Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the ancient Greeks, nature was composed of four elements: air, fire, water and earth. Engineers are continuously faced with the challenges imposed by those elements, when designing bridges and tall buildings to withstand high winds; constructing fire resistant structures, controlling flood and wave forces; minimizing earthquake damage; prevention and control of landslides and a whole range of other natural forces. Natural disasters occurring in the last few years have highlighted the need to achieve more effective and safer designs against extreme natural forces. At the same time, structural projects have become more challenging. Featuring contributions from the First International Conference on Engineering Nature, this book addresses the problems associated in this field and aims to provide solutions on how to resist extreme natural forces. Topics include: Hurricane, Tornadoes and High Winds; Aerodynamic Forces; Fire Induced Forces; Wave Forces and Tsunamis; Landslides and Avalanches; Earthquakes; Volcanic Activities; Bridges and Tall Buildings; Large Roofs and Communication Structures; Underground Structures; Dams and Embankments; Offshore Structures; Industrial Constructions; Coastal and Maritime Structures; Risk Evaluation; Surveying and Monitoring; Risk Prevention; Remediation and Retrofitting and Safety Based Design.

Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the study of an aeroelastic phenomenon of cable supported long span bridges known as flutter, and proposes very innovative design methodologies, such as sensitivity analysis and optimization techniques, already utilized successfully in automobile and aerospace industries. The topic of long-span suspension and cable-stayed bridges is currently of great importance. These types of bridge pose great technical difficulties due to their slenderness and often great dimension. Therefore, these bridges tend to have problems caused by natural forces such as wind loads, some of which we have witnessed in our history, and we are currently seeing a very high incidence of bridge construction to overcome geographical obstacles such as bays, straits, or great estuaries. Therefore, it seems very appropriate to write a book showing the current capability of analysis and design, when up until now, the information could only be found partially in technical articles. This book will be useful for bridge design engineers as well as researchers working in the field. This book only requires previous knowledge of structural finite element models and dynamics, and it is advisable to have some previous knowledge in bridge engineering. Nevertheless, this book is very self-contained in such a way that all the information necessary to understand the theoretical developments is presented without the need of additional bibliography.

Book excerpt: Drought, floods, hurricanes, forest fires, ice storms, blackouts, dwindling fish stocks...what Canadian has not experienced one of these or more, or heard about the “greenhouse” effect, and not wondered what is happening to our climate? Yet most of us have a poor understanding of this extremely important issue, and need better, reliable scientific information. Hard Choices: Climate Change in Canada delivers some hard facts to help us make some of those hard choices. This new collection of essays by leading Canadian scientists, engineers, social scientists, and humanists offers an overview and assessment of climate change and its impacts on Canada from physical, social, technological, economic, political, and ethical / religious perspectives. Interpreting and summarizing the large and complex literatures from each of these disciplines, the book offers a multidisciplinary approach to the challenges we face in Canada. Special attention is given to Canada’s response to the Kyoto Protocol, as well as an assessment of the overall adequacy of Kyoto as a response to the global challenge of climate change. Hard Choices fills a gap in available books which provide readers with reliable information on climate change and its impacts that are specific to Canada. While written for the general reader, it is also well suited for use as an undergraduate text in environmental studies courses.

Book excerpt: This book puts forward a technological system for the construction of subsea tunnel using drilling and blasting method. Taking the water-induced disaster as the core risk, the safety guarantee system for large cross-sectional subsea tunnels is established. The composite grouting technology referred to ground reinforcement and water plugging is established, which breaks through the technical bottleneck of subsea tunnel construction in highly permeable strata. The process control theory based on water inrush mechanism is created, which gets rid of the over-dependence on engineering experience for disaster control of submarine tunnel. An active control waterproof drainage system based on the synergy of reinforcement ring and support system is invented to solve the contradiction between the control of water displacement and water pressure. The above-mentioned achievements have been successfully applied in the first three large cross-sectional subsea tunnels in China, and have played a key role in the construction safety. The proposed technological system can improve the overall construction level of subsea tunnel, which can provide reference for the design and construction of subsea tunnels, especially for those crossing through weakness zones.

This book was released on 2014-02-07 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most pressing problems facing the construction industry globally is the deterioration of major concrete infrastructure in marine and other chloride-containing environments. While recent advancements in concrete technology have made it easier to control the negative impact of deteriorating processes such as alkali-aggregate reaction, freezing and thawing and chemical attack, chloride-induced corrosion of embedded steel continues to pose the biggest threat to structure durability and performance. The second edition of Durability Design of Concrete Structures in Severe Environments focuses on enhancing the durability and service life of concrete structures. The text describes field experience and deteriorating processes of concrete structures in severe environments, and includes current data based on extensive field investigations. It presents a durability design based on calculation of corrosion probability, and outlines additional protective strategies and measures. The text also describes procedures for performance-based concrete quality control and quality assurance with documentation of achieved construction quality and compliance with specified durability. The text further covers calculation of life cycle costs and life cycle assessment, and includes some new recommended job specifications. What’s New in the Second Edition: This second edition delivers more results and experience from practical applications of the probability-based durability design and the performance-based concrete quality control. It includes recent commercial projects both for Oslo Harbor KF and Nye Tjuvholmen KS in Oslo, and contains some preliminary results from the more comprehensive research program "Underwater Infrastructure and Underwater City of the Future" at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The book serves as an essential guide both for the owners and the consulting and construction engineers involved in new and major concrete infrastructure design and construction.

Book excerpt: From New York Times best-selling author Judith Dupréomes a revised and updated edition of Bridges, her magnificent chronological tour of the world's most significant and eye-popping spans. Covering thousands of years of architectural history, each bridge is gorgeously photographed "elevating the landmarks from mode of transportation to works of art" (Bustle). Technological advances, structural daring, and artistic vision have propelled the evolution of bridge design around the world. This visual history of the world's landmark bridges has been thoroughly revised andupdated since its initial publication twenty-five years ago, and now showcases well-known classics as well as modern innovators. Bridges featured include: The Brooklyn Bridge (New York) Dany and-Kunshan Grand Bridge (China) Gateshead Millennium Bridge (England) The Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco) Zakim Bridge (Boston) Including all-new photographs and the latest cutting edgework from today's international superstars of architecture and engineering, Bridges covers two-thousand years of technological and aesthetic triumphs, making it the most thorough, authoritative, and gorgeous book on the subject-as dramatic in presentation as the structures it celebrates. Breathtaking photographs capture the bridges' details as well as their monumental scale; architectural drawings and plans invite you behind the scenes as new bridges take shape; and lively commentary on each structure explores its importance and places it in historical context. Throughout, informative profiles, features, and statistics make Bridges an invaluable reference as well as a visual feast.
