Book excerpt: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a prevalent problem in families with many children exposed to the violence each year. IPV has been associated with negative outcomes in children including trauma symptoms. A potential avenue to explore to determine which IPV-exposed children are at greatest risk for trauma symptom development is physiological functioning both at baseline and in response to stress. Previous research has demonstrated that trauma exposed children may display atypical physiological functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and sympathetic nervous system (SNS). Additionally, atypical physiological functioning has also been associated with maladjustment in children. However, much of this work has focused on the independent effects of the HPA axis and SNS and results have been inconsistent with some finding increased activation, decreased activation or normative functioning associated with poor child outcomes. Bauer and colleagues (2002) argued that these physiological systems need to be examined concurrently to understand which children are at highest risk for maladjustment. Additionally, they put forth two competing models, the interactive (asymmetrical activation is associated with increased risk) and additive (symmetrical functioning is associated with increased risk) models, to describe how the HPA axis and SNS may interact. The present study examined whether the inclusion of both systems best predicts trauma symptoms in IPV-exposed children over the individual effects of each system. Furthermore, it investigates which model, the additive or interactive, best describe the interaction of the two physiological systems. Thirty-five mother-child dyads (children aged 6-12 years) with a history of IPV exposure were included in the study. Children completed a parent-child interaction and mental arithmetic task with saliva samples collected five times over the course of the session. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were conducted to assess whether the interaction between both baseline levels and reactivity levels of cortisol and alpha amylase best predicted child trauma symptoms. Significant interactions were plotted per Aiken and West (1991). Findings supported Bauer et al.'s (2002) suggestion of using a multi-system approach and there was support for both the additive and interactive models. Future directions for research are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Cognitive contextual framework (Grych & Fincham, 1990) and emotional security theory (Cummings & Davies, 1994) posit that children's appraisals about interparental conflict influence child adjustment outcomes. Though children exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) involving their parents are at increased risk for developing trauma symptoms as well as dysregulated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis functioning, the cognitive precursors to these outcomes have rarely been studied. The present study sought to investigate children's threat and self-blame appraisals about interparental conflict as potential mechanisms contributing to these adverse outcomes. The influence of child and family level contextual factors (gender; parent-child relationships) were also examined. The sample consisted of 119 10-year-olds and their mothers who were recruited from the community as a part of a larger longitudinal study of IPV. Though children's reports of IPV exposure in the past year were not associated with symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), greater exposure to parental IPV was associated with attenuated cortisol output during the Trier Social Stress Test for children. Greater IPV exposure was also associated with increased threat appraisals, as well as worse parent-child relationship quality. Indirect effects of IPV on PTSD symptoms and HPA axis responsivity through children's appraisals were not significant. These results suggest that witnessing parental IPV is threatening for children and can have negative consequences for parent-child relationships. In addition, this study highlights the complexity of factors that influence the development of trauma symptoms following exposure to parental IPV.

Book excerpt: Post-traumatic stress symptoms are high among female survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV), and children of parents experiencing post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are at heightened risk for a wide range of emotional and behavioral problems. Parenting has significant influence on child adjustment, and although links have been found between parental psychopathology and maladaptive parenting behaviors, little is known about the factors that may explain this relation. The current study examines mother's emotion regulation (ER) as a mediator of the relation between mother PTSS and parenting, particularly around children's emotions in a study sample of sixty-four female survivors of IPV and their 6-12 year old children. Mothers reported on their own posttraumatic stress symptoms and their parenting. Mother's ER was measured by observer coding of the Meta-Emotion Interview (Katz & Gottman, 1986), a structured assessment that asks parents about their attitudes towards and experiences with emotions, including their regulation of emotions. Mothers' total trauma symptom severity showed a significant indirect effect on supportive parenting reactions around children's emotions via mothers' emotion regulation. Results suggest that mother's ER abilities represent factors that significantly impact associations between maternal PTSS and parenting practices around children's experiences of emotion, particularly in regards to adaptive parenting responses. Implications for assessment and intervention with families exposed to the stress of IPV are discussed.
