Book excerpt: This report presents proposed standards for teaching internship programs. The internship standards are intended to be embedded in a state's teacher licensing system. The year-long (paid) internship is simultaneously the last year of formal teacher preparation, the first year of (supervised) teaching, and one requirement for the unrestricted teaching license. An intern would have to satisfactorily complete the internship before taking the final examination to receive a teaching license. The report is intended to provide guidance to teaching standards boards as well as colleges of education, school districts, and others concerned with improving the practical preparation of teachers. The discussion is presented in four sections: (1) "The Case for a Supervised Teaching Internship"; (2) "Internships in the Licensed Professions"; (3) "Standards for an Internship Program"; and (4) "Implementing the Internship: The Value of Clinical Schools." The appendices provide examples of evaluation forms; an extract from "Minnesota's Vision for Teacher Education: Stronger Standards, New Partnerships"; the Code of Ethics for Minnesota Teachers; and detailed descriptions of internship programs in four licensed professions--engineering, psychology, architecture, and medicine. A bibliography completes the volume. (JD)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classroom management is a topic of enduring concern for teachers, administrators, and the public. It consistently ranks as the first or second most serious educational problem in the eyes of the general public, and beginning teachers consistently rank it as their most pressing concern during their early teaching years. Management problems continue to be a major cause of teacher burnout and job dissatisfaction. Strangely, despite this enduring concern on the part of educators and the public, few researchers have chosen to focus on classroom management or to identify themselves with this critical field. The Handbook of Classroom Management has four primary goals: 1) to clarify the term classroom management; 2) to demonstrate to scholars and practitioners that there is a distinct body of knowledge that directly addresses teachers’ managerial tasks; 3) to bring together disparate lines of research and encourage conversations across different areas of inquiry; and 4) to promote a vigorous agenda for future research in this area. To this end, 47 chapters have been organized into 10 sections, each chapter written by a recognized expert in that area. Cutting across the sections and chapters are the following themes: *First, positive teacher-student relationships are seen as the very core of effective classroom management. *Second, classroom management is viewed as a social and moral curriculum. *Third, external reward and punishment strategies are not seen as optimal for promoting academic and social-emotional growth and self-regulated behavior. *Fourth, to create orderly, productive environments teachers must take into account student characteristics such as age, developmental level, race, ethnicity, cultural background, socioeconomic status, and ableness. Like other research handbooks, the Handbook of Classroom Management provides an indispensable reference volume for scholars, teacher educators, in-service practitioners, and the academic libraries serving these audiences. It is also appropriate for graduate courses wholly or partly devoted to the study of classroom management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educators and employers are increasingly concerned that too many young people do not have the skills needed to succeed as they enter the world of work and higher education. A well-structured, robust internship can help students build those critical work and life skills. Under the protective umbrella of their school students are able to explore and test out potential careers, develop real life, transferrable skills, apply their knowledge in the real world, strengthen relationships with adults and gain a clearer vision of career and educational opportunities. Until now, not much has been available to guide the internship development process. This book is a resource providing the tools needed to develop a quality internship program — linking classroom learning to the real world. The authors describe practical, field-tested practices, implementation guidelines developed through research, best practices, and all other elements necessary for a quality internship program in high schools and community colleges, from start-up to sustainability. Internships for Today's World is for all those who are concerned today’s young people need a way to develop the skills that will help them succeed in the future.

Book excerpt: This volume offers a cross-national analysis of teacher education programs designed to prepare teachers for work in middle level schools. The book showcases 15 detailed case studies of courses at institutions across North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa—including from countries currently underrepresented in middle level literature—which provide detailed information on programming whilst foregrounding the political, social, and cultural factors which have influenced priorities within teacher education. Underpinning the book is a comparative case study framework, used to identify divergences and commonalities within and across nations whereby factors such as globalization, policy, and socio-cultural views of teaching and adolescence are explored as determinants of the nature, success, and challenges of middle level teacher preparation. This text will benefit scholars, academics, and students in the fields of middle level education, teacher education, and international and comparative education. Those involved with educational policy and politics, as well as teacher training and the sociology of education more broadly, will also benefit from this volume.
