The study captured 82 respondents as research sample to a case study of Output Performance - Based Contracts (OPRCs) for the Construction and Maintenance of Gravel Roads in Zambia. Purposive sampling was used as most research participants were drawn from second generation OPRCs that were active between 2009 and 2014. The study was aimed at devising new Construction and Maintenance Contract methods for gravel roads that are based on “Lean Thinking and Value Management” philosophies in Zambia. The established epistemological background to the study is that most of the Zambian road network is of gravel or earth standards and is therefore, imperative that they are well maintained to attain desired service levels to properly serve the intended beneficiaries (the road users). The Road Development Agency Annual Report of 2009 indicated that 33,000 Km of the total 40,671 Km core road network, is classified as gravel roads (unpaved) , which are at the moment mostly in a deteriorated state. The study revealed that currently in Zambia, Gravel Road Construction projects are commonly being realised through the use of traditional Contracts such as admeasured; by the use of Bills of Quantities (BOQs), the Lump sum and Cost plus, etc. These are mainly short term form of Contracts which to some extent, lack some components of sustainable maintenance regimes, thereby rendering the Government and other Promoters efforts futile as gravel roads sooner or later deteriorate just after the first rain season upon their construction. This was theoretical perspective which served as driver to the “Research problem”. The study noted that current forms of Contracts did not inspire, aspire and spur the spirit of ownership as the local people were left out in the planning and design stages of gravel road projects. Despite all the attempts made by Government, through the RDA and other implementing Agencies, the Road Construction Industry in general, has failed to get the best value for money through the use of these conventional types of Contracts. One of the reasons for this failure according to Womack and Jones (2003), ‘is that it is hard to define and realise value, this is partly because most Producers [Road Contractors] want to make what they are already making and partly because Customers only know some variant of what they are already getting’.

To overcome the effect of price fluctuations, certain methods or contract clauses are desired to deal with this uncertainty. The main purpose of the price adjustment clauses is to allow the contractors and clients to adjust the increase or decrease in prices. In addition to this, it also encourages competitive bidding. The objective of this research study is to study importance of price adjustment in construction contract and analyzing the response of the different stakeholders in construction contracts regarding FIDIC formula and suggesting for improvement. Similarly, identifying different cost element, weightings and determining contingency is also goal of research so that price adjustment contract administration becomes systematic, equitable and with less ambiguity. Recently, the price fluctuation of construction materials and services in Nepal has become severe and very much unpredictable. Most of the contractors in Construction Industry, especially local contractors, are facing strong challenges during bid process due to the high uncertainty of predicting what would happen during the course of the execution of the project. Based on the above explained fact, the research problem has been addressed in this research by conducting diagnostic survey among ten contracting firms working on ADB project, collecting data with the help of questionnaire, distributed to contractors, consultant, client and conducting desk study on ADB projects, World bank projects, Midhill highway and RIP projects under department of Road whose construction were started after 2014 and construction progress was more than 80 %.

The resulting land-use configurations encompass varying mosaics of tree cover, human settlements and agricultural land units. Meanwhile, global demand for agricultural commodities is at unprecedented levels. The need to feed nine billion people by 2050 in a world of changing food demands is causing increasing agricultural intensification. As such, market-orientated production systems are now increasingly replacing traditional farming practices, but at what cost? The Agrarian Change project, coordinated by the Center for International Forestry Research, explores the conservation, livelihood and food security implications of land-use and agrarian change processes at the landscape scale. This book provides detailed background information on seven multi-functional landscapes in Ethiopia, Cameroon, Indonesia, Nicaragua, Bangladesh, Zambia and Burkina Faso. The focal landscapes were selected as they exhibit various scenarios of changing forest cover, agricultural modification and integration with local and global commodity markets. A standardized research protocol will allow for future comparative analyses between these sites. Each case study chapter provides a comprehensive description of the physical and socioeconomic context of each focal landscape and a structured account of the historical and political drivers of land-use change occurring in the area. Each case study also draws on contemporary information obtained from key informant interviews, focus group discussions and preliminary data collection regarding key topics of interest including: changes in forest cover and dependency on forest products, farming practices, tenure institutions, the role and presence of conservation initiatives, and major economic activities. The follow-on empirical study is already underway in the landscapes described in this book. It examines responses to agrarian change processes at household, farm, village and landscape levels with a focus on poverty levels, food security, dietary diversity and nutrition, agricultural yields, biodiversity, migration and land tenure. This research intends to provide much needed insights into how landscape-scale land-use trajectories manifest in local communities and advance understanding of multi-functional landscapes as socioecological systems.
