Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sets forth the analytical tools needed to solve key problems in organic chemistry With its acclaimed decision-based approach, Electron Flow in Organic Chemistry enables readers to develop the essential critical thinking skills needed to analyze and solve problems in organic chemistry, from the simple to complex. The author breaks down common mechanistic organic processes into their basic units to explain the core electron flow pathways that underlie these processes. Moreover, the text stresses the use of analytical tools such as flow charts, correlation matrices, and energy surfaces to enable readers new to organic chemistry to grasp the fundamentals at a much deeper level. This Second Edition of Electron Flow in Organic Chemistry has been thoroughly revised, reorganized, and streamlined in response to feedback from both students and instructors. Readers will find more flowcharts, correlation matrices, and algorithms that illustrate key decision-making processes step by step. There are new examples from the field of biochemistry, making the text more relevant to a broader range of readers in chemistry, biology, and medicine. This edition also offers three new chapters: Proton transfer and the principles of stability Important reaction archetypes Qualitative molecular orbital theory and pericyclic reactions The text's appendix features a variety of helpful tools, including a general bibliography, quick-reference charts and tables, pathway summaries, and a major decisions guide. With its emphasis on logical processes rather than memorization to solve mechanistic problems, this text gives readers a solid foundation to approach and solve any problem in organic chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential new edition of the book that put hypercarbon chemistry on the map A comprehensive and contemporary treatment of the chemistry of hydrocarbons (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and aromatics) towards electrophiles, Hypercarbon Chemistry, Second Edition deals with all major aspects of such chemistry involved in hydrocarbon transformations, and of the structural and reaction chemistry of carboranes, mixed hydrides in which both carbon and boron atoms participate in the polyhedral molecular frameworks. Despite the firmly established tetravalency, carbon can bond simultaneously to five or more other atoms. "Hypercarbon" bonding permeates much organic, inorganic and organometallic chemistry, and the book serves as the compendium for this phenomenon. Copious diagrams illustrate the rich variety of hypercarbon structures now known, and patterns therein. Individual chapters deal with specific categories of compound (e.g. organometallics, carboranes, carbocations) or transformations that proceed through transient hypercarbon species, detailing fundamental chemistry, including reactivity, selectivity, stereochemistry, mechanistic factors and more.

Book excerpt: Students at universities the world over will benefit from the authors' concise treatment, arising out of lectures given for a graduate and advanced undergraduate course at Penn State University (USA) and University of Technology Delft (NL). The textbook begins by addressing, in general terms, the phenomena and peculiarities that occur at the nanoscale. In the following five chapters, readers are introduced in detail to nanoscale physics, chemistry, materials science, and biology, followed by chapters on synthesis and fabrication as well as characterization at the nanoscale. In the next four chapters a variety of exemplary applications taken from a wide range of sectors are also presented and discussed. Concerns for safety, environmental impact, workforce development, economic wellbeing, and societal change issues arising from nanotechnology are woven throughout the book and additionally form the focus of the last two chapters.

Book excerpt: Intended for students of intermediate organic chemistry, this text shows how to write a reasonable mechanism for an organic chemical transformation. The discussion is organized by types of mechanisms and the conditions under which the reaction is executed, rather than by the overall reaction as is the case in most textbooks. Each chapter discusses common mechanistic pathways and suggests practical tips for drawing them. Worked problems are included in the discussion of each mechanism, and "common error alerts" are scattered throughout the text to warn readers about pitfalls and misconceptions that bedevil students. Each chapter is capped by a large problem set.

Book excerpt: This thesis addresses the coordination chemistry and reactivity of copper and gold complexes with a focus on the elucidation of (i) the metal-mediated activation of σ-bonds and (ii) the migratory insertion reaction. Both processes are of considerable importance in organometallic chemistry, but remain elusive for Cu and Au complexes. In this work, the author contributes significant advances: The first σ-SiH complexes of copper are experimentally and computationally characterized, yielding valuable insights into σ-bond activation processes for copper. Evidence for a highly unusual migratory syn insertion of unsaturated organic molecules into the gold-silicon bond of silylgold (I) complexes is provided and the corresponding mechanism identified. The intermolecular oxidative addition of σ-SiSi, σ-CC and σ-CX (X=halogen) bonds with molecular gold (I) complexes is studied in detail, effectively demonstrating that this reaction, usually considered to be impossible for gold, is actually highly favored, provided an adequate ligand is employed. The use of small-bite angle bis (phosphine) gold (I) complexes allows for the first time the oxidative addition of σ-CC and σ-CX bonds for gold (I). These results shed light on an unexpected reactivity pattern of gold complexes and may point the way to 2-electron redox transformations mediated by this metal, opening up new perspectives in gold catalysis.

Part 1 includes processes generally considered as simple polar reactions, reactive electrophiles and nucleophiles adding to alkenes and alkynes. A major topic is Michael-type addition to electron deficient &pgr;-bonds, featured in the first six chapters. In part 2 are collected the four general processes leading to nucleophilic aromatic substitution, including radical chain processes and transition metal activation through to &pgr;-complexation. Metal-activated addition (generally by nucleophiles) to alkenes and polyenes is presented in part 3, including allylic alkylation catalyzed by palladium. The coverage of nonpolar additions in part 4 includes radical additions, organometal addition (Heck reaction), carbene addition, and 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions.

Book excerpt: In May of 1978, several hundred of the friends, colleagues and former students of Professor Herbert C. Brown gathered on the campus of Purdue University to note his formal retirement, to honor him for his past contributions to chemistry and to wish him continued success in research. It was a time of reunion and recollection, a time for looking back and giving recognition to a lifetime of accomplishment. There was the ceremony of a banquet, presided over with inimitable wit by Professor Derek Davenport, and the dedication of the Herbert C. Brown Archives, with addresses by Dr. Alfred Bader, of Aldrich Chemicals, and Dr. Alan Schriesheim, of Exxon. There was the publi cation of a book of the personal reminiscences of students and post doctoral colleagues - "Remembering HCB." But it was also a time for looking at the present and into the future with a set of scien tific lectures, mainly by former students or associates, who des cribed their current or projected research activities. That is what this book is about. The papers, some of which are expanded versions of the lectures, fall into two broad groups - some deal with the interplay of struc ture and mechanism, the others deal with the use of organometallics in synthesis. It is, perhaps, no accident that these are the two main areas of H. C. Brown's research interest.
