Download or read book 1400 F Ultra High Strength Alloy Development Program written by S. F. Sternasty and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A research program aimed toward the development of a wrought nickel-base sheet alloy with a high strength-to-weight advantage up to 1400 degree F is described. The target properties were 1000 hour stress rupture strength to density ratio of 250,000 inches and 150,000 psi .2% yield strength, both at 1400 degree F. Laboratory heats were melted, processed to sheet, and tested. Several alloys exhibited yield strengths in excess of 180,000 psi at 1400 degree F with rupture strengths better than current high yield strength sheet alloys. None of the alloys, however, had the desired ductilities and stress rupture lives. The alloys selected for further evaluation were based on a statistical analysis of the chemical composition and mechanical property data generated on the previous heats. By exploitation several alloys were identified that combined exceedingly high yield strength with ductility. The best alloys had an extrapolated 1400 degree F/1000 hour rupture strength of 67,000 psi, which is about 10,000 psi over the best commercially available wrought alloy, U-700.

Book Synopsis Superalloys by : Matthew J. Donachie
Download or read book Superalloys written by Matthew J. Donachie and published by ASM International. This book was released on 2002 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers virtually all technical aspects related to the selection, processing, use, and analysis of superalloys. The text of this new second edition has been completely revised and expanded with many new figures and tables added. In developing this new edition, the focus has been on providing comprehensive and practical coverage of superalloys technology. Some highlights include the most complete and up-to-date presentation available on alloy melting. Coverage of alloy selection provides many tips and guidelines that the reader can use in identifying an appropriate alloy for a specific application. The relation of properties and microstructure is covered in more detail than in previous books.
Book Synopsis Chromium and Chromium Alloys by : D. J. Maykuth
Download or read book Chromium and Chromium Alloys written by D. J. Maykuth and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various alloying additions have been discovered which render unalloyed chromium much less susceptible to low-temperature embrittlement as well as to nitridation in air at elevated temperatures. These include additions of the Group IIIA metals, magnesia, and carbides based on the Groups IVA and VA metals. Of these additions, only the carbides contribute significantly to the hot strengthening of chromium. The combination of selected carbides and solid-solution-strengthening elements such as tungsten, molybdenum, and/or tantalum, has resulted in experimental alloys which retain useful strengths at temperatures through 1316 C (2400 F). These high strengths are achieved at some sacrifice in the low-temperature ductility of chromium. Also, despite the improvements afforded in the oxidation and nitridation resistance of chromium through alloying, no alloys are available which are capable of service in long-time exposures in air above 982 C (1800 F) without suffering some property degradation.

Book Synopsis Current Methods of Fracture-toughness Testing of High-strength Alloys with Emphasis on Plane Strain by : J. E. Campbell
Download or read book Current Methods of Fracture-toughness Testing of High-strength Alloys with Emphasis on Plane Strain written by J. E. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture-toughness testing using principles of fracture mechanics has developed to the point where it can be used as a basis for selection of materials, for estimating limiting design stresses assuming the presence of small flaws, and for analyzing failures. Current methods of measuring plane-stress and plane-strain fracturetoughness parameters are presented in this report. The specimens include center-cracked, edge-cracked, single-edge-cracked, surface-cracked, and notched round bars, which are subjected to tensile loading, and notched bars for bend tests. The different types of specimens permit evaluating sheet, plate, bar stock, and forgings as well as material from failed structures. Application of fracture-toughness parameters to design of high-strength structures is reviewed for both static and fatigue loading. Consideration of the fracture-mechanics concepts in design should lead to fewer problems with brittle fracture in high-strength structures. (Author).
