Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book continues from author’s first SMA publication in 2018 (also by Springer) and discusses the new roles of SMA in the new network economy. Emerging digital technologies have revolutionized the business world with groundbreaking rules and innovative business models. New knowledge and information technologies have inspired new business ideas and created more information platforms at a lower cost, yet highly efficient in the market. The new business transformation also encourages more inter-organizational cooperation to cope with rapid changes. All these novelties add challenges to corporate individuals in managing businesses beyond their organizations, in particular financial professionals (e.g., CFO) who are experts in the team. Therefore, SMA is assigned a new role in the new network economy. Similarly, SMA calls for major updates and revisions. This urges author to write this book to meet the new demand. The author has selected important topics that are particularly pertinent to the new Internet economy. These topics include how to make decisions under business uncertainty, how to value businesses in general, Internet stocks and intangible assets in particular. Business collaboration and integration are usual means to acquire synergy value. How does SMA help deliver the best results? How are business models and information platforms built as sense-making revenue models, even though these platforms never charge for services? How is market power and brand value measured? How does trust supplement control in new network organizations? Finally, how is value created, captured, and allocated in a fair manner? The book goes through detailed examinations of each topic with cases, examples, and illustrations as required.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory and practice of management accounting should be seen within the context of varieties of global capitalism, to appreciate its role as a 'calculative technology of capitalism' which is practiced on factory floors, corporate boards, computer networks, spreadsheets, and so forth. This new textbook is the first to introduce the field from a rounded social science perspective. Strategizing Management Accounting offers a theoretical discussion on management accounting’s strategic orientation by accommodating two interrelated lines of analyses, from historical and contemporary perspectives. The book illustrates how 'new management accounting' has evolved into the form in which it exists today in its neoliberal context and how those new management accounting practices have become manifestos for the managers, as calculative technologies of decision making, performance management, control, corporate governance, as well as global governance, and development within various forms of organizations across the globe. Each chapter draws on Foucauldian analysis of biopolitics explaining how neoliberal market logic informs a set of strategies and mechanisms through which various social entities and discourses are made governable by considering them as biopolitical entities of global governance. Written by two recognized accounting experts, this book is vital reading for all students of management accounting and will also be a useful supplementary resource for those wanting to understand and research accounting's vital role in contemporary society.

Packed full of pedagogical features, including mini-cases, learning outcomes, key terms, article summaries, key concept boxes, real-world cases, chapter summaries and further reading suggestions and resources, it is clear and accessibly written, covering all the major emerging topics in management accounting theory. Discussing technical developments in management accounting from conventional cost accounting to contemporary strategic management accounting and beyond, in four parts it: shows how conventional cost accounting techniques and management control models evolved in line with the development of mass production and bureaucracy explores how recent developments such as customer and strategic orientations in business, flexible manufacturing, post-bureaucracy, network and virtual organizational technologies implicate in management accounting provides a number of alternative theories through which the transition of management accounting from mechanistic to post-mechanistic approaches can be explained – elaborating both rational and interpretive/critical theories. This excellent text meets a desperate need for an advanced management accounting textbook that incorporates theory and practice and is accessible and engaging for all those studying in this challenging area.

Edward Freeman's Strategic Management: A Stakeholder Approach, this work assembles a collection of contributions by the most influential and widely cited scholars working in the area of stakeholder scholarship today. The analyses collected here comment on the impact Freeman's book - and stakeholder theory more generally - has had upon the fields of management and organizational ethics. This study also includes original responses from Freeman himself. As the conversation about stakeholders hits its academic and popular stride, this timely volume provides both a retrospective of stakeholder theory's history as well as a guide to the questions that are likely to emerge during the next quarter century, providing a new foundation for future theory and practice. This volume will be an indispensible resource for any serious scholar working in the area of stakeholder theory. Additionally, because the language of managing stakeholder relationships is becoming increasingly popular, practicing executives and NGO members will find this an exceptional and informative reference.

Book excerpt: The work deals with the increasing penetration of IT that corporations have to deal with, and that has particular impacts on the research on strategic management accounting. This book serves as an instruction for the practitioner to select particular controlling tools for a specific purpose. It provides a valid selection of common software tools to support the managerial decision-making process such as activity-based costing and balanced scorecard software including dashboard solutions. The software has been evaluated by deriving necessary information requirements from theory which in a second step have been tested in the software itself providing an evaluation of over 40 software programs and over 90 tools. To conduct the evaluation, manuals representing the software capabilities have been analysed and a conjoint measurement was used to benchmark different software programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether business strategy influences strategic management accounting (SMA) usage. Business strategy has been operationalized through strategic pattern, mission and positioning.Design/methodology/approach - The study is based on an internet questionnaire survey of Italian companies. Multiple regression analysis is used to test the impact of strategic variables (pattern, mission and positioning) on SMA usage. Company size is included as control variable.Findings - Several SMA techniques appear to be used in Italian companies as they are in other countries investigated in different studies. Customer Accounting, Competitive Position Monitoring, Competitor performance appraisal based on published financial statement and Quality Costing represent the most widely used SMA techniques in the Italian sample. From the regression analysis, both defender-type and cost leader-type of strategy are found to be more willing to use SMA techniques addressing cost information.Research limitations/implications - The issue, common in contingent research, of business strategy definition and operationalization constitutes the main limitation of the paper; in an attempt to restrict its effect, we use three strategic typologies (pattern, mission and positioning) and employ a measurement method used in previous studies. A second issue concerns the definition of SMA techniques. There is no concurred list of SMA techniques in the literature and further discussion is expected in the future.Originality/value - Firstly, empirical evidence is provided to a field (SMA) where empirical research is needed in order to be comparable with traditional management accounting techniques. Secondly, for the first time in SMA studies, a framework is employed that considers all of the three main strategic variables (pattern, mission and positioning) used in management accounting literature. As a result, the loose coupling between SMA techniques and business strategy typologies indicates (with the possible exception of cost related SMA techniques) that the same SMA technique can support different strategic approaches of the company.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management accountants should have a key role to play in developing and executing pricing strategy and policy. However, their historical focus on costing and operations means that their potential as business partners with marketing and sales professionals is easily overlooked. This book focuses on how management accountants can help key stakeholders in the formulation and execution of pricing policy and, conversely, on showing managers responsible for pricing decisions how they could be helped by management accountants. It equips management accountants with a unique overview of pricing theory, the practical, quantitative techniques they should know and the value they can bring to the pricing function. The book analyses segmentation, value to customer, price-value maps, segmental pricing, product differentiation and dynamic pricing, with traditional economic theory, showing how these ideas have implications for management accountants and the value that they can bring to the business. Differences in customer value have been integral to economic theory for decades and price discrimination, the technique of charging different prices to different customers for the same or similar goods, is well-established. This observation provides the central core of this book. The methods of price discrimination are set out in detail, showing how management accountants can bring their analytical skills to bear in helping executives and pricing professionals take advantage of differences in customer valuation to improve profits. The book provides a thorough overview of the field and offers a good introduction for researchers and students. Equally, the book shows managers, marketers and pricing professionals how management accountants can assist them in delivering better pricing practice.
