Book excerpt: Half of the global primary production is realized in the ocean and a large proportion of the fixed CO2 is used to produce algal polysaccharides. These carbohydrates are a main carbon and energy source fueling marine food webs where they are degraded into monomeric sugars by carbohydrate active enzymes. As the knowledge about the enzymatic degradation of algal polysaccharides in the ocean is still scarce, this thesis aimed to contribute to a deeper understanding of these processes. O-methylation of sugars is a common and very stable modification in marine and terrestrial polysaccharides. It was shown in Article I that cytochrome P450 monooxygenases are an integral part of agar depolymerization systems from marine bacteria where these enzymes catalyze the oxidative demethylation of 6-O-methyl-D-galactose, a monomer found in red algal polysaccharides. These findings place the P450 subfamily CYP236A into the group of carbohydrate-active enzymes as a second class of monooxygenases. The characterized P450s are highly specific for 6 O methyl D galactose and do not accept typical P450 substrates. To understand the molecular determinants for the specific conversion of the polar substrate, protein crystallography was used (Article II). The crystal structure of the P450 from Z. galactanivorans bound to a substrate molecule showed that hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions are involved in substrate recognition, which was further supported by ITC experiments and mutational studies ...

Book excerpt: This extensively updated new edition of the widely acclaimed Treatise on Geochemistry has increased its coverage beyond the wide range of geochemical subject areas in the first edition, with five new volumes which include: the history of the atmosphere, geochemistry of mineral deposits, archaeology and anthropology, organic geochemistry and analytical geochemistry. In addition, the original Volume 1 on "Meteorites, Comets, and Planets" was expanded into two separate volumes dealing with meteorites and planets, respectively. These additions increased the number of volumes in the Treatise from 9 to 15 with the index/appendices volume remaining as the last volume (Volume 16). Each of the original volumes was scrutinized by the appropriate volume editors, with respect to necessary revisions as well as additions and deletions. As a result, 27% were republished without major changes, 66% were revised and 126 new chapters were added. In a many-faceted field such as Geochemistry, explaining and understanding how one sub-field relates to another is key. Instructors will find the complete overviews with extensive cross-referencing useful additions to their course packs and students will benefit from the contextual organization of the subject matter Six new volumes added and 66% updated from 1st edition. The Editors of this work have taken every measure to include the many suggestions received from readers and ensure comprehensiveness of coverage and added value in this 2nd edition The esteemed Board of Volume Editors and Editors-in-Chief worked cohesively to ensure a uniform and consistent approach to the content, which is an amazing accomplishment for a 15-volume work (16 volumes including index volume)!

Book excerpt: As a reflection of the quantum leap that has been made in the study of glycostructures, the first edition of this book has been completely revised and updated. The editors give up-to-date information on glycostructures, their chemistry and chemical biology in the form of a completely comprehensive survey. Glycostructures play highly diverse and crucial roles in a myriad of organisms and important systems in biology, physiology, medicine, bioengineering and technology. Only in recent years have the tools been developed to partly understand the highly complex functions and the chemistry behind them. While many facts remain undiscovered, this MRW has been contributed to by a large number of the world’s leading researchers in the field.

Book excerpt: Microorganisms (bacteria, archaea, microeukaryotes) in marine environments secrete a diverse array of exopolymeric substances that facilitate attachment to surfaces, the formation of organic colloids and larger aggregations of cells (marine snow), and that can influence many ocean, as well as global, processes. The aim of this Research Topic is to highlight recent advances in the sources, chemistry and function of these microbial-produced macromolecules. We encouraged original research and reviews on exopolymeric substances, from their sources, chemico-physiological properties, functions and ecosystem effects, and including their role in the Gulf of Mexico following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster.
