Book excerpt: The articles in this volume consider the prevailing standards of feminine decorum, and how these are being played with and challenged by various media. This is a collection of essays which focuses on the representation of women's bodies in historical and contemporary cultures. It discusses recent books on the subject, and compares the two different approaches to the body adopted by the soft-porn magazine "For Women", and the women's monthly "Cosmopolitan". It also examines TV cult figures, such as the "comic body" exemplified by comedienne Joe Brand, and situation comedies such as "Absolutely Fabulous".

Download or read book Strictly Women written by Rose Clement and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's a growing trend among women in society today: feelings of inadequacy, doubt, and belief that their dreams don't matter to anyone but themselves. However, for author Rose Clement, what she sees in women today are ladies who have lost their sense of femininity and don't realize the amazing creations they are as daughters of the Almighty God. Her new book, Strictly Women, is to reach women who are in this position of low self-esteem and uncertainty of their capabilities. A mother of six who worked for 32 years as a social worker, Rose experienced firsthand broken women and families in social work who had been beaten down by circumstances and aftermaths of tragedies. She realized God wanted her to help these women more when God drew Rose's eyes to notice two women at church who He told, in a still, small voice, that they needed knowing their beauty and femininity again. Feeling unqualified for this task, the stories of Moses and Jeremiah from the Bible came to her mind as individuals who also felt inadequate for their assignments from God and how they flourished when they trusted God. Within the pages of Strictly Women, readers will find stories to inspire them to silence the naysayers in their lives and listen for God's promptings of encouragement and love for who they are. Exemplary stories from the Bible are shared as examples, combined with Rose's recounting of raising six children by herself after her husband's tragic car accident. Her own journey with God toward renewed discovery in her femininity prompted Rose to see God leading her to awaken in women their true natures in Christ as well. This influenced her to create Strictly Women, a book so women can see the beauty God has established in every woman and various purposes He has bestowed upon them in life.
Book Synopsis Burning the veil by : Neil MacMaster
Download or read book Burning the veil written by Neil MacMaster and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. Burning the veil draws upon sources from newly-opened archives, exploring the ‘emancipation’ of Muslim women from the veil, seclusion and perceived male oppression during the Algerian War of decolonisation. The claimed French liberation was contradicted by the violence inflicted on women through rape, torture and destruction of villages. This book examines the roots of this contradiction in the theory of ‘revolutionary warfare’, and the attempt to defeat the National Liberation Front by penetrating the Muslim family, seen as a bastion of resistance. Striking parallels with contemporary Afghanistan and Iraq, French ‘emancipation’ produced a backlash that led to deterioration in the social and political position of Muslim women. This analysis of how and why attempts to Westernise Muslim women ended in catastrophe has contemporary relevance and will be important to students and academics engaged in the study of French and colonial history, feminism and contemporary Islam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From Library Journal : Traditionally, Iranian women have been veiled from public view and constrained from public expression. Milani illustrates that in Iran the 19th-century movement to unveil was closely linked to women's emergence as literary figures. This, the first work devoted to the rich literature of the female writers of Iran, is itself an example of great literature from an Iranian female writer. With poetic insight, Milani dis cusses the themes of disclosure and secrecy that have delineated the Iranian woman's universe and characterized her expression. Highly recommended for all literature, anthropology, and women's studies collections."--Amazon.ca.
