This book was released on 2019-09-09 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indispensable resource for investigating the history of the Byzantine Empire, this book provides a comprehensive summary of its overall development as well as its legacy in the modern world. The existence and development of Byzantium covers more than a millennium and coincides with one of the darkest periods of European history. Unfortunately, the Empire's achievements and brightest moments remain largely unknown except to Byzantine scholars. Through reference entries and primary source documents, this encyclopedia provides essential information about the Byzantine Empire from the reign of Diocletian to the Fall of Constantinople. The reference entries are grouped in eight topical sections on the most significant aspects of the history of the Byzantine Empire. These sections include individuals, key events, key places, the military, objects and artifacts, administration and organization, government and politics, and groups and organizations. Each section begins with an overview essay and contains approximately thirty entries on carefully selected topics. The entries conclude with suggestions for further reading along with cross-references., A selection of primary source documents gives readers first-hand accounts of the Byzantine world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of two in a new, updated edition of the 2012 book Playing at the World, which charts the vast and complex history of role-playing games. This new edition of Playing at the World is the first of two volumes that update the 720-page original tome of the same name from 2012. This first volume is The Invention of Dungeons & Dragons, which explores the publication of that iconic game. (The second volume is The Three Pillars of Role-Playing Games, a deeper dive into the history of the setting, system, and character of D & D.) In this first volume, Jon Peterson distills the story of how the wargaming clubs and fanzines circulating around the upper Midwest in the 1970s culminated in Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson’s seminal role-playing game, D & D. It augments the research of the original editions with new insights into the crucial period in 1972–3 when D & D began to take shape. Drawing from primary sources ranging from eighteenth-century strategists to modern hobbyists, Playing at the World explores the origins of wargames and roleplaying through the history of conflict simulations and the eccentric characters who drove the creation of a signature cultural innovation in the late twentieth century. Filled with unparalleled archival research (from obscure fanzines to letters, drafts, and other ephemera), this new edition of Playing at the World is the ultimate geek’s guide to the original RPG. As such, it is an indispensable resource for academics and game fans exploring the origins of the hobby.

Book Synopsis Opening Strategy by : Richard Whittington
Download or read book Opening Strategy written by Richard Whittington and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategy is becoming more 'open' - more transparent and more inclusive. Opening Strategy tells the story of how corporate strategists and strategy consultants have worked since the middle of the last century to open up the strategy process. First strategic planning, then strategic management, and now 'open strategy' have all brought more people into the strategy process and provided more strategic information, for the benefit of both business and society at large. Informed by interviews with corporate strategists and consultants at leading firms such as General Electric and McKinsey & Co, and drawing on the historical archives of strategy's pioneers, this book provides vivid insights into the trials and tribulations of practice change in the strategy profession. Above all, it stresses the hard work of the little recognized and sometimes eccentric individuals who have been leaders in practice change. By building on a wide range of illustrations, covering both successes and failures, the book draws out general lessons for practice innovation in strategy. Those studying the topic will be able to set standard strategy techniques in historical and social context and develop new areas for investigation, while practising executives and consultants should gain a sense of how to innovate in strategy - and how not to.
Book Synopsis The epistrategos in Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt by : J. David Thomas
Download or read book The epistrategos in Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt written by J. David Thomas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is over sixty years since the office of epistrategos in Roman Egypt was subjected to a detailed examination and in the interverring years a great deal of new papyrological and epigraphic material has come to light. It was my original intention to write a study of the office in this period with, by way of introduction, a brief sketch of the epistrategos in Ptolemaic Egypt. It soon became apparent, however, that a much more fundamental study of the Ptolemaic epistrategos was desirable, which would attempt to answer, or at least to clarify, the various problems connected with the office in this period. In this book I have tried to present a comprehensive up-to-date picture of our knowledge of the Ptolemaic epistrategos. I am far from claiming to have successfully answered all the questions raised -in particular the fundamental problern of the nature of the office remains an enigm- but I hope that I have at any rate provided a basis on which others can build. As the Ptolemaic and Roman epistrategoi did not have a great deal in common apart from their titles, an examination of the office falls naturally into two parts. It therefore seemed not inappropriate to publish separately the first half of this work dealing with the Ptolemaic epistrategos, without waiting for the completion of the second part which will deal with the Roman epistrategos. It is hoped that this second part will follow without undue delay.
Book Synopsis The League of the Aitolians by : John D. Grainger
Download or read book The League of the Aitolians written by John D. Grainger and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Aitolians have had a bad press, regarded as pirates and brigands, and their state as a pirate state built on terrorist tactics. This book treats them as what they really were, a normal Hellenistic state. They constructed an original and successful polity which provided peace and prosperity for its inhabitants, and played a major part in Greek history for a century and a half. The approach is chronological, beginning with the origin and formation of the league and its early expansion, and then dealing with its long duel with Macedon, and concluding with its destruction by Rome. This is the first full account of the history of the league which approaches it as an independent state rather than as the enemy of other states and peoples. It complements the standard histories of the other Hellenistic states.
