In spite of this, there is a paucity of research on student perceptions of co-teaching. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate student perceptions of co-teaching in a high school biology classroom. Over nine weeks, data was collected from students in a co-taught and traditional classroom through observations and focus groups. Qualitative content analysis identified three themes and eight categories which highlight student perceptions of co-teaching. Themes and categories that emerged were: 1) Environment which included the categories of availability of help, students feeling supported and normalcy of the classroom, 2) Instruction which included student engagement, lesson activity and teacher(s) role(s) and, 3) Relationships which included relationships between teacher(s) and student(s) and parity between teachers. Information from the study deepens researchers' and practitioners' understanding of how students perceive co-teaching and provide new avenues for future research and best practices.

This study sought to determine if students preferred to receive instruction in a co-taught classroom and in what ways they felt most supported. The survey data indicated that students in grades seven and eight at a charter school in San Diego overwhelmingly preferred the co-taught classroom over a traditional classroom and that they felt supported by the model. The research indicates that schools should continue to use coteaching models to provide special education services in the least restrictive environment. More research is needed to determine more precisely how teachers can best support all students. Another area for further study is examining how teacher relationships are viewed by students and if challenges faced by co-teachers affect the students in their classrooms.

This study employed a quantitative approach to ascertain the perceptions of both students and teachers of the five most commonly used co-teaching models (i.e., One Teach/One Assist, Station Teaching, Alternative Teaching, Parallel Teaching, and Team Teaching). Additionally, using an analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures for statistical analysis, this study compared student responses to teacher responses to ascertain the presence of both main effects and interactions. It was found that differences in student and teacher perceptions regarding the five co-teaching models existed in specific categories and that student and teacher perceptions of the different co-teaching models were largely contradictory in specific areas.

Recently there has been emphasis on co-teaching as a method to comply with this mandate. Co-teaching is a technique geared at utilizing a special education teacher and a content area teacher to concurrently instruct both students with and without disabilities in the general education setting. It is well established in the literature that it is vital that together both the content area teacher and special education teacher in these settings be effectively trained to meet the needs of the students with disabilities without hindering the progress of the students without disabilities (Fleming & Bauer, 2007; Goor, 1994; Dieker, & Murawski, 2003). This study investigated the perceptions of special education and content area teachers with and without experience co-teaching of co-teaching. Twenty-two content area and fifteen special education teachers with and without co-teaching experience and currently enrolled (academic year of 2012-2013) in the graduate course of ED530 Teacher as a Researcher at Bridgewater State University responded to an 82-item survey to identify their experience and perspectives on co-teaching. Results of this study identified several features of content area and special education teachers' experience and views of co-teaching. Recommendations are offered for future research in the area of co-teaching and co-teaching professional development.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions each stakeholder had toward the co-taught classroom. this study first explored the perceptions of the regular education teacher (mate teacher), co-teacher (special education teacher), and students' before any co-teaching strategies were introduced into the classroom using pre-surveys. Then the co-teachers incorporated three co-teaching strategies consisting of one teach and one assist, team teaching, an station teaching into a mathematics classroom over nine weeks. Students completed surveys again in the middle and upon completion of the study to determine whether their perceptions of the co-taught classroom imporved. Co-teacher surveys along with journaling related to classroom instruction measured co-teachers' perceptions throughout the study as well as ideas for continued improvement. Student perceptions toward the co-teachers increased in many areas including their likelihood to try harder and willingness to ask either co-teacher for assistance on assignments. Students repsonded best in the co-taught classroom to the one teach and one assist model. Co-teachers acknowledged the classroom felt more shared between classroom instruction, discipline, and grading practice. Collaboration was a consistent theme between co-teachers, and further developmetn of the co-teaching strategies was recommended.

This study was conducted to examine the academic and social benefits of co-teaching for students with special needs. The researcher examined what teachers perceive co-teaching to be and how those teachers are implementing the model based on their personal beliefs. Participants in this study included four teachers, two general education and two special education teachers, with an average of 11.25 years of total teaching experience. Data was collected from surveys, observations, and a review of attendance records and discipline referrals. WESTEST results were also examined to see if the effectiveness of the co-teaching method concerning student achievement in the content areas of reading and math. This study found that from an academic standpoint, special needs students can successfully retain content material from participating in the co-taught classroom, particularly in the subjects of math and reading. Socially, the researcher found that the attendance and behavior of special needs students did improve as well. Based on this studies results, co-teaching appears to be an effective instructional option for meeting the social and academic needs of students with disabilities.

In this mixed-methods study, general education math and English teachers and special education teachers in three suburban high schools were given a survey to provide input regarding co-teaching practices in their school/district. The survey results were analyzed to determine trends of variables relating to teacher perceptions. Additionally, interviews with four administrators (three schools and one district) were conducted to correlate expectations, strengths and weaknesses, and training with the results of the teacher survey. Multiple themes emerged, which included collaboration/planning, administrative support, volunteer/willingness, training/professional development, and relationship/trust. The results of the study showed teacher preparation programs were not consistent in providing a foundation on teaching students with disabilities, and there are weaknesses in professional development for successful co-teaching practices. Analyses of both survey and interview data provide insight into co-teaching in math and English classrooms and identify possible implications for the district’s co-teaching practices.
