Download or read book Strong Shadows written by Abigail Zuger and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this gripping book, gifted writer and veteran AIDS doctor Abigail Zuger shows us the face of the AIDS epidemic among the urban poor, in spare, evocative language that makes her patients live before the reader's eyes. There is Eddie, caring for his wife and himself, trying to keep his children out of foster homes. There is elderly Pauline, HIV-positive herself, caring for her grandchildren and watching her daughters die. There is Shannon, whose symptoms are ultimately traced to a surprising source. In a world beset by crime, drugs, and abandonments large and small, AIDS is the latest and bitterest affliction. Doctors and nurses struggle to care for patients in crowded clinics and emergency rooms, far from international biomedical conferences in expensive hotels, from laboratories and journals in which theories are debated, and from glossy state-of-the-art medical centers. The poor live and die, for the most part, in the shadows. This remarkable and memorable book brings them into the light.

Book excerpt: No one had time to think about what it was or how to react to it. With the energy of two million hydrogen bombs, the asteroid blasts through the atmosphere in a second—sweeping half the planet clean of all life. As a few lucky survivors stand in the darkness and look to the skies with gratitude for their lives, black snow starts falling and the great famine begins. It is 2012, and the world has changed forever. Shadow is a plains wolf who has always had food and shelter—all the things he needed to survive—until the great darkness arrived. The wolf is near death when a she-human happens upon him and frees him from his cage at the zoo. She and her dog Champ lead Shadow deep into the forest in a desperate attempt to survive. Eventually tragedy strikes, leaving Champ and Shadow alone. As Shadow and Champ venture high in the mountains, they discover a small wolf pack living on the carcasses buried under the soot-laden snow. As the sun returns and fresh buds form, Shadow must find acceptance within a new family.
Book Synopsis The Semiotics of Light and Shadows by : Piotr Sadowski
Download or read book The Semiotics of Light and Shadows written by Piotr Sadowski and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lighting and shadows are used within a range of art forms to create aesthetic effects. Piotr Sadowski's study of light and shadow in Weimar cinema and contemporaneous visual arts is underpinned by the evolutionary semiotic theories of indexicality and iconicity. These theories explain the unique communicative and emotive power of light and shadow when used in contemporary indexical media including the shadow theatre, silhouette portraits, camera obscura, photography and film. In particular, Sadowski highlights the aesthetic and emotional significance of shadows. The 'cast shadow', as an indexical sign, maintains a physical connection with its near-present referent, such as a hidden person, stimulating a viewer's imagination and provoking responses including anxiety or curiosity. The 'cinematic shadow' plays a stylistic role, by enhancing image texture, depth of field, and tonal contrast of cinematic moments. Such enhancements are especially important in monochromatic films, and Sadowski interweaves the book with accounts of seminal Weimar cinema moments. Sadowski's book is distinctive for combining historical materials and theoretical approaches to develop a deeper understanding of Weimar cinema and other contemporary art forms. The Semiotics of Light and Shadows is an ideal resource for both scholars and students working in linguistics, semiotics, film, media, and visual arts.
