Book excerpt: The dependence of the yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, and reduction in area on temperature for the V-15Ti-7.5Cr, V-20Ti, V-15Cr-5Ti, V-12Cr-5Ti, V-10Cr-5Ti, and V-3Ti-1Si alloys was determined from tensile tests at temperatures ranging from 25 to 700°C. The strength of the alloys increased with an increase of the combined Cr and Ti concentration. The total elongation for the alloys ranged between 20% and 38%. The reduction in area ranged from 30% to 90%. The DBTT, which was determined from the temperature dependence of the reduction in area, was less than 25°C for the V-15Ti-7.5Cr, V-20Ti, and V-3Ti-1Si alloys. The DBTT for the V-10Cr-5Ti, V-12Cr-5Ti, and V-15Cr-5Ti alloys was also less than 25°C if these alloys were annealed to reduce the hydrogen concentration prior to the tensile test. If these latter alloys were not annealed prior to the tensile test, the DBTT ranged from 40°C to 90°C and the DBTT increased with an increase of the Cr concentration. A Cr/Ti concentration ratio of 0 to 0.5 in these alloys was found to cause the alloys to be less susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. 14 refs., 4 figs., 3 tabs.

Book excerpt: There appear to be two ways in which interstitials promote brittle behavior in Groups V-A and VI-A refractory metals: (1) By locating at the grain boundaries in the form of segregates of precipitates, promoting grain-boundary rupture and crack initiation; and (2) In solid solution by inhibiting dislocation movement and reducing the resistance to crack propagation. Both embrittling effects operate in Group VI-A metals; whereas, only the latter is significant in the Group V-A at the levels of purity currently achieved. The problem of reducing the low-temperature brittleness of Group V-A metals is readily solved through the purity route. Purification of Group V-A metals to interstitial levels well below the solubility limits may be readily accomplished either in the initial purification of the base metal or during melting or consolidation. There are three possible routes to solving the problem of the embrittling effect of interstitials on the Group VI-A metals: (1) the purity route, (2) through working, and (3) through alloying (thermodynamically through strong scavengers, by additions which modify the electron bonding, and via grain-refining dispersions). Book excerpt: Vanadium-base alloys are promising candidate materials for application in fusion reactor first-wall and blanket structures because they offer several important advantages, i.e., inherently low irradiation-induced activity, good mechanical properties, good compatibility with lithium, high thermal conductivity, and good resistance to irradiation-induced swelling and damage. As part of a program to screen candidate alloys and develop an optimized vanadium-base alloy, extensive investigations of various V-Ti, V-Cr-Ti, and V-Ti-Si alloys have been conducted after irradiation in lithium in fission reactors. From these investigations, V-4 wt.% Cr-4 wt.% Ti was identified as the most promising alloy. The alloy exhibited attractive mechanical and physical properties that are prerequisites for first-wall and blanket structures, i.e., high tensile strength, high ductility, good creep properties, high impact energy, low ductile-brittle transition temperature before and after irradiation, excellent resistance to irradiation-induced swelling and microstructural instability, and good resistance to corrosion in lithium. In particular, the alloy is virtually immune to irradiation-induced embrittlement, a remarkable property compared to other candidate materials being investigated in the fusion-reactor-materials community. Effects of helium, charged dynamically in simulation of realistic fusion reactor conditions, on tensile, ductile-brittle transition, and swelling properties were insignificant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vanadium-base alloys are candidates for use as structural material in magnetic fusion reactors. In comparison to other candidate structural materials (e.g., Type 316 stainless and HT-9 ferritic steels), vanadium-base alloys such as V-15Cr-5Ti and V-20Ti have intrinsically lower long-term neutron activation, neutron irradiation after-heat, biological hazard potential, and neutron-induced helium and hydrogen transmutation rates. Moreover, vanadium-base alloys can withstand a higher surface-heat, flux than steels because of their lower thermal stress factor. In addition to having these favorable neutronic and physical properties, a candidate alloy for use as structural material in a fusion reactor must have dimensional stability, i.e., swelling resistance, and resistance to embrittlement during the reactor lifetime at a level of structural strength commensurate with the reactor operating temperature and structural loads. In this paper, we present experimental results on the swelling and tensile properties of several vanadium-base alloys after irradiation at 420, 520, and 600°C to neutron fluences ranging from 0.3 to 1.9 x 1027 neutrons/m2 (17 to 114 atom displacements per atom (dpa)).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The next generation of high temperature structural alloys must exhibit exceptional resistance to fracture, creep, oxidation, and fatigue at high temperatures. Chromium is being considered due to its high melting point (>1800°C), relatively low density (~7.2 g/cc), high temperature strength, and oxidation resistance. Limiting the use of chromium is its high ductile-to-brittle transition temperature. Previous efforts to reduce the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature have considered elimination of embrittling interstitals, increasing the grain size, pre-deformation and alloying. Recent computational studies have renewed interest in using alloying additions to ductilize chromium. A series of first principles calculations recently revealed elements (Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb, V) which have potential to reduce the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature when alloyed with chromium. To experimentally measure the effects of alloying and processing on the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature, chromium-vanadium alloy samples of 3 different compositions were prepared and compared to nominally pure chromium. Chromium vanadium samples were prepared from powders, hot isostatically pressed, heat treated at 1300°C and extruded at 1200°C. Elevated temperature Vickers hardness, elevated temperature tensile and elevated 3-point bend tests were performed. A diffusion study was performed using microprobe analysis to assist in the development of homogenization procedures for the alloys. Fracture surface analysis of bend and tensile specimens was used to determine the mode of fracture in bend and tensile specimens. Elevated temperature tensile tests determined a relationship between temperature and ductility in 100%Cr and 25%Cr-75%V alloys. Results from elevated temperature Vickers hardness suggest alloying with vanadium increases the strength by a factor of two. Premature failure in elevated temperature 3-point bend specimens and elevated temperature tensile tests made it difficult to quantify the effect of vanadium in affecting the ductility of chromium. Electron microscopy observations indicate that mechanical damage, likely caused by extrusion, is responsible for initiating the premature failures. Despite this complication, evidence of micro- and macro-scale ductile fracture mechanisms on the fracture surfaces of the Cr-V alloys indicate that the addition of vanadium indeed improves the ductility of chromium.

Book excerpt: Provides a thorough explanation of the basic properties of materials; of how these can be controlled by processing; of how materials are formed, joined and finished; and of the chain of reasoning that leads to a successful choice of material for a particular application. The materials covered are grouped into four classes: metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. Each class is studied in turn, identifying the families of materials in the class, the microstructural features, the processes or treatments used to obtain a particular structure and their design applications. The text is supplemented by practical case studies and example problems with answers, and a valuable programmed learning course on phase diagrams.
