Book excerpt: Domestic violence occurs throughout the United States and has been cited as a major social and health problem, yet most studies have not focused on domestic violence in rural areas. In order to understand if rural women are able to receive the services they need, the study proposes to answer five research questions using data from Illinois: (1) Does the availability of services for victims of domestic violence vary by the degree of rurality of the county? (2) Are measures of social disorganization (poverty, racial heterogeneity, and residential stability) at the county level correlated with the availability of victim services for urban and rural counties? (3) Are measures of cultural factors at the county level correlated with the availability of victim services for urban and rural counties? (4) Is domestic violence and victim need as prevalent in rural counties as in urban counties? (5) Do measures of rurality (such as population density), social disorganization measures at the county and place level, rural cultural factors, or victim need better determine the current availability of services? The main goal of this research is to analyze whether domestic violence emergency services are available where the greatest need is located.

Die vorgefundenen politischen Determinanten von Regional Governance umfassen die Konkurrenz zwischen Regional Governance-Institutionen und demokratisch legitimierten Institutionen, die Strategie höherer politischer Ebenen zur Erlangung von Einfluss auf Regionalpolitik, sowie die Prägung von Regional Governance durch die Interessen von starken Akteuren und deren Koalitionen. In diesem Zusammenhang wird gezeigt, dass der sektorübergreifende Anspruch von Regional Governance aufgrund sektoraler Interessenlagen sowohl in der Formulierung als auch im regionalen Vollzug nicht erfüllt wird und sich lediglich punktuelle Integrationserfolge auf Projektebene erreichen lassen. It elaborates on the kinship system in rural Sindh and explores how young married women strategize and negotiate with patriarchy. Drawing on qualitative methodologies, the book reveals the strong relationship between poverty and the perpetuation of patriarchy. Women’s strategies help elevate their position in their families, such as attention to household tasks, producing children, and doing handicraft work for their well-being. These conditions are usually seen as evidence of women’s subordination, but these are also strategies for survival where accommodation to patriarchy wins them approval. The book concludes that women’s life-long struggle is, in fact, a technique of negotiating with patriarchy. In so doing, they internalize the culture that rests on their subordination and reproduce it in older age in exercising power by oppressing other junior women.
