Book excerpt: The effects of filler loading on the tensile and elongation at break of SMR 10 using a sulphur vulcanization system was studied. Carbon black (N220) was used as the fillers and the loading range was from 10 to 40 phr. Two Roll Mill (Model LS-22005) and 25 Ton Hot Cold Molding Press (Model LS22025) used for mixing and molding press. Both equipments were supplied by Lotus Scientific. Tensile and elongation at break were determined using a Universal Testing Machine (Model 133004600771) operating at 20 mm/min. Results show that, elongation at break decreases, but tensile strength, increase with filler loading. This observation is attributed to the rubber-filler interphaseinteraction of carbon black and rubber.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, the effect of filler loadings (carbon black) on the tensile strength of SMR 10 was investigated. The carbon black grade was chosen N220 and the loading ranges were set 20, 40, 50, and 60 parts per hundred rubbers (phr). For the mixing and moulding process, the Two Roll Mill (Model LS-22005) and 25 Ton Hot Cold Molding Press (Model LS22025) was used which is supplied by Lotus Scientific. In order to determine the tensile strength values, a Universal Testing Machine (Model 133004600771) operating at 20 mm/min was used. It was found that the tensile strength increase with the increasing of carbon black loading until it reaches at the maximum interphase interaction between the polymer chains and filler. This observation is attributed to the rubber-filler interphase interaction of carbon black and rubber.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tensile and tear properties of edge-cut specimens of natural rubber vulcanizates containing varying amounts of a coarse (particle size: 250 nm, surface area: 13 m2/cc) carbon black (N990) were determined at different temperatures. The properties of these vulcanizates at 25°C were compared with those determined by other researchers that contained N115 (particle size: 27 nm, surface area: 200 m2/cc) and N660 black (particle size: 55 nm, surface area: 63 m2/cc). At low carbon black loadings (6-12 phr), N990 black gave a higher tear strength than that with the finer N115 and N660, but, the converse was true at higher carbon black loadings (25-75 phr)! Multiple cracks at the tip of an edge-cut were first observed at 55 phr of N990 while 18 phr and 40 phr have been reported previously for N115 and N660, respectively. Furthermore, unlike in the case of the N115- and N660- vulcanizates, multiple crack formation in edge-cut N990 samples did not give much reinforcement; even a vulcanizate with 100 phr loading of N990 was only marginally stronger than the gum vulcanizate at all the cut depths. For a given carbon black loading, crack complexity generally increased with increase in temperature, while tear resistance decreased.

Book excerpt: Advances in Polymer Science enjoys a longstanding tradition and good reputation in its community. Each volume is dedicated to a current topic and each review critically surveys one aspect of that topic, to place it within the context of the volume. The volumes typically summarize the significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years and discuss them critically, presenting selected examples, explaining and illustrating the important principles and bringing together many important references of primary literature. On that basis, future research directions in the area can be discussed. Advances in Polymer Science volumes thus are important references for every polymer scientist, as well as for other scientists interested in polymer science - as an introduction to a neighboring field, or as a compilation of detailed information for the specialist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to their unique properties, rubber materials are found in multiple engineering applications such as tires, engine mounts, shock absorbers, flexible joints, seals, etc. Nevertheless, the complex nature of the behavior of such material makes it difficult to accurately model and predict the performance of these units. The challenge to correctly reproduce the observed characteristics of rubber elements necessitates detailed experimental investigations, development of accurate constitutive models, validation of techniques to identify material parameters and efficient numerical methods. Aspects regarding fatigue and damage in elastomers are not to be left aside, as they influence the durability of the products. State-of-the-art technology in terms of constitutive modeling, numerical implementation, damage and fatigue resistance are strongly represented in these Proceedings, along with insights into advanced elastomers to be used in novel applications. Topics included in this volume are: Ageing, Friction and abrasion, Adhesion, Swelling, Continuum mechanical models and numerical implementation, Hyperelasticity, Micro-mechanical approaches, Fracture and fatigue, Mullins effect, Strain induced crystallization, Thermal effects, Reinforcement and vulcanization, Design and applications, Smart elastomers. Constitutive Models for Rubber VIII is of interest not only for undergraduates, postgraduates, academics and researchers in the discipline, but also for all those design and development engineers in the industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Natural rubber compounds with various amounts of N660 carbon black were prepared. Tensile properties were measured using pre-cut specimens and detailed cracking patterns were characterized. Results are compared to those of a previous researcher, who used a finer black (N115). With either black, a critical amount was needed to provide reinforcement. Vulcanizates with N660 are weaker than those containing N115, and the former have smaller critical size. Additionally, compared to the N115 compounds, more N660 black is needed to produce reinforcement. In the gum vulcanizate, pre-cut specimens fail in a "stick-slip" manner, but fracture proceeds simply across specimens. While, in filled rubber, significant tear deviation occurs. This blunting reduces stress concentration and is a necessary feature for reinforcement. Anisotropy developed because of crystallization and plays an important role in tear deviation. Carbon black accelerates crystallization, but decreases deformability. A small amount of filler does not result in enough crystallinity for tear deviation"--P. iii.
