This book was released on 2012-01-27 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for the strategic planner who, if they do their job right, makes it possible for the rest of us to stay employed. Their ability to clearly envision the future of the marketplace, the competition and the enterprise means the difference between long term success and failure. The strategic planner's skill is vital and their decisions may be of broader consequence than those of most others in the organization. Their ability to put all this information into a concise, clear, energizing, action oriented Vision Statement can make the difference between organizational success or failure over the long term. The purpose of this book is to pass along the result of a series of business and personal experiences and the teachings and guidance of some great mentors. Those experiences and mentors combined over time to provide a set of skills and knowledge about how to develop simple, clear information technology strategic plans supporting long term enterprise objectives. Along the way I've developed a set of rules that are useful for strategic planners and leaders. This book presents a streamlined planning tool for the information technology strategic planner that can be used effectively in any type of organization whether it is a corporation, non-profit or government enterprise. Through a series of logical steps it requires the technology planner to first understand the vision, infrastructure and operation of the enterprise they are supporting. Using this information a complementary vision and infrastructure are developed for the IT group supporting the enterprise. The desired objective is an IT plan that not only supports, but also enhances, the ability of the enterprise to achieve its business or competitive objectives. An excellent tool that results is a one page Guiding Document that states in clear terms the Strategic Target, the Benefits provided by the Strategic Plan, and the Action Items that will be taken by the team to achieve those Benefits. This planning methodology has successfully been used by the author for more than a decade.

Book excerpt: Edited by one of the best-known and most widely respected figures in the field, "Planning for Information Systems" is a comprehensive, single source overview of the myriad ideas and processes that are identified with IS planning. While many chapters deal with high level strategic planning, the book gives equal attention to on-the-ground planning issues.Part I, 'Key Concepts of IS Planning', focuses on how IS planning has evolved over the years; business-IS strategic alignment; and the role of dynamic organizational capabilities in leveraging IS competencies. Part II, 'The Organizational IS Planning Process,' describes IS planning in terms of critical success factors and includes a knowledge-based view of IS planning; a practical assessment of strategic alignment; the IT budgeting process; the search for an optimal level of IS strategic planning; and the role of organizational learning in IS planning.Part III, 'IS Investment Planning', deals with predicting the value that an IS project may have; a 'rational expectations' approach to assessing project payoffs; assessing the social costs and benefits of projects; an options-based approach to managing project risks; planning for project teams; and the moderating effects of coordinated planning. Part IV, 'Goals and Outcomes of IS Planning', considers information strategy as a goal and/or outcome of IS planning; IT infrastructure as a goal or outcome; competitive advantage as a goal or outcome; e-process partnership chains; and planning successful Internet-based projects.

Book excerpt: Survey and study background In an effort to gain some answers on the 1ST capital investment (project selection) decision criteria used in practice, a survey was undertaken in 1990 of 80 American, British, Australian and New Zealand companies. A one-page survey form was used that provided 15 possible 1ST investment criteria, a means of indicating whether they are used or not, the percentage of projects to which each criterion is applied, and an overall ranking in terms of total project value for each criterion. The criteria are shown in Table 2.1. The criteria are categorized into financial, management, and development criteria. They were developed, first, through interviews with some 20 chief information officers (CIOs) in Britain and the United States. These CIOs were questioned on what criteria their organizations use in selecting 1ST investment projects, with the aim of developing a full list of the criteria used in practice. Secondly, the criteria and the form were tested and refined in a pilot study with some 12 companies. The criteria used in the survey and listed in Table 2.1 are primary level criteria.
