Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Magnetism and Structure in Systems of Reduced Dimension", held at l'Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques de Cargese - U.M.S. - C.N.R.S. - Universite de Corte Universite de Nice Sophia - Antipolis during June 15-19, 1992. The ordering of papers in the volume reflects the sequence of papers presented at the workshop. The aim was not to segregate the papers into rigidly defmed areas but to group the papers into small clusters, each cluster having a common theme. In this way the parallel, rather than serial, development of areas such as preparation of films, magnetic and structural characterization was highlighted. Indeed the success of the field depends on such parallel development and is assisted by workshops of this nature and the international collaborations which they foster. The organizers and participants of the NATO workshop express their thanks to Mme. Marie-France Hanseier and the staff at l'Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques de Cargese U.M.S. - C.N.R.S. - Universite de Corte - Universite de Nice Sophia - Antipolis for making the workshop and local arrangements a memorable success. Warm thanks are also expressed to Varadachari Sadagopan and Pascal Stefanou for their encouragement and help in making the workshop a reality. We are also grateful to Kristl Hathaway, Larry Cooper and Gary Prinz for advice in developing the workshop program.

Book excerpt: Total energy calculations based on density functional theory are generally a good approach to obtain the properties of solids. The local density approximation (LDA) is widely used for calculating the ground state properties of electronic systems; for excited states the errors are in general unknown. The important aspects of LDA pertain to the modeling of the exchange-correlation interaction. If the exchange-correlation potential is approximately the same for the ground and excited states, one expects good results from the LDA calculations for excited states. In this thesis, we utilize the total energy technique for numerical computations of the electronic structure of iron in several magnetic phases and crystalline structures. 1. Body-centered-cubic iron in the ferromagnetic and several antiferromagnetic configurations. We use the total energy results to obtain the parameters in a model Heisenberg Hamiltonian. These include the interaction parameters up to 6-th nearest neighbors. Based on this model Hamiltonian we calculate properties such as the critical (Curie) temperature and spin stiffness constant. We assume that the total exchangecorrelation energy functional is the same in the ferromagnetic ground state and the antiferromagnetic excited states. Our model parameters are based directly on ab initio calculations of the electronic structure. Our calculation yields good results compared with experimental values and earlier work. Some other physical quantities, related to the phase transition, and spin waves are also discussed. 2. Face-centered-tetragonal iron. If iron is grown on a proper substrate (e.g., Cu(100)), the crystal structure of the thin film displays a face-centered-tetragonal distortion due to the lattice constant misfit between the film and substrate. Therefore, we performed calculations for fct iron in its ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and nonmagnetic phases for a wide range of values of the lattice parameters. In the ferromagnetic calculations, we found two minima in the total energy: one is close to.the bcc structure and the other (with a lower energy) is close to fcc. In the antiferromagnetic and nonmagnetic calculations, we found in each case that there is only one minimum near the fcc structure, providing us clear evidence that the antiferromagnetic and nonmagnetic states are (meta)stable near the fcc region and unstable in bcc region. The antiferromagnetic and nonmagnetic states are almost degenerate near the fcc minimum, but the antiferromagnetic phase has the lowest total energy in the whole fct region. Magnetic moments are also calculated for a variety of fct structures. Near the fcc minimum we found that two ferromagnetic phases co-exist, one with a low spin and one with a high spin. These results are consistent with experimental facts and other earlier calculations. Some structural properties, such as the elastic constants and the bulk modulus, are also studied and compared with experimental data and some earlier calculations.

Book excerpt: High symmetry and low coordinated single-ion lanthanides have been a successful recipe to design high performance single molecule magnets (SMMs). However, enhancement of the magnetic properties of polymetallic SMMs is an important challenge. Therefore, this thesis describes the use of redox non-innocent tetrazine-based ligands and d- and f- elements in order to fine-tune the electronic structure of the resulting compounds to promote strong exchange interactions between the spin carriers. As reported in the literature, radical-bridged ligands represent a potential strategy to improve the magnetic properties of polymetallic SMMs. Thus, chapter one introduces principal concepts that govern the physical properties of metal complexes containing radical-bridged ligands. Chapter two describes the magnetic properties of a unique air-stable tetratopic radical- bridged bpymtz·− (3,6-bis(2-pyrimidyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine) templating four Ni(II) metal ions. The dc magnetic studies along with DFT calculations reveal strong ferromagnetic exchange coupling between the Ni- bpymtz·− of J = 98 cm-1 with a spin ground state of S = 9/2. Chapter three describes the application of another tetrazine-based ligand, bpytz (3,6- bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine) to probe magnetic exchange interactions in a {CoII4} supramolecular square. The modelling of dc susceptibility data shows significant Co(II) - bpytz·− magnetic coupling of J = - 118 cm-1 for a spin ground state ST = 4. While the non-reduced analog displays weak Co(II)-Co(II) exchange of J = - 0.64 cm-1 (S = 0 ground state). Additionally, the radical-radical magnetic exchange contribution was probed with an analogous {ZnII4} square, where a J = -15.9 cm-1 was found. Chapter four extends the application of reduced tetrazine ligands to lanthanide systems. Here we demonstrate that the systematic reduction of the ligand with cobaltacene (CoCp2) led to the formation of a strongly coupled bpytz·−-bpytz·− bridging ligand. Magnetic measurements combined with ab initio calculations confirm unprecedented intramolecular pi-dimerization preventing strong magnetic Dy(III)-bpytz·− communication. Chapter five describes the synthesis and characterization of {LnIII4} (Ln = Dy, Gd and Lu) where the Ln(III) ions are bridged by peripheral bpytz·−. The oxophilicity and high coordination numbers preferred by lanthanides ions lead to the formation of a cubane core made up of metal ions bridged by hydroxy ligands (M3-OH-). Experimental and computational studies were applied to verify the nature and strength of the magnetic interactions between the spin carriers.

Book excerpt: In recent years interlayer exchange coupling and giant magnetoresistance (GMR) in transition metal ferromagnet/nonmagnetic multilayers have been extensively studied. Bilinear interlayer exchange favors the collinear alignment of the magnetization of adjacent ferromagnetic layers, oscillates with the thickness of the non-magnetic spacer layer, and has been observed in a large number of magnetic multilayer and trilayer systems. Biquadratic exchange favors the perpendicular alignment of the magnetization of adjacent ferromagnetic layers and has been observed in several magnetic multilayer and trilayer systems. Unlike bilinear exchange, the origins of biquadratic exchange are uncertain. Generally, biquadratic exchange is significantly weaker than bilinear exchange. The connection between the magnetic configuration, which is determined by the interlayer coupling, and the magnetoresistance is well established. The GMR effect occurs when the antiferromagnetically aligned moments of alternating magnetic layers are brought into alignment by an external magnetic field. This causes a dramatic drop in the electrical resistance. Much of the interest in magnetic multilayers stems from the many possible applications of the GMR effect. This work is a study of biquadratic coupling and its effects on the magnetic phase diagram and giant magnetoresistance of sputter grown single crystal NiFe/Cu multilayers. It is often difficult to determine the bilinear and biquadratic coupling strengths separately, particularly in samples with pinhole defects in the spacer layers, because the zero field configuration of the moments is not easily determined. However, I will show that under certain conditions biquadratic coupling can lead to configurations in which the net magnetization of the coupled magnetic moments is not aligned parallel to the applied magnetic field. In samples with magnetocrystalline anisotropy, these asymmetric configurations lead to a novel minimum in the GMR at low fields when the field is applied along the hard axis of magnetization. In such cases, the bilinear and biquadratic coupling strengths can be determined from resistance measurements only. In this work the magnetic phase diagram is calculated for a two layer system with bilinear coupling, biquadratic coupling and magnetocrystalline anisotropy. New asymmetric configurations, some of which cannot be determined analytically, are found. Numerical simulations confirm the contribution of these configurations to the GMR and the accuracy of the interlayer coupling strengths extracted from the magnetoresistance data. These measurements indicate that the biquadratic coupling can be considerably stronger than predicted theoretically. The data are found to be inconsistent with the intrinsic, loose spin, dipole field, and fluctuation models of biquadratic coupling. To explain the data I propose a new model in which ferromagnetic coupling through pinholes in the spacer layer, combined with the antiferromagnetic bilinear coupling, frustrates the magnetic layers and leads to orthogonal coupling. Unlike the fluctuation model, the pinhole-frustration model allows for very strong biquadratic coupling. Although the pinhole mechanism can lead to biquadratic coupling, closer analysis reveals that the bilinear-biquadratic formalism may break down for strong frustration.

Book excerpt: This book represents Volume 2 in a series on the use of Mossbauer spectroscopy in the study of magnetism and materials. However, the perceptive reader will notice some differences from Volume 1. Specifically, in order to market the book at a more affordable price for most universities and research laboratories, the book has been prepared in camera ready format The editors and the authors agreed to do this because there is a demand for such a book in the Mossbauer community. This format has placed an extra burden on the editors and the authors and we hope we have overcome all the difficulties generated by the transfer of files between different computers. In order to make the book more attractive to materials scientists who are not experts in Mossbauer spectroscopy, this volume is particularly oriented towards the study of materials by Mossbauer spectroscopy and related complementary techniques, such as neutron scattering and a variety of surface scattering techniques. The authors of this volume can be proud of the high quality professional effort they have devoted to clearly presenting their specific topics. As a result we very much enjoyed working with the authors on this volume. We hope that their effort will help to educate the next generation of Mossbauer effect spectroscopists, a generation which will face the challenge of maintaining equally high scientific and professional standards in their research work.
