practitioners and researchers. This includes allowing students to become more active in sharing their perspectives and experiences with researchers and school leaders, providing opportunities for growth in and outside of academic settings, and encouraging the development of interpersonal relationships with peers and adults. The pandemic was a traumatic time for students and educators but this research showed that examining education during this time provided insight into how to improve education for all current and future students.
