Book excerpt: In 2009, as part of the Government of Canada's commitment to global food security, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) announced its Food Security Strategy. CIDA's Food Security Strategy builds on Canada's wealth of experience in agriculture research and development, food assistance, and nutrition. The Food Security Strategy recognizes food security as a fundamental component of development through its contribution to improved health, education and achievement of equality and rights. A key objective of the Food Security Strategy is to " ... increase the resilience of the poor by reducing their vulnerability to immediate and long term impacts that affect their food security" through three pillars--agriculture production, research and food aid and nutrition. In support of CIDA's commitment to review progress on its Food Security Strategy and to integrate lessons learned to strengthen the impact of the Strategy, the following discussion paper presents the results of research carried out by the Canadian Food Security Policy Group (FSPG) on its members' programming. The goal of the FSPG research is to provide concrete examples of how Canadian investments in food security are contributing to the goals of CIDA's Food Security Strategy.

Book excerpt: Food is a bigger employer in Canada than you may realize. In fact, food manufacturing is the largest manufacturing employer in Canada, responsible for 250,000 direct jobs. But that number pales in comparison to the food services industry, where an additional 1 million Canadians make their living. And with so many people dependent on Canadians eating well and eating out, changes in spending can mean big issues for jobs, hours, and the industries themselves. So what should Canadian Food Businesses expect in the coming year? Join Michael Burt, The Conference Board's Director of Industrial Economic Trends for a presentation and discussion of the economic outlook for Canada's Food Manufacturing and Food Services Industries. Canadian households will likely remain cautious in their spending in the coming year. Consumers may look to limit the amount of times they dine out or visit quick-service restaurants. Millennials are the only age group to increase the number of visits per capita to restaurants in 2014. Increased tourism will be significant source of growth for the food services industry to help offset softness in domestic demand. Consumer trends are also shaping the outlook for food manufacturing, noticeably in the meat products segment. Annual per-person meat consumption has declined since 1999 as meat prices have increased and Canadians have reduced the amount of red meat in their diets. Export growth is the one bright spot for this segment going forward. For export-oriented products such as seafood and grain and oilseed milling, the lower Canadian dollar is expected to boost growth. You won't want to miss this detailed look into the food sector, which includes expert analysis of how consumer trends will impact the food business in 2016 and beyond.

Book excerpt: Like other nations, the U.S. faces growing food safety challenges resulting from 3 major trends: (1) imported food makes up a growing share of the food supply; (2) consumers are increasingly eating foods that are raw or have had minimal processing and that are often associated with foodborne illness; (3) more of the U.S. population is, and increasingly will be, susceptible to foodborne illness. This report describes how Canada, the EU, Germany, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, and the U.K.: ensure the safety of imported food; respond to outbreaks of foodborne illness; and measure the effectiveness of their reorganized food safety systems. Also, identifies emerging food safety challenges that they expect to face over the next decade. Charts and tables.

Food chain integrity reviews key research in this fast-moving area and how it can be applied to improve the provision of food to the consumer. Chapters in part one review developments in food traceability, such as food ‘biotracing’, and methods to prevent food bioterrorism. Following this, part two focuses on developments in food safety and quality management. Topics covered include advances in understanding of pathogen behaviour, control of foodborne viruses, hazard ranking and the role of animal feed in food safety. Chapters in part three explore essential aspects of food authenticity, from the traceability of genetically modified organisms in supply chains to new methods to demonstrate food origin. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to provide an economic analysis of the relationship between scale and productivity in Canada's food processing and its significance for Canadian public policy and management purposes. With the changing global agri-food environment and future demand opportunities, scale in food processing is one factor that allows participating Canadian firms to compete successfully in this environment. Large scale processing drives large scale demand for agricultural products, leads to growth of markets along the whole value chain and allows firms to satisfy both the domestic and export markets.
