In 1981, Jaeger made the following conjecture concerning odd-cycle critical graphs: every planar graph of girth at least $4t$ admits a homomorphism to $C_{2t+1}$ (or equivalently, has a $\tfrac{2t+1}{t}$-circular colouring). The best known result for the $t=3$ case states that every planar graph of girth at least 18 has a homomorphism to $C_7$. We improve upon this result, showing that every planar graph of girth at least 16 admits a homomorphism to $C_7$. This is obtained from a more general result regarding the density of $C_7$-critical graphs. Our main result is that if $G$ is a $C_7$-critical graph with $G \not \in \{C_3, C_5\}$, then $e(G) \geq \tfrac{17v(G)-2}{15}$. Additionally, we prove several structural lemmas concerning graphs that are $H$-critical, when $H$ is a vertex-transitive non-bipartite graph.

Our expressibility results deal with structural properties of graph homomorphisms and their relation to different graph parameters. Our computational complexity results concern exact counting problems. For various such problems complexity dichotomies have been proved. A typical dichotomy statement is that a problem is either in polynomial time or #P-hard depending on certain conditions. In the expressibilty part, we first obtain a criterion for a graph parameter to be expressible as a partition function of graph homomorphisms over an arbitrary field, generalizing the result from [27]. In order to achieve this, we introduce the notion of a connection tensor extending that of a connection matrix in [27]. We also deal with expressibility aspects of different graph parameters. In particular, using our criterion we show the inexpressiblity of perfect matchings and edge colorings as a graph homomorphism problem. Next, we show that two graphs with arbitrary vertex and edge weights cannot define the same partition function of graph homomorphisms unless they are isomorphic. This result is a direct generalization of [45, 46, 56]. After that, we inquire into the complexity of counting graph homomorphisms. By introducing some novel combinatorial constructions and interpolation techniques, we generalize the Bulatov-Grohe dichotomy [5] for nonnegative edge weights, i.e., the #P-hardness part thereof, to bounded degree (and simple) graphs. Further, by employing more techniques and considerably more work, primarily of an algebraic nature, we show how to extend the more general complexity dichotomy by Cai, Chen and Lu [8] for complex edge weights to bounded degree (and simple) graphs and also how to do it constructively. We first achieve an extension for bounded degree graphs, and then make a transition to bounded degree simple graphs. Besides, some of our expressibility results play a crucial role for the transition to bounded degree simple graphs and the construcitivity of our dichotomy. This all serves as a unifying component in this work.
