Book excerpt: This thesis presents several new insights into the behaviour and properties of solid organic inclusion compounds and explores some of the potential applications of these properties. The thesis considers the structural properties, X-ray birefringence and crystal growth of urea and thiourea inclusion compounds. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to organic solid inclusion compounds, surveying the physico-chemical properties and applications of urea and thiourea inclusion compounds. In Chapter 2, the basic theory of the experimental techniques utilized in this thesis is introduced. These techniques include single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, Raman microspectrometry and differential scanning calorimetry. Chapter 3 presents a novel strategy for retrospectively mapping the growth history of a crystal. The new experimental strategy allows insights to be gained on the evolution of crystal growth processes by analysis of crystals recovered at the end of crystallization. The feasibility of the strategy is demonstrated by considering the crystal growth of a urea inclusion compound containing a binary mixture of guest molecules. After the crystal has finished growing, the composition of the crystal is determined using confocal Raman microspectrometry, and is interpreted to yield insights into the growth history of the crystal. In Chapter 4, new insights into the phase transition behaviour of thiourea inclusion compounds are established. The structural properties of the bromocyclohexane/thiourea inclusion compound are determined using both single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction over a range of temperatures above and below a first-order phase transition. The results demonstrate marked contrasts to the phase transition behaviour in the prototypical cyclohexane/thiourea inclusion compound, demonstrating that relatively small changes in molecular geometry (in this case bromine substitution) can have a profound influence on the structural properties of the low-temperature phase in such materials. This observation reflects the fine energetic balances that pertain in such materials and the role of small and subtle changes in intermolecular interactions involving the host and guest components. Chapter 5 reports the first definitive demonstration of the phenomenon of X-ray birefringence, reporting a material that exhibits essentially ideal birefringence behaviour at X-ray energies near the Br K-edge. The designed material, the 1-bromoadamantane/thiourea inclusion compound gives experimental behaviour in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions for the dependence of transmitted X-ray intensity on both X-ray energy and crystal orientation. The results vindicate the potential to exploit this phenomenon to establish a detailed understanding of molecular polarization, particularly as an experimental strategy to determine the orientational distributions of specific bonds in solids, for example, in the case of partially ordered materials or materials that undergo order-disorder phase transitions. Building upon the fundamentally important observations of Chapter 5, Chapter 6 demonstrates that measurements of X-ray birefringence can be used to characterise changes in molecular polarization and bond orientation in an anisotropic material. For the bromocyclohexane/thiourea inclusion compound, measurements of X-ray birefringence are used to determine the changes in the orientational distribution of the C-Br bonds of the guest molecules, associated with an order-disorder phase transition in this material. Best-fits to simulated data based on a structural model were performed, allowing quantitative structural information on the guest molecules to be established. The structural properties determined from X-ray birefringence correlate exquisitely with those obtained independently from diffraction data, demonstrating the validity of the structural model and the reliability of this novel experimental technique. These observations represent the basis of a new technique for determining information on the structural properties of materials, where diffraction methods may be unsuitable. The technique has huge potential to be utilised in the exploration and discovery of new materials and in principle could be applied to any anisotropic system. In Chapter 7, the first example of an incommensurate thiourea inclusion compound is reported. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the tunnel inclusion compound formed between 1-tert-butyl-4-iodobenzene and thiourea has an incommensurate relationship between the periodicities of the host and guest substructures along the tunnel axis, representing the first reported case of an incommensurate thiourea inclusion compound. Finally in Chapter 8, some general conclusions and outlooks for the field are stated. This chapter conveys some of the overarching concepts and questions which motivated the diverse studies presented in this thesis and also expresses some thoughts on the future outlook for the field.

However, very little has been reported on the defect structure of real organic crystals. In the past ten years it became clear that the origin and the structure of the defects depend on the geometrical and chemical nature of the building units of the crystal, the molecules. Molecular size, form and anisotropy, charge distribution, etc. cause the characteristic structure of the defect. Accordingly, a defect structure found in one compound may not be found in others. The defect structure of an organic crystal cannot be defined solely by the displacement of the molecular center from the normal lattice site. A rotational displacement of a molecule is frequently accompanied by a parallel shift of the molecular center. In addition to the usual geometrical crystallographic defects, chemical defects are important too which originate, for example, from differences in the substitution sites of molecules carrying side groups. In order to reveal such defect structures, direct imaging of molecules by high resolution electron microscopy is the only direct method.

Although pseudoelasticity is possible for UICs containing only 2,10-undecanedione, introduction of a structurally similar guest impurity (2-undecanone) gives rise to rubber-like behavior, a form of pseudoelasticity. This phenomenon depends on both the crystal strain and the concentration of monoketone: above 13-14% 2-undecanone, pseudoelastic behavior is observed reliably, even at strains as high as 2.4%. The dramatic change in ferroelastic behavior over a small range of impurity content indicates that this is a critical threshold phenomenon. Because the impurity concentration has such a dramatic effect on domain switching, it was important to determine the sector-dependent patterns of incorporation of this relaxive impurity. Preliminary HPLC analyses of guest populations suggest that preferential incorporation of monoketone guests occurs between nonequivalent growth sectors, and that these patterns can be rationalized using a symmetry specific growth model. Birefringence mapping and HPLC studies of optically anomalous UICs containing mixtures of 2,9-decanedione and 2-decanone (which possess trigonal metric symmetry) suggest analogous patterns in guest incorporation and/or ordering that can also be rationalized. Although crystals of 2,9-decanedione/urea exhibit no ferroelastic strain at ambient temperature, they exhibit a proper ferroelastic phase transition near -170[degrees]C. It is proposed that differential perfection of domains gives rise to pseudoelasticity in UICs, and that relaxive impurities play an important role in the energetics of this process. Because ultrafast video studies of domain reversion kinetics demonstrate no clear correlation of observed rates with impurity content, it is proposed that the relaxive impurities facilitate spontaneous domain reversion by annealing stressed defect sites that would otherwise lead to irreversible or plastic domain switching. Following earlier work using synchrotron white beam X-ray topography, the driving force for domain reversion is thought to involve the presence of nanoscopic twins whose strain is epitaxially mismatched with neighboring daughter domains. The behavior of these nanoscopic twins was monitored with in-situ X-ray diffraction studies of stressed crystals, and this has led to a more thorough understanding of the role of these nanoscopic twins in the ferroelastic domain switching and rubber-like behavior in this class of materials.

The presentation of material in this book reflects these twin themes. Section A is concerned with defects, Section C with techniques and in linking them. Section B provides a concise account of the basic theory necessary for the interpretation of X-ray topographs and diffractometric data. Although the sequence follows roughly the order of presentation at the Advanced Study Institute certain major changes have been made in order to improve the pedagogy. In particular, the first two chapters provide a vital, and seldom articulated, case for the need for characterization for crystals used in device technologies.

It is not surprising, therefore, to find that most universities offer some aspects of crystallography in their undergraduate courses in the physical sciences. It is the principal aim of this book to present an introduction to structure determination by X-ray crystal lography that is appropriate mainly to both final-year undergraduate studies in crystallography, chemistry, and chemical physics, and introductory post graduate work in this area of crystallography. We believe that the book will be of interest in other disciplines, such as physics, metallurgy, biochemistry, and geology, where crystallography has an important part to play. In the space of one book, it is not possible either to cover all aspects of crystallography or to treat all the subject matter completely rigorously. In particular, certain mathematical results are assumed in order that their applications may be discussed. At the end of each chapter, a short bibliog raphy is given, which may be used to extend the scope of the treatment given here. In addition, reference is made in the text to specific sources of information. We have chosen not to discuss experimental methods extensively, as we consider that this aspect of crystallography is best learned through practical experience, but an attempt has been made to simulate the interpretive side of experimental crystallography in both examples and exercises.
