Book excerpt: Photoperiodism is the response to the length of the day that enables living organisms to adapt to seasonal changes in their environment as well as latitudinal variation. As such, it is one of the most significant andcomplex aspects of the interaction between plants and their environment and is a major factor controlling their growth and development. As the new and powerful technologies of molecular genetics are brought to bear on photoperiodism, it becomes particularly important to place new work in the context of the considerable amount of physiological information which already exists on the subject. This innovative book will be of interest to a wide range of plant scientists, from those interested in fundamental plant physiology and molecular biology to agronomists and crop physiologists. Provides a self-sufficient account of all the important subjects and key literature references for photoperiodism Includes research of the last twenty years since the publication of the First Edition Includes details of molecular genetic techniques brought to bear on photoperiodism

This book was released on 2018 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The floral transition is the process by which plants switch from the vegetative to the reproductive phase. Arabidopsis thaliana is composed of a small genome and has a rapid life cycle; therefore, it's a suitable model for our study. Under long-day photoperiods (LD), the FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) gene is activated in the leaves, then FT protein is transported to the shoot apical meristem (SAM) where floral development is promoted. However, the exact mechanism is not clearly understood. Previous studies in our lab, revealed an increase in the lipid transfer proteins LTP3 and LTP4 expression in the leaf during the floral transition, suggesting a role for LTP3 and LTP4 as a potential flowering hormone transporter. Interestingly, when the former homologous genes were knocked down, a perennial phenotype was observed with growth resuming after senescence. To better understand the biological function of LTP4, we crossed FT mutant (ft-10) with our ltp4-RNAi generating a double mutant plant ( ft-10 ltp4). The double mutant displayed delayed flowering, up to seven and six months later compared to wild-type and ft-10, respectively. Additionally, Unusual phenotypes were observed such as bushy leaves and long bolts with few flowers at the tips. We hypothesized that LTP4 carries the flowering lipid along with FT; therefore, the exhibited phenotypes of our double mutant are due to a lack of a carrier that can move the lipid to the SAM. Here, we showed that LTP4 level is increased at the onset of bolting until 4 days after bolting (4DAB), while LTP3 peaked 4 days before bolting (4DBB) and 10DAB. Moreover, In the ltp4 mutant plants, the relative levels of the genes SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CONSTANS 1 (SOC1) and FRUITFULL (FUL) transcripts were substantially increased after bolting in SAM and leaf, respectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers in the field of ecological genomics aim to determine how a genome or a population of genomes interacts with its environment across ecological and evolutionary timescales. Ecological genomics is trans-disciplinary by nature. Ecologists have turned to genomics to be able to elucidate the mechanistic bases of the biodiversity their research tries to understand. Genomicists have turned to ecology in order to better explain the functional cellular and molecular variation they observed in their model organisms. We provide an advanced-level book that covers this recent research and proposes future development for this field. A synthesis of the field of ecological genomics emerges from this volume. Ecological Genomics covers a wide array of organisms (microbes, plants and animals) in order to be able to identify central concepts that motivate and derive from recent investigations in different branches of the tree of life. Ecological Genomics covers 3 fields of research that have most benefited from the recent technological and conceptual developments in the field of ecological genomics: the study of life-history evolution and its impact of genome architectures; the study of the genomic bases of phenotypic plasticity and the study of the genomic bases of adaptation and speciation.

Book excerpt: The annual research conference for 1996 of the American Institute for Cancer Re search was again held at the Loews L'Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington, DC, August 29 and 30. The topic for this, the seventh in the series, was "Dietary Fat and Cancer: Genetic and Molecular Mechanisms. " Two separate presentations were given as the conference overview. "Fat and Cancer: The Epidemiologic Evidence in Perspective" noted that die tary fat can be saturated, largely from animal or dairy sources, or mono- or polyunsatu rated, mostly from plant sources. Unlike animal fats, fish contain relatively high levels of protective omega-3 fatty acids. Although the hypothesis that dietary fat is associated with cancer is plausible, the mechanisms involved are reasonable, and many animal studies support the hypothesis, there are many obstacles in any direct extrapolation to humans, in cluding imprecise measures of dietary fat intake, variability in individual diets, and spe cies variations. Despite these limitations, there is a weak positive correlation between colon cancer and dietary fat intake, but with substantial differences for various ethnic groups. In the case of breast cancer, there is substantial variation among countries and eth nic groups, but the overall evidence indicated an association with fat in the diet. Epidemiologic studies of dietary fat and prostate cancer are more consistent and most show a positive relationship. However, it was not clear which types of dietary fat were im plicated in the effect.
