Download or read book Alaska North Slope National Energy Strategy Initiative: Analysis of Five Undeveloped Fields written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US Department of Energy was directed in the National Energy Strategy to establish a federal interagency task force to identify specific technical and regulatory barriers to the development of five undeveloped North Slope Alaska fields and make recommendations for their resolution. The five fields are West Sak, Point Thomson, Gwydyr Bay, Seal Island/Northstar, and Sandpiper Island. Analysis of environmental, regulatory, technical, and economic information, and data relating to the development potential of the five fields leads to the following conclusions: Development of the five fields would result in an estimated total of 1,055 million barrels of oil and 4.4 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and total investment of $9.4 billion in 1992 dollars. It appears that all five of the fields will remain economically marginal developments unless there is significant improvement in world oil prices. Costs of regulatory compliance and mitigation, and costs to reduce or maintain environmental impacts at acceptable levels influence project investments and operating costs and must be considered in the development decision making process. The development of three of the fields (West Sak, Point Thomson, and Gwydyr Bay) that are marginally feasible would have an impact on North Slope production over the period from about 2000 to 2014 but cannot replace the decline in Prudhoe Bay Unit production or maintain the operation of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) beyond about 2014 with the assumption that the TAPS will shut down when production declines to the range of 400 to 200 thousand barrels of oil/day. Recoverable reserves left in the ground in the currently producing fields and soon to be developed fields, Niakuk and Point McIntyre, would range from 1 billion to 500 million barrels of oil corresponding to the time period of 2008 to 2014 based on the TAPS shutdown assumption.

Book Synopsis Arctic Alaska's Role in Future United States Energy Independence by : Meg Sherval
Download or read book Arctic Alaska's Role in Future United States Energy Independence written by Meg Sherval and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, Arctic Alaska has provided US mainland states with plentiful oil supplies. As reserves in the Prudhoe Bay fields decrease, however, the USA has been forced to consider new options to guarantee the nation's energy security. While debates continue to rage about its reliance on foreign oil, increased prices, consumption levels and climate change, the USA is now contemplating whether predicted new discoveries might actually allow it to become an exporter, rather than importer of oil and gas in the near future. This paper considers the role Arctic Alaska might play in helping secure future US energy security and independence. It also considers what other options exist for securing the State of Alaska's own future post-Prudhoe Bay.

This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes practical energy management strategies that could help communities in southeast Alaska move closer to energy independence while utilizing local resources more effectively. Our analysis focuses primarily on Sitka, Alaska, yet could be relevant to other communities having similar energy structures that rely primarily on hydroelectric power. We consider how community energy capacity and locally abundant resources can help communities move toward energy independence. Our recommendations focus on energy conservation, appropriately scaled renewable energy project development, and adoption of new technologies, including electric vehicles. We also identify key stakeholder elements that could be important for successful collaborative projects in southeast Alaska. Last, we consider broader implications for southeast Alaska, including communities having energy resources different from those of Sitka.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains the final technical analysis of the Project Independence Interagency Natural Gas Task Force chaired by the Federal Power Commission. The task force was formed in April 1974 to provide estimates for the Project Independence Blueprint of the potential production capabilities of the natural gas industry and the resources necessary to achieve these levels of production. The task force evaluated two alternative strategies. The first was "business-as-usual," which assumed the continuation of all current policies that could affect levels of natural gas production. The second strategy, "accelerated demand," assumed selected changes in policies or practices that would permit a greater expansion of potential production. The data support from the Natural Gas Task Force, together with estimates of resource availability, conservation and demand forecasts served as input into the Project Independence Blueprint analysis. This report is not a production or price forecast and does not represent policy or program recommendations of the Federal Energy Administration or of the other participating agencies

Book excerpt: This book explores the land cover, renewable energy and natural gas issues facing Alaska today. The land surface of Alaska is sparsely populated and the impacts from humans are far less extensive when compared to the contiguous United States. A brief survey of renewable energy technologies applicable to Alaska's climate, latitude, geography, and geology is also discussed as are Alaska's natural renewable energy resources and which renewable energy technologies would be most productive. This book also provides a review of the history of efforts to develop an Alaskan natural gas pipeline, including project status, recent developments, and the current project outlook.
