Damit einhergehend wandelt sich die Personalentwicklung von der operativen, unterstützenden Servicefunktion für alle Unternehmensbereiche zu einer strategischen Personalentwicklung, die sich an der Unternehmensstrategie orientiert. Das bedeutet, dass alle Personalentwicklungsinstrumente an der Unternehmensstrategie ausgerichtet werden und die Personalentwicklung als gleichberechtigter Partner die anderen Organisationseinheiten im Unternehmen bei der Erreichung ihrer strategischen Vorgaben unterstützt. Durch diese strategisch ausgerichtete Unterstützung der anderen Organisationseinheiten leistet die strategische Personalentwicklung einen Beitrag zum Erfolg eines Unternehmens. Die folgende Arbeit untersucht die Bedeutung der strategischen Personal- und Mitarbeiterentwicklung und geht weiterhin auf deren Rolle für den Unternehmenserfolg ein. Der erste Teil gibt einen zusammenfassenden Überblick über die theoretischen Grundlagen der strategischen Personalentwicklung und über deren Ablauf als Prozess. Er befasst sich mit den für diese Arbeit notwendigen begrifflichen Bestimmungen und der Abgrenzung der strategischen von der operativen Personalentwicklung. Weiterhin wird die geschichtliche Entwicklung der Personalentwicklung von den Anfängen in den 70er Jahren bis zum Status quo untersucht. Im zentralen Teil dieser Schrift werden die strategischen Personal- und Mitarbeiterentwicklungs-Instrumente Talent-, Kompetenz-, Performance und Retention-Management betrachtet.
