Edge Repetition Arrays (ERAs) are calculated for the edge and direction images corresponding to the natural texture image being analyzed. Each ERA entry is the normalized frequency of occurrence of specific types of edge matches occurring with a particular angle and distance separation. The two types of edge matches sought are for element size and spacing. Hence, a one-dimensional structural texture profile can be inferred from the information inherent in these arrays. An algorithm designed to automatically interpret ERA results is presented. This algorithm produces a one-dimensional structural description of the texture, and provides a starting point for the two-dimensional texture primitive search. A texture primitive extraction algorithms is also developed. It uses the information inherent in the above-mentioned texture description to identify the locations of various type of elements within the texture image. The results produced are in the form of individual and composite texture primitive masks as well as descriptions for the individual texture primitive types. A structural texture description should include information about the manner in which the primitives are arranged within the texture. Since the texture primitive masks pinpoint the texture element locations they can be used to calculate a set of rules which characterize this arrangement.

The details of the basic analysis procedure will not be presented in this report. The procedures to generate basic descriptions of natural textures are described in 1-2. The extraction and description of texture elements is described in 3. The final determination of relations (placement rules) and the 4-5. Short descriptions of these programs can also be found in 6-7. The goal of the symbolic analysis program was to produce a description of a texture pattern which is similar to the type of descriptions produced by human observers. The description is based on the appearance and placement of elementary texture primitives. These descriptions can be used for reconstruction of the pattern, for recognition of the input pattern, and for analysis of texture gradients for determination of surface orientations. The last two topics are described in this report.

The king had a pathologically fastidious eye for detail and consequently decided that the map was to be produced at a scale of 1:1. The scribes dutifully set to and, in time, the map was made. The map carried details of every tree, every rock and every blade of grass throughout the entire land. The problem occurred when they tried to use -it. First of all, the map was extraordinarily difficult to open out and line up with the countryside. Its sheer bulk meant that it took whole armies to carry it and a great host of bureaucrats and technicians to maintain the information. Such was the detail of the map that as soon as the wind blew strongly, whole sections needed to be redrawn. What was worse was that all the farmers protested because the map completely cut out the light from the sun and all the crops died. Eventually the howls of protest became so strong that the king was forced to take action. He did away with the old paper copy and decided to use the kingdom itself as the map. All lived happily ever after. There are, at least, two morals to this tale. First, you are almost certainly doomed to failure if you do not get the representation of the problem right.

It was on the occasion of a laboratory visit in connection with the 4th IJCPR (of ~hich Professor Nagao was the very able Program Chairman) that I saw in operation the system described here. On the spot I expressed the desire to see the work described for the inter national technical audience in this series and the authors were kind enough to agree to contribute to a new and unknown series. With the publication of this monograph on the eve of the 5th ICPR my wish is fu1fi11~d. In the case of texture, which is an important visual cue, this problem has hitherto received very little attention. This book presents a solution to the signal to symbol transformation problem for texture. The symbolic de- scription scheme consists of a novel taxonomy for textures, and is based on appropriate mathematical models for different kinds of texture. The taxonomy classifies textures into the broad classes of disordered, strongly ordered, weakly ordered and compositional. Disordered textures are described by statistical mea- sures, strongly ordered textures by the placement of primitives, and weakly ordered textures by an orientation field. Compositional textures are created from these three classes of texture by using certain rules of composition. The unifying theme of this book is to provide standardized symbolic descriptions that serve as a descriptive vocabulary for textures. The algorithms developed in the book have been applied to a wide variety of textured images arising in semiconductor wafer inspection, flow visualization and lumber processing. The taxonomy for texture can serve as a scheme for the identification and description of surface flaws and defects occurring in a wide range of practical applications.
