Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a revised and updated English edition of a textbook that has grown out of several years of teaching. The term "inorganic" is used in a broad sense as the book covers the structural chemistry of representative elements (including carbon) in the periodic table, organometallics, coordination polymers, host-guest systems and supramolecular assemblies. Part I of the book reviews the basic bonding theories, including a chapter on computational chemistry. Part II introduces point groups and space groups and their chemical applications. Part III comprises a succinct account of the structural chemistry of the elements in the periodic table. It presents structure and bonding, generalizations of structural trends, crystallographic data, as well as highlights from the recent literature.

The original part deals with main-group elements, the rare-earth elements, transition-metal clusters, and supramolecular systems. In this new book, selected material from significant advances in the past decade has been added, with particular emphasis on compounds that exemplify new types of bonds such as sigma-hole, triel bond, tetrel bond, pnictogen bond, chalcogen bond, halogen bond, halogen-halogen interaction, aerogen bond, as well as quintuple and sextuple metal-metal bonds. Other new topics include actinide compounds, metallophilicity, heterometallic macrocycles and cages, com- and dis-proportionation reactions, hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), halogen-bonded organic frameworks, halogen-halogen interactions in supramolecular frameworks, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).

Book excerpt: A concise description of models and quantitative parameters in structural chemistry and their interrelations, with 280 tables and >3000 references giving the most up-to-date experimental data on energy characteristics of atoms, molecules and crystals (ionisation potentials, electron affinities, bond energies, heats of phase transitions, band and lattice energies), optical properties (refractive index, polarisability), spectroscopic characteristics and geometrical parameters (bond distances and angles, coordination numbers) of substances in gaseous, liquid and solid states, in glasses and melts, for various thermodynamic conditions. Systems of metallic, covalent, ionic and van der Waals radii, effective atomic charges and other empirical and semi-empirical models are critically revised. Special attention is given to new and growing areas: structural studies of solids under high pressures and van der Waals molecules in gases. The book is addressed to researchers, academics, postgraduates and advanced-course students in crystallography, materials science, physical chemistry of solids.

The book includes a clear exposition of general topics concerning the structures of solids, and a systematic description of the structural chemistry of elements and their compounds. The book is divided into two parts. Part I deals with a number of general topics, including the properties of polyhedra, the nature and symmetry of repeating patterns, and the ways in which spheres, of the same or different sizes, can be packed together. In Part II the structural chemistry of the elements is described systematically, arranged according to the groups of the Periodic Table.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on two main topics in fundamental structural chemistry: the properties of chemical bonding derived from the behavior of the microscopic particles and their wave functions, and the three-dimensional molecular and crystal structures. The principle that ?structure determines properties and properties reflect structures? is clearly demonstrated. This book emphasizes practical examples linking structure with properties and applications which provide invaluable insight for students, thus stimulating their mind to deal with problems in the topics concerned.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the bond valence model, a description of acid-base bonding which is becoming increasingly popular particularly in fields such as materials science and mineralogy where solid state inorganic chemistry is important. Recent improvements in crystal structure determination have allowed the model to become more quantitative. Unlike other models of inorganic chemical bonding, the bond valence model is simple, intuitive, and predictive, and can be used for analysing crystal structures and the conceptual modelling of local as well as extended structures. This is the first book to explore in depth the theoretical basis of the model and to show how it can be applied to synthetic and solution chemistry. It emphasizes the separate roles of the constraints of chemistry and of three-dimensional space by analysing the chemistry of solids. Many applications of the model in physics, materials science, chemistry, mineralogy, soil science, surface science, and molecular biology are reviewed. The final chapter describes how the bond valence model relates to and represents a simplification of other models of inorganic chemical bonding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Chemistry of Inorganic Actinide Compounds is a collection of 13 reviews on structural and coordination chemistry of actinide compounds. Within the last decade, these compounds have attracted considerable attention because of their importance for radioactive waste management, catalysis, ion-exchange and absorption applications, etc. Synthetic and natural actinide compounds are also of great environmental concern as they form as a result of alteration of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste under Earth surface conditions, during burn-up of nuclear fuel in reactors, represent oxidation products of uranium miles and mine tailings, etc. The actinide compounds are also of considerable interest to material scientists due to the unique electronic properties of actinides that give rise to interesting physical properties controlled by the structural architecture of respective compounds. The book provides both general overview and review of recent developments in the field, including such emergent topics as nanomaterials and nanoparticles and their relevance to the transfer of actinides under environmental conditions. * Covers over 2,000 actinide compounds including materials, minerals and coordination polymers* Summarizes recent achievements in the field* Some chapters reveal (secret) advances made by the Soviet Union during the 'Cold war'

Book excerpt: Systematic structural investigations not only have led to the characterization of new general types of organometallic complexes but also have provided new structural and bonding principles. These investigations have included studies on a wide variety of unusual organo (transition metal sulfur complexes). It has been shown that a sulfur atom can function as a doubly-bridging two-electron donating group, a triply-bridging four-electron donating group, a quadruply bridging four-electron donating group, and a quadruply bridging six-electron donating group in organometallic complexes. This work has also uncovered the fact that disulfide groups can be coordinated to one, two, or four transition metals. In addition, several new kinds of metal atom cluster systems have been uncovered, and the importance of metal-metal interactions on the molecular geometries of polynuclear metal carbonyl and cyclopentadienyl complexes has been assessed for several complexes. A brief summary of this work is given. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book explains key concepts in theoretical chemistry and explores practical applications in structural chemistry. For experimentalists, it highlights concepts that explain the underlying mechanisms of observed phenomena, and at the same time provides theoreticians with explanations of the principles and techniques that are important in property design. Themes covered include conceptual and applied wave functions and density functional theory (DFT) methods, electronegativity and hard and soft (Lewis) acid and base (HSAB) concepts, hybridization and aromaticity, molecular magnetism, spin transition and thermochromism. Offering insights into designing new properties in advanced functional materials, it is a valuable resource for undergraduates of physical chemistry, cluster chemistry and structure/reactivity courses as well as graduates and researchers in the fields of physical chemistry, chemical modeling and functional materials.
