Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have been written on the evils of commercialism in college sport, and the hypocrisy of payments to athletes from alumni and other sources outside the university. Almost no attention, however, has been given to the way that the National Collegiate Athletic Association has embraced professionalism through its athletic scholarship policy. Because of this gap in the historical record, the NCAA is often cast as an embattled defender of amateurism, rather than as the architect of a nationwide money-laundering scheme. Sack and Staurowsky show that the NCAA formally abandoned amateurism in the 1950s and passed rules in subsequent years that literally transformed scholarship athletes into university employees. In addition, by purposefully fashioning an amateur mythology to mask the reality of this employer-employee relationship, the NCAA has done a disservice to student-athletes and to higher education. A major subtheme is that women, such as those who created the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), opposed this hypocrisy, but lacked the power to sustain an alternative model. After tracing the evolution of college athletes into professional entertainers, and the harmful effects it has caused, the authors propose an alternative approach that places college sport on a firm educational foundation and defend the rights of both male and female college athletes. This is a provocative analysis for anyone interested in college sports in America and its subversion of traditional educational and amateur principles.

While all college students must learn to negotiate the complex transition from high school to college, student athletes face unique challenges, including the complicated set of regulations set out by the NCAA and individual conferences that determine eligibility. The current environment in college athletics makes it even more critical that student athletes understand what they need to do academically and how to avoid potential situations that could jeopardize their athletic careers. College Knowledge for the Student Athlete is a road map and tour guide for a successful career as a student athlete. Tips are based on research and the authors’ experience, as well as the wisdom and advice of hundreds of former student athletes.

Book excerpt: This book is written for student athletes, their parents, mentors, families and supporters, for coaches, and Athletic Directors. It has ideas and insights for anyone who is trying to choose a college, or a career. It's for everyone interested in sports at the high school or college level -- but especially with those who parent, coach, or guide student athletes as they make some of the most important decisions of their lives. Behind every teen student athlete is an exhausted parent! The book is about the process of a high school athlete preparing to compete at the college level, written by someone who knows that journey very well. Over the years, I've discussed many aspects of this process, with other athletes and with teenagers, with their parents, coaches and Athletic Directors. Many people have found my insights helpful and have urged me to write a book. This is that book.Parents and coaches who read the book will have a catalyst for rich dialogue with their student athlete, about recognizing core values, setting priorities, and enhancing decision-making. Let me lay out two core values right here. The first is that you must believe in yourself; that's where this book starts because that's where success starts. Athletes, believe in yourselves. Parents, believe in your children, and in their ability to make good decisions about the college which best fits their needs.Second, always strive for excellence. Nothing is guaranteed to you but if you find a task or a sport which inherently interests you; if you work hard, stay focused, find good mentors and listen to them, you will vastly improve your chances of success. If your core values serve as a platform for developing good work habits, you'll get the most out of your abilities in sports and in life. That is all that anyone can ask of you, and all you should ever ask of yourself.

Book excerpt: Elevating Your Potential is an inspiring, informative book designed to teach student athletes how to find the bigger purpose behind their sport and to equip them to succeed in college and beyond. Attending practices and competitions. Pursuing a degree. Living on your own. Preparing for the future. Once you enter college, you'll quickly realize that if you don't find a way to manage your student-athlete balance, you'll get burned out and something will fall behind. How do you prepare for this transition? Jeremiah Gaines, M. Ed, takes his combined experience as a Division 1 athlete and college educator to break down the different components of a college athlete's career and push student athletes to work for the bigger picture of college athletics. In this book, Gaines will discuss: the recruitment and application process, scholarships and choosing your school, money management on a college budget, the need to balance athletics with academics, how to be the best teammate on and off the field, and gathering the resources needed to succeed beyond college. No matter your chosen sport or future plans either in the world of business or as a professional athlete, college is meant to be a stepping stone to that future. With a thorough game plan on how to best prepare, communicate, and execute, you'll enter the college arena with a fast start and strong finish. A coach once told Gaines, "Most of the time, student athletes put all of their efforts into getting the chance to 'make it, ' but then once they're actually there, they're not prepared for it. Then the opportunity is gone before they even realize what happened." That's not going to be your story. You're not just going to make it-you're going to elevate above the competition and thrive.
