Book excerpt: Excerpt from Structural Changes in West European Agriculture, 1950-70 In current prices the value of agricultural output increased for all West European countries during 1950 - 70, although the relative shares of the value of agricultural output changed little. The countries with the greatest increases in agricultural output tend to be livestock-based and, in general, economically prosperous. Output value tripled in France, West Germany, and the Netherlands during the past two decades. Western Europe in 1970 devoted over half its total land area to agriculture. Of the agricultural area, a little more than half was arable land and orchards. In Western Europe, the United Kingdom had the largest proportion of agricultural land to total land (80 percent in 1969) while Norway had the smallest (3 Percent in 1970) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Agricultural Economy and Trade of the Federal Republic of Germany (Classic Reprint) by : Cynthia Ann Breitenlohner

This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agricultural Economy and Trade of the Federal Republic of Germany Agriculture is not a highly profitable enterprise in West Germany. Farming contributes only 3 to h percent to gross national product, yet the agricultural sector employs nearly 10 percent of the labor force; thus, the average income of farmers is much lower than the average in other professions. The future of West German agriculture will not be especially bright unless there is progress in structural reform. More farmers need to leave the land, and the farms need to be enlarged to make better use of economies of scale. What was it that madelife in the twelfth century more varied, less peaceful, and less secure than before? How can the parellel developments, changes, and transformations that took place in Latin Europe in the High Middle Ages be related to each other? What answers were found to the challenges of the age in England andGermany? This volume gives the reader an opportunity to see how English-speaking and German scholars approach similar themes. Edited by two leading German medievalists, it includes 17 contributions by eminent scholrs from Britain, North America, and Germany. It is divided into 4 sections on modes ofcommunication, war and peace, Christians and non-Christians, and urban and rural developments, and is essential reading for students and scholars of English or German medieval history.

Download or read book Later Medieval Europe written by Daniel Waley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the divine right of kings to the political philosophies of writers such as Machiavelli, the medieval city-states to the unification of Spain, Daniel Waley and Peter Denley focus on the growing power of the state to illuminate changing political ideas in Europe between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries. Spanning the entire continent and beyond, and using contemporary voices wherever possible, the authors include substantial sections on economics, religion, and art, and how developments in these areas fed into and were influenced by the transformation of political thinking. The new edition takes the narrative beyond the confines of western Europe with chapters on East Central Europe and the teutonic knights, and the Portuguese expansion across the Atlantic. The third edition of this classic introduction to the period includes even greater use of contemporary voices, full reading lists, and new chapters on East Central Europe and Portuguese exploration. Suitable as an introductory text for undergraduate courses in Medieval Studies and Medieval European History.
