Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living in the Roman world of the fourth century could be very challenging. It was a time of change and danger. Barbarians were attacking the empire from all directions. At sea, no ship was safe from pirates. From the east, the Sasanian Empire from Persia was once more challenging the power of Rome. Even religion was changing. The new Christian religion was spreading throughout the empire. But which Christian beliefs were to be accepted? Constantine settled the problem by calling the Council of Nicaea. His mother, Helena, would contribute much to the new religion. The story is told by a large cast of characters that represent people from different backgrounds: soldiers, slaves, religious people, and beautiful women. The main character is Julia, the daughter of a retired Roman soldier whose estate in the south of Gaul produced grapes and olive oil. As a young girl, she got the Strike of Venus when playing the game of talus bones. This assured her of a charmed life. Then one day, she, her father, and her slave left by ship with wine for Constantines new city in the east. She met a handsome young officer of the Imperial Navy who was to protect her from pirates. Other characters include Antaios from Alexandria, who tried being a monk in Upper Egypt; Meirit, a beautiful Jewish woman who would steal his heart; Belisar the Manichaen, who fought the Sasanians; and Puglius, the slave, who would steal from his mistress, murder his family, and then become a Christian. Also included is how Helena found the tabulum, which was affixed to the cross of Jesus, and what she did with it. This and many more fascinating stories are included in the book.

Book excerpt: The award-winning, New York Times bestselling literary masterpiece of Shirley Hazzard—the story of two beautiful orphan sisters whose fates are as moving and wonderful, and yet as predestined, as the transits of the planets themselves A Penguin Classic Considered "one of the great English-language novels of the twentieth century" (The Paris Review), The Transit of Venus follows Caroline and Grace Bell as they leave Australia to begin a new life in post-war England. From Sydney to London, New York, and Stockholm, and from the 1950s to the 1980s, the two sisters experience seduction and abandonment, marriage and widowhood, love and betrayal. With exquisite, breathtaking prose, Australian novelist Shirley Hazzard tells the story of the displacements and absurdities of modern life. The result is at once an intricately plotted Greek tragedy, a sweeping family saga, and a desperate love story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many observations are interpreted in terms of the then-current paradigm. Here, a review of almost 1290 scientific papers shows that the significance of some key observations have not been appreciated while some key facts have been ignored. It is assumed planets formed from a distribution of planetesimals, but we do not know how dust accreted to planetesimals. Oligarchic accretion should not apply beyond 10 AU, but this would mean LkCa 15b, and TYC 8998-760-1 b and c were impossible. The atmospheres of three of our rocky planets have clearly different atmospheric compositions, but they are supposed to come from one source, which has the wrong elemental ratios for any of them. The early Earth atmosphere is believed to have been oxidized, but samples from the time show that the atmosphere contained much methane, and the oceans much ammonia. We cannot understand how Mars could have running water, yet there are river valleys. This book argues these and many other problems go away if we assume the initial accretion was caused by chemistry, including physical chemistry, and our solar system is an archetype for planetary formation. If our water was ammoniacal, why could not the Martian water have been, in which case it would flow at the obvious low temperatures. The case is made that life can only evolve from a planet with Earth’s chemistry, and it evolved around fumaroles. There are at least seven reasons why there will be no life under-ice at Europa. These conclusions mainly come from putting together information already known, together with a few original propositions. The book ends with a large number of predictions, including some from experiments that could be carried out in a lab on Earth.

Book excerpt: A brilliant but frustrated painter is drawn into an elaborate forgery scheme as he slips into the life of a seventeenth century master in this acclaimed novel. Chaz Wilmot makes his living cranking out old-master parodies for ads and magazine covers. When he’s offered a job restoring a Venetian palace fresco, he’s skeptical to say the least—the job seems to be more forgery than restoration. But seduced by the challenge, Chaz executes the job brilliantly. This feat attracts the attention of Werner Krebs, a shady art dealer who becomes Wilmot’s patron. Wilmot is suddenly working with a fervor he hasn’t felt in years, but without warning, he finds himself reliving moments from the past. At first, they are moments from his own childhood. But soon, he believes he can travel back to the 17th century where he embodies the renowned Spanish artist Velazquez. Unsure if these excursions into history are real, Wilmot slowly enters a secret world of gangsters, greed, and murder. At the center of it all is his mystery patron. But is Werner a criminal mastermind plotting a priceless forgery, or the man who will save Wilmot from obscurity and madness? Miraculously inventive, this book cements Gruber’s reputation as one of the most imaginative and gifted writers of our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A passionately urgent call for all of us to unlearn imperialism and repair the violent world we share, from one of our most compelling political theorists In this theoretical tour-de-force, renowned scholar Ariella Aïsha Azoulay calls on us to recognize the imperial foundations of knowledge and to refuse its strictures and its many violences. Azoulay argues that the institutions that make our world, from archives and museums to ideas of sovereignty and human rights to history itself, are all dependent on imperial modes of thinking. Imperialism has segmented populations into differentially governed groups, continually emphasized the possibility of progress while it tries to destroy what came before, and voraciously seeks out the new by sealing the past away in dusty archival boxes and the glass vitrines of museums. By practicing what she calls potential history, Azoulay argues that we can still refuse the original imperial violence that shattered communities, lives, and worlds, from native peoples in the Americas at the moment of conquest to the Congo ruled by Belgium's brutal King Léopold II, from dispossessed Palestinians in 1948 to displaced refugees in our own day. In Potential History, Azoulay travels alongside historical companions—an old Palestinian man who refused to leave his village in 1948, an anonymous woman in war-ravaged Berlin, looted objects and documents torn from their worlds and now housed in archives and museums—to chart the ways imperialism has sought to order time, space, and politics. Rather than looking for a new future, Azoulay calls upon us to rewind history and unlearn our imperial rights, to continue to refuse imperial violence by making present what was invented as “past” and making the repair of torn worlds the substance of politics.

It brilliantly captures the fundamental lessons from the experience of mass workers' strikes and their role in the 1905 Russian Revolution. Luxemburg lived in a world in crisis - one characterised by the fast approach of the First World War - and in an era when revolutionary struggles and ideas broke out internationally. Now, over a century later, capitalism is lunging deeper into a crisis of mammoth economic, political, social and ecological proportions. The need for mass strikes that can spill over into revolution is now existential. In this short book, Luxemburg shows how strikes call into question the relationship between the working class and the employing class, how political and economic demands fuse in the course of such strikes, and how they can start to challenge the conservative approach of the trade union leaders. Her book is as relevant as ever in hel
