Book Synopsis Protein Structure-Function Relationships in Foods by : Rickey Y. Yada
Download or read book Protein Structure-Function Relationships in Foods written by Rickey Y. Yada and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food proteins constitute a diverse and complex collection of biological macro molecules. Although contributing to the nutritional quality of the foods we con sume, proteins also act as integral components by virtue of their diverse functional properties. The expression of these functional properties during the preparation, processing and storage of foods is largely dictated by changes to the structure or structure-related properties of the proteins involved. Therefore, germane to the optimal use of existing and future food protein sources is a thorough understanding of the nature of the relationships between structure and function. It is the goal of this book to aid in better defining these relationships. Two distinct sections are apparent: firstly, those chapters which address struc ture-function relationships using a variety of food systems as examples to demonstrate the intricacies of this relationship, and secondly, those chapters which discuss techniques used to either examine structural parameters or aid in establishing quantitative relationships between protein structure and function. The editors would like to thank all contributors for their assistance, co-operation and, above all, their patience in putting this volume together, and the following companies/organizations for their financial support without which it would not have been the success it was: Ault Foods Limited, Best Foods Canada Limited, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Quest International Canada Inc., and University of Guelph. Book Synopsis The Proteins Composition, Structure, and Function V1 by : Hans Neurath
Download or read book The Proteins Composition, Structure, and Function V1 written by Hans Neurath and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Proteins: Composition, Structure, and Function, Second Edition, Volume I explores the quantitative relationships between protein composition, structure, and function. This book is composed of six chapters that cover the rapid and fundamental advances in understanding protein chemistry. This book outlines first the quantitative procedures and various methods suitable for the determination of amino acids found as constituents of naturally occurring peptides and as free amino acids in tissues and body fluids. These topics are followed by a discussion on some of the aspects of peptide chemistry, which appear significant in relation to peptides possessing physiological activity. The next chapter considers protein synthesis that represents the sequences of chemical reactions whereby amino acids are assembled in biological systems to produce proteins. This volume also examines the correlation of structure with function; the mechanisms of control of protein biosynthesis; the exact role of intramolecular interactions in the determination of tertiary structure; and the colinearity of genetic “maps with amino acid sequences. A chapter describes the methods of analysis and reactions of sulfhydryl, disulfide, and thiol ester groups in proteins, as well as the evidence relating to the functions of these sulfur groups in proteins. The final chapter looks into the models and theories for the noncovalent bond interactions in proteins. This book is of value to organic chemists, biochemists, and researchers in the protein-related fields.

Book Synopsis Concepts of Biology by : Samantha Fowler
Download or read book Concepts of Biology written by Samantha Fowler and published by . This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concepts of Biology is designed for the single-semester introduction to biology course for non-science majors, which for many students is their only college-level science course. As such, this course represents an important opportunity for students to develop the necessary knowledge, tools, and skills to make informed decisions as they continue with their lives. Rather than being mired down with facts and vocabulary, the typical non-science major student needs information presented in a way that is easy to read and understand. Even more importantly, the content should be meaningful. Students do much better when they understand why biology is relevant to their everyday lives. For these reasons, Concepts of Biology is grounded on an evolutionary basis and includes exciting features that highlight careers in the biological sciences and everyday applications of the concepts at hand.We also strive to show the interconnectedness of topics within this extremely broad discipline. In order to meet the needs of today's instructors and students, we maintain the overall organization and coverage found in most syllabi for this course. A strength of Concepts of Biology is that instructors can customize the book, adapting it to the approach that works best in their classroom. Concepts of Biology also includes an innovative art program that incorporates critical thinking and clicker questions to help students understand--and apply--key concepts.
Book Synopsis Structural and Functional Relationships in Prokaryotes by : Larry L. Barton
Download or read book Structural and Functional Relationships in Prokaryotes written by Larry L. Barton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-11-24 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several decades, bacteria have served as model systems to describe the life p- cesses of growth and metabolism. In addition, it is well recognized that prokaryotes have contributed greatly to the many advances in the areas of ecology, evolution, and biotechnology. This understanding of microorganisms is based on studies of members from both theBacteria andArchaea domains. With each issue of the various scienti?c publications, new characteristics of prokaryotic cells are being reported and it is - portant to place these insights in the context of the appropriate physiological processes. Structural and Functional Relationships in Prokaryotes describes the fundamental physiological processes for members of the Archaea and Bacteria domains. The - ganization of the book re?ects the emphasis that I have used in my 30 years of teaching a course of bacterial physiology. The philosophy used in the preparation of this book is to focus on the fundamental features of prokaryotic physiology and to use these features as the basis for comparative physiology. Even though diverse phenotypes have evolved from myriad genetic possibilities, these prokaryotes display considerable functional similarity and support the premise that there is a unity of physiology in the prokaryotes. The variations observed in the chemical structures and biochemical p- cesses are important in contributing to the persistence of microbial strains in a speci?c environment.
