Book excerpt: Stratigraphic measurement of the 1,238-rn thick Cowlitz Formation in the southwest Washington type section along Olequa and Stillwater creeks reveals complex facies succession of wave- to tide-dominated deltaic sequences. The underlying, 625-rn thick upper member of the McIntosh Formation (as mapped by Wells, 1981) is composed of two units: a basal 130-m thick prograding offshore to marginal marine coal-bearing, lithic-arkosic sandstone facies succession (upper McIntosh sandstone) and a thicker, 500- m thick bathyal foraminilera-rich siltstone facies that is, in part, in fault contact with the overlying Cowlitz Formation. The lower member of the McIntosh Formation is 375 rn thick in Stillwater Creek, with the base not exposed in the study area. The Cowlitz Formation is subdivided into five informal units. The basal 558-m thick unit consists of (1) multiple prograding, wave-dominated shoreface hummocky stratified lithic arkosic sandstone successions (unit 1A) that comprise several thickeningand coarsening-upwards parasequences and (2) coal-bearing delta plain facies associations (unit 1B). The 205-m thick second unit is composed of five coarsening-up stormdominated, hummocky-bedded shelf to delta-front arkosic sandstone parasequences. Fining-upwards subtidal, intertidal, and supratidal facies associations constitute the 170-m thick third member. Tidal-estuarine facies in unit 3 include: (1) nested subtidal micaceous lithic-arkosic sandstone channels, (2) cross-bedded subtidal sandstone ridges with brackish water mollusc hash, (3) sandy and muddy accretionary-bank, and (4) coalbearing marsh-swamp deposits. Thin basaltic volcaniclastic interbeds occur within units one, two, and three. A 155-m thick fourth unit, consists of wave-dominated, arkosic sandstone, shoreface to offshore bioturbated mudstone facies successions; these successions form 10 coarsening-upward parasequences that overall define a retrogradational parasequence set. Thick, transgressive, bioturbated outer shelfal molluscbearing sandy siltstone and glauconitic mudstone in the Big Bend type locality along the Cowlitz River can be correlated to this unit in the type section in Olequa Creek. The uppermost unit consists of 150 m of deeper marine laminated siltstone, subordinate finegrained and thin-bedded turbidites, thick amalgamated submarine-channel sandstone and chaotic mudstone conglomerate, and slump-folded and soft-sediment deformed laminated siltstone intervals. Petrography of lithic-arkosic micaceous sandstones of the McIntosh and Cowlitz formations indicates there was a distant eastern, extrabasinal acid plutonic-metamorphic source for the arkosic component of these sandstones. The predominant quartz, feldspar, and mica constituents of Cowlitz Formation were transported from a distant dissected arc (such as the Idaho Batholith and metamorphic core complexes to the east) through an ancestral Columbia River drainage system. A second, local and active intrabasinal basaltic source (Grays River volcanics) supplied basaltic scoria and lava rock fragments to form volcaniclastic interbeds. Some volcaniclastics were reworked and mixed with the arkosic extrabasinal sediments in the shallow marine and nonmarine environments of units 2 and 3 of the Cowlitz Formation. Explosive calc-alkaline volcanic activity (Northcraft Formation or Goble Volcanics) is also evident in the silicic and pumiceous tuff beds interbedded with coal marsh/swamp strata in units 1 and 3. Paleocurrent directions indicated by crossbedded tidal strata of unit 3 are to the north-northwest and south-southeast as a resultof shore parallel transport and deflection around a proposed growing volcanic edifice of Grays River volcanics to the south and southwest. A very high sedimentation rate of 1.6 m/1,000 years was calculated for the upper part of the Cowlitz Formation (units 3 to 5) using thickness measurement and 39Ar/40Ar age dates from the Cowlitz Formation (i. e., from tuff in unit 3) and the easternmost locality in the unconformably overlying Grays River volcanics at Bebe Mountain. The large influx of sediment deposited over a relatively short time period was accommodated by this rapidly subsiding forearc basin. In this study area, subaerial flows of the Grays River volcanics locally unconformably overlie the Cowlitz Formation. A 38.9± 0.1 Ma 39Ar/40Ar age date from a tuff bed in unit 3 of the underlying Cowlitz Formation (Irving et al., 1996) and three 39Ar/40Ar age dates of 38.640.40 (south Abernathy Mtn.), 37.44±0.45 (west Bebe Mtn.), and 36.85 ± 0.46 Ma (east Bebe Mtn.) from the overlying Grays River volcanics bracket the timing of this regional unconformity. Additionally, field mapping (this study) and drill hole data supplied by Weyerhaeuser Company (Pauli, written communications) show there is a valley-fill unit at the base of the Grays River volcanics exposed on the surface and in the subsurface, respectively. These data confirm the volcanic- and tectonically-controlled unconformable relationship of the Cowlitz Formation to the overlying the Grays River volcanics. The Cowlitz Formation is in disconformable contact (a tectonically forced sequence boundary) with an overlying second, younger lowstand valley-fill unit (Toutle Formation unit A) recognized in this study along Olequa Creek. The 265-m thick, newly discovered, Toutle Formation in this area is subdivided into three informal units: (1) a basal incised, non-marine valley-fill sequence (unit A), (2) a marginal marine (estuarine or nearshore) sequence (unit B), and (3) an upper fluvial sequence (unit C). A 31.9 ± 0.4Ma 39Ar/40Ar date from a homblende-bearing pumiceous lapilli tuff in unit A indicates that the Toutle Formation is a time equivalent of the upper fluvial member of the Oligocene type Toutle Formation and the middle part of the Lincoln Creek Formation far from the center of the forearc basin to the west. Unit C of the Toutle Formation grades upward into the overlying deeper marine tuffaceous siltstone of the Lincoln Creek Formation. Deformation in this area resulted from two plate tectonic events: (1) latest middle Eocene highly oblique subduction that resulted in short-lived, normal faulting and intrusion of Grays River basalt dikes along small faults and (2) rapid post mid-Miocene oblique subduction that formed northeast-trending dextral and northwest-trending sinistral conjugate faults and broad regional compressional folding throughout southwest Washington. The broad open Arkansas anticline that trends northwest-southeast between Bebe and Abernathy mountains is an eastward extension of the Willapa Hills basement uplift to the west and is extensively cut by northeast and northwest trending faults (Plate I). This compressional event deformed both the Cowlitz Formation and the overlying Grays River volcanics. A similar structural pattern recognized in regional field mapping by Wells (1981) indicates this folding event also deformed mid-Miocene volcanic and sedimentary unit (i.e., Astoria Formation and Columbia River basalts). Reservoir quality of the Cowlitz and upper McIntosh formations micaceous lithicarkosic sandstones is good. These sandstones are clean, highly friable and porous except where carbonate and smectite clay rim cements formed in the lithic arkose. Unit 5 siltstone could act as a cap rock in the subsurface and the 1- to 10-rn thick coals could be a source for natural gas. The McIntosh marine siltstone is another possible source for gas and the micaceous arkosic sandstone in the upper McIntosh is a potential reservoir. Stratigraphic pinchouts and normal and wrench fault traps are similar to the Mist gas field of northwest Oregon.

Book excerpt: The middle to upper Eocene Tillamook Volcanics form the basement in the Rock Creek - Rocky Point area. These tholeiitic to alkalic basalts, basaltic andesites, and andesites were erupted as shield volcanoes seaward of the strandline ontop of an older deep-marine mudstone unit (Yamhill Formation) and an accreted portion of oceanic seafloor (lower Eocene Siletz River Volcanics). The subaerial flows are predominantly aphyric with subordinate plagioclase-augite porphyritic flows with pilotaxitic texture. The overlying Hamlet formation (informal) is composed of three members which document a marine transgression over subsiding islands of Tilamook Volcanics in the middle to late Eocene. The stratigraphically lowest Roy Creek member is composed of basaltic boulder to cobble conglomerate grading upward into fossiliferous pebbly basaltic sandstone deposited around sea stacks and along a high-energy rocky coastline composed of Tillamook Volcanics. Continued subsidence and transgression resulted in deposition of the Sunset Highway member of the Hamlet formation, which conformably overlies the Roy Creek member. The Sunset Highway member consists of interbedded micaceous arkosic sandstone and siltstone with rare basaltic grit beds occurring near the top of the member. Molluscan fauna, faint low-angle cross-bedding, parallel laminations and bioturbation in these sandstones are interpreted to represent deposition in a high-energy inner shelf environment. The upper Narizian (upper Eocene) Sweet Home Creek member conformably overlies the Sunset Highway member in western Columbia and eastern Clatsop counties and is composed of two lithofacies. The dominant lower facies consists of micromicaceous and carbonaceous silty mudstone which contains abundant Foraniinifera indicative of outer neritic to tipper bathyal water depths. Thin-bedded micaceous arkosic turbidite sandstones in nested channels of the upper facies are locally present near the top of the unit and represent deposits of a channelized shelf-slope break. Abrupt sea level regression coupled with increased sedimentation rates due to tectonic unroofing in source areas in Idaho and Washington resulted in abrupt shallowing of sedimentation before deposition of the overlying Cowlitz Formation (C & W sandstone member). The C & W sandstone in cores from the Mist Gas Field and outcrops in the Rock Creek - Rocky Point area in Columbia County consists of massive to hummocky bedded sandstone with some bioturbated siltstone and coal formed in a delta front complex ranging from brackish-water swamps to storm-wave-dominated lower shoreface environments. Sandstone onlaps basement highs of Tillamook Volcanics (Nehalem arch), resulting in a complicated facies geometry with some intrabasinal basaltic detritus. Sedimentary structures, statistical grain size analysis, and lithofacies associations suggest that strong wave processes reworked the delta front sands during a transgression at the seaward edge of the system. Thickening-upward and shallowing-upward sequences record periods of westward deltaic progradation and increasing storm-wave energy. C & W gas reservoirs consist of well-sorted, friable, fine-grained arkose to lithic arkose. Sandstone reservoir porosity and permeability average 31% and 1200 md, respectively. Porosity is dominated by primary intergranular pores which have been reduced by (1) compaction of ductile grains, (2) formation of minor mixed-layer clay rim cement, sparry calcite cement and authigenic pyrite, and (3) late stage precipitation of plagioclase, K-feldspar, and quartz overgrowths. However, partial dissolution of plagiociase feldspar has created some secondary porosity. Although arkosic sandstones have high porosities and correspondingly high permeabilities, chioritic cement in volcaniclastic-rich sandstones significantly reduces permeability without concomitant reduction in porosity. The Cole Mountain basalt (informal) locally intnides and overlies the Cowlitz Formation. These basalts to basaltic andesites have calc-alkaline affinities and consist of hypabyssal sills, submarine lava flows, and local peperites which are lithologically, chemically, and petrographically distinct from the slightly older Tillamook Volcanics. The uppermost Narizian to Refugian (latest Eocene) Keasey Formation unconfonnably overlies the Cowlitz Formation in the study area. Volcanic and glauconitic sandstones at the base of the Keasey Formation mark the unconformity and reflect a period of slow sedimentation under slightly reducing conditions. The Keasey Formation predominantly consists of stractureless, tuffaceous fossiliferous mudstone deposited by hemipelagic sedimentation on the middle to upper slope. The informal Miocene Ivy Creek formation locally disconformably overlies the Keasey Formation in the study area. The fluvially deposited Ivy Creek formation consists of a friable upper trough cross-bedded pebbly sand fades which overlies 9 m of blue organic-rich overbank clay. Local pebbly grits in matrix-support with buried flow-oriented rooted tree stems suggest that some debris flows entered the fluvial system from surrounding highlands. The unit may correspond to the middle Miocene Scappoose Formation. Northwest-trending down-to-the-northeast high-angle faults, some with oblique offset, and a subordinate set of older east-trending faults are the dominant structural features of the Rock Creek - Rocky Point area. The faulting produces a dissected structural high or upthrown basement block of middle to upper Eocene Tillamook Volcanics. Upper Eocene sedimentary units flank the north and south sides with occasional perched sedimentary outliers along the volcanic crest. Although source rock evaluations from this study indicate that the upper Eocene samples are thermally immature, it is possible that thermogenic "thy" gas at Mist migrated updip from more deeply buried Cowlitz shales and coals or equivalent Eocene strata in the adjacent Tualatin and Astoria basins.

Book excerpt: A composite 732-rn thick section in Germany Creek of middle Eocene upper McIntosh and lower Cowlitz Formations, as well as the lower Grays River Volcanics, was studied using bio-, magneto- and lithostratigraphy to construct a sequence stratigraphic framework and assess hydrocarbon exploration potential. The upper McIntosh Formation forms a complete 3rd order depositional cycle that includes shallow marine, tide- and wave-dominated sandstones (upper McIntosh sandstone member) and overlying bathyal to outer-shelf siltstone (upper Mcintosh siltsone member). The upper McIntosh Formation coffelates to Chrons C19r (41.5 -42.5 Ma) and lower Chron 19n (41.5-41.2 Ma). A 31 order sequence boundary straddling Chron 19n (41.2-41.5 Ma) shows truncation of the highstand upper McIntosh siltstone by prograding lowstand shoreface parasequences of the lower Cowlitz Formation. The overlying (300 m thick) shoreface transgressive (TST) and highstand system tracts (HST) of the Cowlitz Formation range in age from 41.5-41.2 Ma to 39.35 ±0.36 Ma. The Cowlitz Formation HST of the study area chronostratigraphically correlates to the reservoir Clark arid Wilson sandstone member of the Mist Gas Field Cowlitz Formation and to informal unit 1A and lower unit lB of the type-Cowlitz Formation, southwest Washington. The Grays River Volcanics of the study area are subdivided by an intraformational unconformity defining the upper (~150-m thick; 38.6-36.8 Ma) and lower (1250-m thick; 40.1-39 Ma) Grays River Volcanics subunits. Two subalkaline olivine- augite tholeiitic basalt flows of the lower Grays River Volcanics conformably overlying the Cowlitz Formation in Germany Creek were 40Ar/39Ar dated at 40.09 ±0.34 Ma and 39.35 ±0.36 Ma. The tholeiitic upper Grays River basalt unconformably overlies the lower Grays River Volcanics and the Cowlitz Formation. Numerous sub-parallel, northeast and minor northwest trending Grays River dikes (40Ar/39Ar dated at 39.98 ±0.29 and 39.56 ±0.41 Ma) attest to extension of the study area during the eruption of the Grays River Volcanics. The Oligocene Lincoln Creek Formation (~70m) consists of bioturbated tuffaceous siltstone and interbedded silty sandstone with casts and molds of articulated mollusks. Geochemistry, normal polarity, and dikytaxitic texture of the 50-60 m thick Grande Ronde basalt are indicative of the Sentinel Bluffs unit (15.6 Ma) (Columbia River Basalt Group). The Arkansas Anticline and three fault sets: (1) north-northwest- and (2) northwest-trending dextral oblique-slip faults, and (3) subordinate northeast-trending conjugate sinistral oblique-slip faults are related to two periods of deformation. They are: (1) dextral transtension resulting in horst and graben style faulting, beginning 40-39.5 Ma and terminating prior to the eruption of the upper Grays River volcanics (38.6 Ma); (2) post-middle Miocene period of dextral transpression, including dextral reactivation of normal faults and associated broad regional northwest-trending folding (e.g. Arkansas Anticline). Small normal fault block similar to the Mist Gas Field provide structural traps throughout southwest Washington. Petrography of micaceous lithic arkoses of the upper McIntosh sandstone and Cowlitz Formation indicates reservoir-quality sandstones with an estimated porosity of 16-19%. The most likely hydrocarbon exploration play involves the subtidal to shoreface upper McIntosh Formation sandstone member.
