This book was released on 1996-07-25 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probably the best record of the conference available now or in the future, because financial constraints prevented the UN Secretariat from issuing summary verbatim records. The conference was called for at the 1992 environmental conference in Rio to address problems arising from fishing fleets traveling far from depleted fisheries near home in pursuit of fish, and the increasing adoption of 200-mile economic zones by countries. Includes selected documents from the six sessions between April 1993 and August 1995, the agreement for the implementation of the provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 relating to the conservation and management of straddling and highly migratory fish stocks, the final act of the conference, a list of documents, and a subject index. Book Synopsis Maritime Boundary Disputes, Settlement Processes, and the Law of the Sea by : Jon M. van Dyke
Download or read book Maritime Boundary Disputes, Settlement Processes, and the Law of the Sea written by Jon M. van Dyke and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-03-16 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A surprising number of maritime boundaries remain unresolved, and a range of reasons can be cited to explain why the process of delimiting these boundaries has been so slow. This volume addresses and analyzes some of these reasons, focusing on some of the volatile disputes in Northeast Asia and in North America. Scholars from Asia, the United States, and Europe grapple with festering controversies and apply insights gained from resolved disputes to those that remain unresolved. Islands continue to haunt this process, and the way in which they should affect maritime boundaries remains in dispute. The United States has a number of disputed boundaries with its neighbors to the north and south, and these are examined. Antarctica is a concern of all nations, and the regimes governing the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica are analyzed. The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea was created to allow countries to resolve their disputes peacefully, and two chapters look at how this new court is operating. The impact of sea-level rise on maritime boundaries is given special attention in the opening chapter. This volume presents a wonderful collection of provocative chapters written by the top scholars in the field of International Ocean Law. It should help scholars, students, and decision makers to understand the current state of this field and to move some of the difficult disputes toward resolution.
Book Synopsis Making the Law of the Sea by : James Harrison
Download or read book Making the Law of the Sea written by James Harrison and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-14 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The law of the sea is an important area of international law which must be able to adapt to the changing needs of the international community. Making the Law of the Sea examines how various international organizations have contributed to the development of this law and what kinds of instruments and law-making techniques have been used. Each chapter considers a different international institution - including the International Maritime Organization and the United Nations - and analyses its functions and powers. Important questions are posed about the law-making process, including what actors are involved and what procedures are followed. Potential problems for the development of the law of the sea are considered and solutions are proposed. In particular, James Harrison explores and evaluates the current methods employed by international institutions to coordinate their law-making activities in order to overcome fragmentation of the law-making process.

Book Synopsis Guidelines for the Routine Collection of Capture Fishery Data by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Guidelines for the Routine Collection of Capture Fishery Data written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These guidelines aim to help those who design routine data collection programmes, focusing on the relationship between typical questions asked by policy-makers and managers, and the data required for providing reliable answers. Fisheries policy and management objectives, particularly under the precautionary approach, need to be based upon analyses of reliable data. Data are needed to make rational decisions, evaluate the fisheries performance in relation to management activities and fulfil regional requirements. These objectives are achieved using fishery performance indicators. Indicators are used to measure the state of the resource, the performance of fishing controls, economic efficiency, socio-economic performance and social continuity. The primary factor in choosing what data to collect is the link between the necessary operational, biological, economic and socio-cultural indicators and their associated variables. The way in which different data variables are collected needs tobe tailored to the structure of the fishery. The strategy will be strongly influenced by the budget and personnel available, and the degree to which fishers and others co-operate. The programme must identify which variables should be collected through complete enumeration and which can be sampled. Collection methods are influenced by the variable itself, the strategy, collection point and the skill of the enumerator. Once collected, fishery data must be stored securely, but made easily available for analysis, which is achieved through a computer-based data management system, following the basic data processing principles. The implementation of a data collection programme should follow a normal project cycle, developing a new legal and institutional framework as appropriate"--Abstract.

Progress is now evident in the implementation of Chapter 17 of Agenda 21, as reviewed by the 1997 UNGA Special Session. These developments and the establishment of the International Seabed Authority (ISBA) and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) make the continuation of the NILOS Documentary Yearbook, now in its 11th year, of particular significance in the years to come. The Yearbook compiles the documents related to ocean affairs and the law of the sea issued each year by organizations, organs, and bodies of the United Nations system. These include documents of the U.N. General Assembly, ECOSOC and its regional Commissions, the U.N. Secretary-General's Informal Consultations, PrepCom ISA/ITLOS, UNCED, UNEP and UNCTAD; followed by the documents of specialized agencies and other autonomous organizations of the U.N. system, including FAO, IAEA, ILO, IMO, UNESCO/IOC and WMO. The Yearbook reproduces in full documents issued in the course of the most recent year and lists other relevant documents. The NILOS Documentary Yearbook has proved of invaluable assistance in facilitating access by the community of scholars and practitioners in ocean affairs and the law of the sea to essential documentation.

Download or read book Report of the Meeting of FAO and Non-FAO Regional Fishery Bodies Or Arrangements, Rome, Italy, 11-12 February 1999 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Meeting of FAO and non-FAO Regional Fishery Bodies or Arrangements discussed three main items: major issues affecting the performance of regional fishery bodies (RFB); a multifaceted approach to fishery status and trends reporting; and regional fishery bodies as vehicles for good fishery governance. The meeting reached a number of conclusions regarding matters meriting the attention of RFBs, governments and FAO. It stressed the importance of the precautionary approach for fisheries management and governance and of involving all stakeholders in developing management measures, and urged to continue to adapt their mandates, structures and policies in order to respond better to the challenges facing world fisheries. It expressed its concern over the problems arising from over-capacity in fisheries and the lack of sufficient progress in improving the monitoring and enforcement of management measures. The participants expressed their appreciation at the opportunity afforded by the meeting to share experiences and view upon often common problems and recommended that further such meetings should be held regularly, with FAO as focal point, preferably prior to future sessions of the FAO Committee on Fisheries.--Publisher's description.
