Book excerpt: A comparison and analysis of existing texts whose focus was jazz and contemporary vocal ensemble techniques, in combination with the information gathered from interviews, as well as the author2s personal teaching and professional experience as a jazz vocal artist, group singer, and jazz vocal ensemble director, served as the basis for developing strategies for a jazz and contemporary vocal ensemble sound. The major elements found to be the most critical for inclusion in sequence include: commonalities and differences, sound system and vocal production, ballad interpretation, swing interpretation, and contemporary interpretation. It is the author2s intention to design an easy-to-follow guideline for the traditional choral director whose desire is to develop a jazz vocal ensemble within the choral program. The strategies presented are intended to introduce basic concepts of vocal production and style that are deemed relevant and idiomatic for the jazz and contemporary vocal ensemble. A compact disc is also included, demonstrating the written examples. A series of interviews were also conducted with Professor Larry Lapin (University of Miami), Dr. Stephen Zegree (Western Michigan University), Kerry Marsh (Sacramento State University), Janis Seigel (Manhattan Transfer), Lauren Kinhan (New York Voices), Michelle Amato (Yanni/Disney/studio singer), and Julia Dollison (Down Beat Jazz Vocal Winner).

Book excerpt: For decades, scholars in the field of music education have recognized the need for growth and change in our approach to teaching music, yet despite these calls for change, the music education curriculum today remains remarkably similar to that of a century ago. Points of Disruption in the Music Education Curriculum, Volume 2: Individual Changes is one of two volumes that bring together applied suggestions, analyses, and best practices for disrupting cycles of replication in the curriculum of K-12 and collegiate music education programs in the United States and beyond, considering disruption as a force for positive change. Identifying specific strategies for interrupting or reimagining traditional practices, the contributors provide music teachers and music educators with a variety of potential practical approaches to creating changes that foster a better musical education at all levels of the curriculum. This second volume focuses on changes that can be implemented by individual educators, covering topics including transcultural approaches, student-teacher power relations, methods courses, integrated music education, and administrator support of teacher agency, student–teacher power relations, and reimagining music education. Bringing together 6 thought-provoking chapters, this book offers a diverse set of concrete strategies that will be useful to a wide range of music education stakeholders, including teachers, administrators, and curriculum designers.

Book excerpt: Singers today are often asked to perform in a variety of styles and genres, causing the choral teacher to be a specialist in multiple disciplines including areas such as vocal pedagogy, music history and ethnomusicology. Within the traditional choral canon, choral teachers are expected to teach authentic performance practice that incorporates changes in vocal production amongst varying style periods from Renaissance to contemporary choral music. Furthermore, over the last decade there has been a tendency for choral directors to program more multicultural music that requires an understanding of cultural ideals and vocal qualities. This diverse repertoire requires a different vocal approach than the standard western classical tradition. An added challenge is students' desire to sing contemporary commercial music (CCM), yet most teachers are not being trained in vocal technique associated with CCM. Since choral singers are asked to create a variety of vocal qualities and switch between those qualities within a single performance, teachers should be trained to utilize a multifaceted approach to developing vocal technique. However research shows that there is a significant lack of training in the areas of CCM. This document examines the correlation between bel canto and contemporary vocal technique through teaching the main tenets of breath, onset, and resonance. These tenets are examined and explored in relation to bel canto scholarship, modern vocal science, and the Estill Voice Training System (EVTS[superscript]TM). By developing a pathway between these styles teachers enhance their teaching of diverse repertoire without having to learn an entirely new pedagogy. Exploratory strategies and vocal exercises for developing a more multifaceted approach to teaching vocal technique are discussed throughout this document in conjunction with the warm-up process and individual instruction within the group ensemble setting. These exploratory exercises can be added to the teacher's current rehearsal process to enhance understanding of vocal technique associated with all CCM.

Book excerpt: Countless available arrangements exist for jazz bands and traditional choirs, but the field of publicly available vocal jazz ensemble arrangements is still emerging. Educators directing vocal jazz ensembles may be drawn to creating their own arrangements when they want their ensembles to perform songs for which there are no publicly available arrangements, or when published arrangements do not fit the needs of their ensemble. However, educators without a background in arranging may be at a loss for where, or how, to begin. Scholarship on arranging music for jazz choirs is limited, leaving educators wishing to improve their arranging skills scant resources. The purpose of this thesis is to introduce concepts and considerations for arranging music for vocal jazz ensembles, with specific attention to the process itself and the needs of the ensemble that will perform the chart. Chapters two and three include strategies for arranging, from both print sources and interviews with experts in the field of vocal jazz arranging. This thesis culminates with recommendations for educators new to this field to begin writing their own arrangements, while seeking guidance from experienced arrangers and sources found in this document.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to explore instructional strategies and participation concerns regarding vocal jazz ensembles according to high school choral directors in Illinois who lead their schools’ vocal jazz programs. High school choir directors without jazz experience often recognize the need to expand their performance and pedagogical abilities in jazz and access to vocal jazz repertory; however, professional development opportunities in Illinois’ music education organization have yet to offer guidance. This leaves choral directors without jazz experience little insight on how to familiarize themselves with jazz styles, pertinent pedagogical ideas, and how to apply available resources towards the formation of vocal jazz ensembles. Literature that generally compares and contrasts choral and vocal jazz ensemble instruction exists; however, research has yet to extrapolate concepts applicable to disparate teaching contexts of high school choral programs in Illinois. This study surveys the perspectives of seventy-one choral and vocal jazz directors in various high school teaching contexts in Illinois to provide high school choral directors without vocal jazz programs insight regarding how to approach vocal jazz instruction in their choral programs, regardless of their jazz backgrounds, districts’ socio-economic context, and schools’ musical traditions. Since diversification of musical experience remains a growing initiative in music education, this study’s findings regarding pedagogy and resource application will provide directors with insight on how to expand their curricular explorations within and beyond typical choral programming. Directors would benefit from this insight, regardless of their extant musical-stylistic backgrounds and teaching contexts.
